The Role of Riley Nelson in Y Offense

I hope that Riley succeeds in whatever role or situation in which he finds himself.

Schmoe and the rest of you, sorry I have been so cantankerous and divisive about this.



Riley clearly has alot of laudable traits. IMO, I think he could show additional leadership stating something in the positive about the qb situation. Maybe by the end of fall camp. maybe never. I believe his teammates feel for his situation and would feel relief and rally around Riley and Jake if he were to make a statement.

At any rate, notwithstanding damage done, my apologies.

dmcougar,this is pretty ridiculous. What has Riley done that would necessitate him making extra-curricular positive comments about the qb "situation". Has he been negative about it? Has he shown a lack of support for Jake? Has he done ANYTHING that would indicate he isn't okay with how things turned out? Or are you really just basing your "divisive" opinions on the fact that he has a hot body and great hair? Because really, having read this thread so far, that is all you people seem to have against the kid.

I really like the kid. I wish the coaches would have stuck w him and RS'd Jake, OR gone with Jake full on last year. Riley would have given us at least as many wins as we had in the first place. But we got rid of a lot of dead weight last year with all the loses (and confrontations coming to a head), and that has made us much better.



Putting myself in Riley's place, as Sno mentioned, I don't think I would have disclosed an injury unless it affected my gameday performance to where I was hurting the team. In fact, I have done something similar many times in game situations (maybe not quite to the extent he did, but who knows).



I really don't see the need to bag on a kid wearing our jersey. Telling it like you see it is fine (weaker arm, etc etc), but getting on a guy for his looks... that's just plain crazy, and in my opinion completely uncalled for.



I suppose you need to get on Vic for his gameday mohawks, and link him to local robberies and chain gang related incidents. I think Unga was sporting a mini-fro for a while, so let's assume that he only listens to rap and r&b classics, and probably deals and does drugs. Who else? Bronco rides a Harley, so he probably drinks beer and beats his wife...

On a related side note, for every 2 people supporting Heaps last year there was one calling him "golden boy", "golden child", "Golden Arm", "Golden Watch", "Golden Oldies" (okay maybe not the last 2) etc etc. That was bagging on HIM (just like the funny, but inappropriate "noodle armed choir boy" stuff to Nelson). Bagging on Heaps because he missed a pass, and "I thought he was perfect" blah blah blah...



So don't forget that it went both ways, and BOTH SIDES were wrong to do so.



What a joke this whole Riley vs. Jake thing has turned out to be. From the coaches, on down to the fans...

Channel 4 here in Utah had a great story on Sunday night about the Heaps/Nelson thing. I won't call it a rivalvy because according to all concerned in this very good story, it is not.

Coach Mendenhall called Riley a "leader on this team" and said that he has even been put on some of the special teams so that the team can benefit from some of that leadership. Several times in the intervies, Riley acknowledged that Jake was the acknowledged starting QB and referred to him as "the guy". Jake had a lot of nice things to say about Riley. And following the story, the ABC 4 sportsguys called Riley the "classiest" backup QB in college FB.

NIce piece by channel 4. Good for Riley. I think it shows great leadership (and not bc I feel somewhat vindicated). This type of camaraderie is pretty important at such a high level, visible position as qb and often the "final ingredient" if you will, of getting a team to really synergize and maximize their potential. With politics and pettiness aside its all about position and scheme mastery, timing and repetition, etc.

I think we've accomplished what we set out to with this thread, everyone got their say in and things have worked out well in the end. Time to close it down.
