Houston DC Gibbs > Anae

I would rather be completely wrong and be reminded about it for eternity if Houston doesn't lose another game all year... because it's good for BYU and that would make me very happy that we beat a 12-1 Houston team. What's good for BYU and BYU recruiting is infinitely more important to me than being right.

However, I didn't see a lot of talent on that team and I truly believe that had Taysom not thrown that pick 6, we might have deflated them and kept our foot on their throats all game, instead we breathed life in them and they maintained it the entire game..... It certainly didn't help that Craig Bills didn't play, nor did it help that JW got hurt. I don't care if Houston was 5-0 or 1-4; I just don't see a great team. I'm happy BYU won, but I think the rest of the season will expose Houston as a pretty average team. Not great, not terrible...

Here's the difference between Houston and Texas

Houston- great coaching, undersized talent

Texas - amazing talent, terrible coaching

at the end of the year we will find that neither are top 25 teams... the difference is we smoked Texas and eked past Houston...

I am very happy BYU won, but I wonder what the tone of this forum would be if 1. We had built a 20-30 point lead and then let Houston almost win (or rather I think the way in which we won is exciting enough to forget we could have easily lost) 2. Or had BYU lost by 1-2 points

In spite of Taysoms numbers, we still could have lost that game... I think the tone here would have been very very different... and it would have only taken 1 dropped pass, 1 fumble, etc. The W is the most important thing, but this is a sports forum where we talk about the past, present, and future. I think what we'll find in the future is that BYU did just enough to beat an average team, but that it was still a monumental game for our players confidence.

What I'm baffled about is that somehow people are seeing this as criticism...like somehow if you believe that Houston is middle of the road, that you're somehow not as much of a BYU fan as the guy that thinks that this game deserves to go down in history with the Miami, Oklahoma, Cotton Bowl, Miracle Bowl types of games... to me it's more like the shootouts we had against Hawaii back in the day.

My point before the game was that Houston was a very confident team (most undefeated teams are) and they scared me to death. Strength of schedule is a non factor to me because teams who win all their games are a very tough out simply because they play with confidence.

My point after the game is the same, nothing of what I saw on Saturday changed my opinion that Houston was a 5-0 team who played like they were not going to get beat by a team with 2 losses. The fact that BYU pulled out a close one was more exciting to me because in the last couple of years BYU would have found a way to lose that game but actually won it instead. It speaks well for this team and this group of guys that they would not let up and they snatched this one from certain defeat. Houston may turn out to be an average team but that is beside the point because on Saturday they played like their record and BYU won anyway.

Or did we play down to their level? Guess we'll see as the season plays out.

No, that is exactly the point. We almost lost to a team that would more than likely lose to anyone on our schedule not named Idaho or Idaho State. Yes, even Middle Tennessee State.

We didn't, so that is hooray joy joy and all of that, but we came very close (because of poor coaching due to non-adjustments) to giving away a game that we have no business giving away. 7 for 21 on third downs. 8 sacks. Are you all happy with those numbers, against the caliber of talent we were playing? Watch the Houston game again and tell me I am wrong.

According to Sagarin, Houston is better than 5 teams on our schedule this year.

How are sacks, turnovers and missed special teams assignments poor coaching? These were mistakes/poor plays by our players. I'm not a huge anae fan, but his play calling has been a lot better and less predictable than early in the year. I still think he's a bit predictable, but getting less so.

I am astounded that our defense gave up over 400 yards passing to a couple of freshmen QBs, more points than Mendenhall expects vs any team even after subtracting out 16 points given up by offense and special teams, special teams allowing a 95 yard KOREA, a huge punt return, allowing Houston punts to keep rolling inside the 10, and all Blue is Bitter wants to talk about is Anae.

Then when talking about Anae - he has not once mentioned the 97 yard scoring drive and the two late passes to Ridley when everyone was expecting throws to Hoff or scrambles by Taters.

Neither has he once acknowledged that Anae did what he did without Williams who got nearly 100 yards in the 1st half before watching the 2nd half from the sidelines.

The last time we had a game like this was Tulsa 2007, and we lost. Tulsa that year ended up being 10-4 and winning their bowl game. That's a very good team, not great, but not average either. I would predict something similar for Houston this year.

