The truth of the matter is that dmcougar was cut from the high school football team and Riley Nelson was given his spot. Either that or he ran over his dog.

There is literally no sane reason for a rational person to have so much hatred for a BYU player.

Anyone who knows anything at all about Nelson knows that although the guy is extremely confident in his looks, he's also a guy who takes every opportunity to share the gospel and be a friend and a support to those around him. Yeah, I think he's a little silly with his shirt pulled up but to act like a Douche about it is pretty low.

How is that hatred? It might be the truth. Certainly I have stated multiple facts. And certainly no more speculative than most were about Jake last year.

You know that when BlueisBetter is calling you out for your hatred of all things Nelson that you've crossed the line. I've never hear blueisbetter say one good thing about RN. (Just messin with you blueisbetter ;) )

You've gotta be a USU fan who is still in a jealous fit that Riley left Logan for BYU. A real BYU fan doesn't do this to one of our players.

Thanks for the lesson in decency.

So you've just got a weird obsession with bringing down one BYU player. Weird stuff bro.

I think the nelson bashing needs to stop. I think he is a team guy that goes full board in all that he does. He is extremely polarizing but he doesn't deserve the hate he gets. That hate should be directed at coaches if any hate is deserving regarding what happened last year. All he did was his best given what the coaches gave him.

Really Hawk? Since you have made this personal, let me just say that you make a poor psychologist/analyist and not much better speaking the "truth."

Oh yeah, because he's SO terrible that he was neck n' neck with St. Heaps last year, right? Or is it that he's clearly still the #2 guy at BYU, that's pretty bad, right? C'mon man, stop hating the kid because he's not your cookie-cutter version of a BYU qb.

Here's some reading for you so you can educate yourself about Riley's character:

http://www.sltrib.com/sltrib/sports/52389156-77/nelson-byu-heaps-riley.html.csp?page=2" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

"Nelson was among 22 players from all levels of college football selected to the American Football Coaches Association’s Good Works Team for his leadership and service. They spent a full day working in the flood-ruined Lower Ninth Ward of New Orleans"

Not to mention the kid is helping the team in any way possible, playing special teams (generally considered scrub duty) and getting our D ready for the ever-dreaded running qb.

I still don't understand why people are so peeved about Nelson not telling coaches about his injury last season. If the tables were turned and it were Heaps, Detmer, Young, etc. trying to tough it out through an injury, most would be giving them kudos. Instead, a lot of BYU fans seem to think that it was selfish in Nelson's instance just because it was Heaps he was staving off for the #1 position.

Its the "extreme polarizing" that I wish would stop. It wasnt good last year and certainly isnt helpful this year. I'm glad he's competing hard, in theory it makes the others better at some level. But not once have I seen him verbally offer support and get behind Heaps. At the least it functions as denial. At worst, it still festers as collusive energy for a team--and his 1st string QB--that could do great things this year. So here is me cheering on Riley to do whatever it takes to get over himself and acknowledge publicly that he supports Heaps and this whole team. Doman said "no negativity." Doman did not say, "the QB's are all supportive of Jake and want the best for him and the team." If something like this has been said, please someone draw my attention to it.

The national attention and service to others is of course very laudable.

OK, I'm done ticking off some or all of you folks about Riley.

I've never heard Alisa get behind our three-headed monster, I've never heard Famika Anae get behind any of our O-line, I've never heard Stout get behind Kaveinga, Pendleton, or KVN, it doesn't mean that I'm going to assume that they aren't supportive of the team and their teammates. The problem you have with Riley is purely a creation of your own imagination, it's all in your head.

I wouldn't go that far. Simply this: at times we take a position based on very little. Then, when we are forced to defend that position, we don't have the ammo to back it up because it wasn't something that we really cared that much about. There are two options when we come to this crossroad: change our minds and admit we were wrong, or try to create an argument to justify our position. It happens to everyone sometimes, but I would recommend doing the former as opposed to the latter when one finds himself at the crossroad.

Would you deny the fact that if Riley showed verbal support for Jake in a public manner that that would be good for the chemistry of this team? Or that somehow doing so would be negative for Riley?

Brendon Gaskins displayed considerable team-first attitude, maturity, and character when he conceded his earned #2 spot, a spot coaches did not ask him to concede. Is it too much to ask or so unreasonable for Riley to display something publicly that he supports Jake and will keep competing hard to be ready and push Jake? Riley doesnt have to concede his #2 spot or stop competing. Im glad he wont.

That was Brendon Gaskins then and we're talking Riley Nelson now. Two completely different situations.

Face it, he's enough of a gamer that he's still 2nd string qb and will be involved in the offense in some capacity, even if he's bumped to 3rd string. If the offense does well when he's in, you'll see even more opportunities for your arch rival than what you'll want. I get the feeling you'll still probably be cheering for his downfall which is just dumb if you're really a BYU fan.

Bottom line is we don't know what Riley Nelson will be doing with the offense, but he won't ride the pine all year, that much has been revealed by "people in the know".

And I can't believe I'm still talking about this. Time to bid adieu to this thread.

So, because Riley didn't think that Jake was necessarily better last year, he now has poor character? The coaches couldn't decide either, is that a character flaw in them as well? Or could it just be that Riley is competitive and wasn't going to give something up that not even the coaches were sure about? This year, Jake is already taking the #1 qb snaps, Riley has nothing to concede, and it's obvious that Jake is the #1 guy this year, so why does Riley have to say anything, the coaches already have. No other second stringer on the team has told the press that they support the guy in front of them, no player in contention for a starting spot has conceded the spot because they other guy is "clearly better." You're picking on Riley for no good reason, the fact that he hasn't told the press that he's behind Jake makes him just like everyone else on the team.

"To those guys’ credit, they’ve added great support, they’ve not been negative — but they’ve [competed] like crazy," said Brandon Doman, BYU’s new offensive coordinator. "They’ve made it very clear they don’t want to stand on the sidelines."

From: http://www.sltrib.com/sltrib/sports/52389156-77/nelson-byu-heaps-riley.html.csp" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

So if this is a criticism of Nelson it's only fair that it's just as equally critical of Lark (and Munns to for that matter). Frankly I don't see how being "a great support" can be construed as a negative team player.

Besides, how many interviews has Riley Nelson had since the start of the year? Is he supposed to call a press conference to announce his intentions to remain the backup QB?

Besides, its not like any one is considering going back to the 2 QB system or that Nelson should start over Heaps, so whats the big deal?

The whole Riley things is incredible to me. I can only imagine how he feels when people bash on him. He is obviously a sharp kid, maybe a little wierd?, but sharp. I just don't think he deserves the hate. he is the victim of going up against Jake and his celebrity.

I hate to see our own attack our own. All he has done is his best and I am not aware of any credible sources that say he has ever done anything to poison the team against heaps or anything like that. the kid has tons of heart and refuses to go away despite his limitations.

I just get sick hearing how much people hate him. He doesn't deserve it. He is a good lds guy doing his best in school, football, church and life and those of us who personally attack him should be ashamed. It is just embarrassing.