I watched the replay last night and you are wrong. See BoiseBYU's observations in his thread and my comment. There was no outcoaching going on, there was horrible Oline play that caused the issues in the 3rd quarter. If it weren't for Taysom being the best player on the field, BYU loses that game. Houston is better than you are crediting them.

I did not watch last night. Anniversary. But, I have Q2, Q3, and most of Q4 on DVR.

Will watch it. Really fun game to watch.

Hopefully Bitter does not think Anae was outcoached in the late 4th quarter when BYU had a 97 yard drive and two huge passes to Ridley. Due to the length of the game,:DVR may not have all of that.

Does not have all of that 24 point smack down that should have been 31 in Q1 either. But Bitter might also admit that Anae was not outcoached in Q1.

Houston is not incredible. Probably will lose 3 or 4 more. Probably will get blown out by Louisvillevwho is better than BYU

It was a sloppy game. Penalties. Execution. OL. Officiating. But moreso, poor tackling on D and ST, and poor punting at times, and poor punt fielding resulting in horrible field position And JW Iinjury.

And Anae is far from perfect. But he was not outcoached by Houston DC. He took Houston DC to the woodshed.

Some fans just aren't content with anything.

Byu wins = Houston was terrible

Byu scores 47 on gaudy #'s = Anae called a bad game

Players miss tackles = Defensive coaches are clueless

On the flip side:

If Houston would have won = Houston is a decent team

If the players would have made made the tackles = Defensive coaches are gods

Anae calls a good game OR bad game = fire anae, he sucks

Byu played fabulous on offensive. Almost unstoppable. Without turnovers or penalties I'm pretty sure we wouldn't have punted more than a few times.

Houston has some really good skill players mixed in with average players. I liked their coaching and their skill guys, lets not put them down since we didn't win by as many points as WE thought. Give them credit. Top 40 team in my book.

The title of this thread is to me laughable, indefensible, and biased. And the arguments against are so clear that failure to concede shows immaturity.

The same house of cards arguements could be used to say Houston OC Doug Meacham > Mendenhall.

Maybe some believe that as well.

False. The reverse of your argument is true.

If Robert Anae > Houston DC Gibbs because of statistics, than Houston OC > Bronco because of statistics.

But when you factor in talent level

- on offense, we have a ton compared to their defense.

- our defensive secondary is literally down to walk ons with Bills out.

Then that shows you that less was done with more iwth our offense AND more was done with less in our defensive secondary (not the other way around, as you implied.)

Thanks for playing, though. :D

Houston is average regardless of whether or not BYU won. How would you all be reacting if we had lost? You would all be burning the house down. <<Shrugs>> Some people don't want to see what is staring them in the face, and that is okay. We have a lot to improve on, and coaching is definitely one of those things.

Agreed that there is a lot to improve on, not sure how productive it is to say someone did or didn't "outcoach" (whatever that means) his counterpart though

Maybe I should rename the thread Gibbs made effective adjustments, and Anae didn't counter adjust: (?)

Not being snarky, maybe I should. That is what I was trying to imply with the thread, but it got out of hand with a lot of crossfire arguments going on.

The DC made adjustments after the first quarter that slowed us down, and I don't think that we countered like we should have. Anae has a history of not taking what the defense gives him, and I think that he continued that to an extent. Against a better team that means a loss, and we barely eked out a W against a team that wouldn't go bowling on our schedule. We can't afford to give away wins as an independent. Especially when we watch our "toughest schedule ever" fall apart as the losses pile up.

Sagarin has Houston at #52. So slightly better than average. Definitely improved from last year. Projected to finish 3rd out of 10 in the new Big East. You want to talk bad, talk about the UConn team we're playing next year.

But yes, our coaching was poor at times and needs to improve against better teams (Boise, Wisconsin, Notre Dame) or all three will be losses and folks will be dropping "I told ya so"s all over the place.

If our offense delivers 700 yards and 47 points with 3 turnovers and we lose any game remaining - the problem will not be the offense.

So if we are saying that Anae didn't make the adjustments, then who/what do you credit for the last drive? Considering that the last drive looked nothing like the 3rd quarter play calls, I'm curious to see if you want to put it all on the players and not on the play calls.

Once again the general rule of thumb for fans:

wins=players

loses=coaches
