For those of you arguing that Houston wasn't good because their 5-0 record is weak, you can't make that argument without also downgrading BYU's national championship. 5-0 is a good team, and beating them means something. Not being a well-tested team is not the same as being a bad team. Why is half the forum suddenly pulling an Airwolf?

Because BYUs 84 team beat nationally ranked teams, had a dozen future NFLers on the team, and did it for more than 5 games... the comparison is silly and this is the 3rd person that has brought it up. It's silly, Houston's schedule is garbage...

I doubt they manage better than .500 after this game. Glad we won, but calling a spade a spade doesn't mean we're devolving into airwolf...

I didn't for one second call for ammon olsen, or type a "peace out, I'm done" post after Utah. I just don't think Houston is very good and I'm happy that our team did just barely enough to win today... but I don't think our performance was great and I don't think our competition was great...

(I also don't think Arizona is great... and they're abusing Utah right now)

You're not calling a spade a spade, you're calling something a spade with insufficient data as to whether it's a spade. Five wins where they didn't play well above such weak competition would never have suggested what they did today to us, so those performances should be taken with as much a grain of salt as you're suggesting we should take with this win (which most of us understand doesn't look amazing on our resume anyway). You're deliberately taking the pessimistic view, which is where the Airwolf comparison comes from. Nobody is saying they are world-beaters. Nobody is beating their chest over the win. Yes, people thought Taysom did some great things, and he deserves the credit because very few quarterbacks have done what he did today even against very weak competition. We didn't look awesome this game, and Houston looked a lot better than I and many others expected them to. I don't understand the insistence that people are being blind or stupid by suggesting that Houston looked like a pretty good team today.

Today our offense scored 47 points. Houston's offense scored 28. We out passed them by 50 or so yards and out rushed them by 200. How is Gibbs>Anae?

You realize that Gibbs is their defensive coordinator, right?

Gibbs is better than Anae because he went head to head against him, and after the first quarter made adjustments that stymied our offense for almost the entire game and almost caused a very inferior team to win.

Let's just put it this way... The #2 on our depth chart would start for Houston, that is how inferior to us in talent they are. And yes, I am including PoVey and Daniel. Our worst starters on defense are still way better than theirs.

I did and thought Anae and the offense did and deserved better than that, but I hear what you're saying.

Don't know what game you were watching today but their WRs abused our DBs most of the game. Check the stats I posted on the other posting. They have two legit NFL WRs and the QB OKorn will be a great player before he is through. This game was a dog-fight plain and simple. I never felt like our D could stymie UH the entire game and held my breath on most of their deep throws and swing passes to the sidelines. Additionally, their DL/LBs blew through our OL for 8 sacks. Not even Utah did that to TH nor did they intercept him 3 times. A 47-46 score should not downplay UH skill level. Their All-American Punter/FG kicker missed two FGs today that are normally money for him (he finished 1-3) and their WR dropped a sure 2 point conversion when he was wide open in the end zone. In other words, they could have won this game if they made some critical plays. My hat is off to TH for willing this team to win and completing some critical passes and runs while under extreme pressure.

take a couple breaths and settle down. This was a good win, sure. It wasn't against a good team. This team is playing a terrible schedule, and they will still just barely make a bowl game. They could realistically end the season at 7-5 after this 5-1 start. If BYU had a schedule like theirs we would almost certainly run the table, with Louisville being a guaranteed loss for us (Bridgewater is legit) and maybe Cinci.

I'll take the win as ugly as it comes, but we almost got this game stolen away from us because Anae doesn't know how to adjust against an aggressive defense.

I'm sorry to be so frank, but this entire thread is insane. Their DC is better than our OC because he figured out how to not give up 24 points in a quarter mid game??? Doesn't that seem a little late to be figuring out a minor detail like that? Does anyone think Gibbs is ecstatic that his defense "only" gave up 23 points and 400 yards over the final three quarters?

Our team played barely won and has lots of room for improvement I am good with that as long as they can continue to improve, oh and Taysom Hill is becoming so fun to watch its a good time to be a fan.

Fact: BYU had 91 yards rushing and 184 yards passing in the first quarter for a total of 273.

Fact: BYU had 408 yards in the remaining three quarters.

Fact: 408 yards is more than Stanford averages per game.

Fact: BYU had 181 yards in the 2nd quarter and 166 in the 4th.

My Opinion: the ONLY portion of the game in which an argument could be made that the offense was stymied was during the 3rd quarter when they had only 60.

Blue hates Anae. Don't expect objectivity.

Houston is a dangerous team. Not a great team. It was a road game a long way from home. And we played poorly at times, but won.

UH DC did not out coach Anae. Asinine. BYU scored 47 points. Iirc, the offense scored every one of them against the UH DC - other than extra point kicks and field goal kicks made as a result of the offense getting us into position to kick them.

But when Blue digs himself into a hole like he did at the time he started this thread probably assuming a loss was coming - he ain't going to eat crow just because Anae went on to eat that DC for lunch.

Yep, anyone who thinks a team that scored 47 and racked up nearly 700 yards of offense - while averaging 5.9 yards per play (so don't give me that "BYU only got a ton of yards because of how many plays they ran" garbage either) was out-coached by the opposing team's defensive coordinator is way off base in that analysis.

Right on, spiff.

Blue is Better pre-game predictions for BYU offense (from prediction game):

40 points

250 passing yards

250 rushing yards

They exceeded all of his expectations. What's the problem?

My problem is that after a first quarter adjustment Houston was able to give us a game with personnel that doesn't even belong on the field with BYU. If Houston played our schedule, they wouldn't win 5 games all season. Anyone that thinks that Houston would have beaten Utah or Texas is crazy.

I will say it again, there is not a starter or a secondary player on our two deep on defense that wouldn't start for them. Having not seen Houston play, I didn't know how bad they were until I saw them in person. Max Hall, Pitta and Collie would have hung 70 on these guys and gotten taken out early in the 3rd quarter. When our lackluster receivers that can't get open against anyone are open all over the field, you know you are playing a bad defense.

You think it is just coincidence that Skyler Ridley and Ross Apo disappear for the entire season, and magically show up for this game? These guys aren't good, and other than getting a "W" by the skin of our teeth, there isn't much to celebrate. Getting the W is good enough for me, but it doesn't change the fact that our offense almost lost to a bad, bad defense.

I'm happy about the win, but our coaching has got to improve, and the offensive line play is garbage. And the playcalling needs to adjust to how our team is playing, and last night it didn't. You didn't see one screen, one quick hitting slant, the entire second half. All our plays were deep rollouts. We didn't take what the defense gave us, we ended up winning because our defense is leaps and bounds better than theirs, and we barely eeked out a win. It shouldn't have been that close. We almost gave away a big one, and with the way our team is, and the harder than normal schedule we can't afford to give anything away to bad coaching or not adjusting the game plan to what is given to us.

Blue has good points. This was a frenetic, ugly, comeback, eek out win. If BYU loses, the majority of posters are perseveration about the very same problems Blue has mentioned. But bc BYU won, everybody rested easy last night and forgot about the ugly.

There are folks spouting "best ever qb", "better D than 2012", etc, etc. Mania. It's what fans do. I don't think UH is as bad as Blue is stating. They had a few studs on D and O. But our Oline is very mediocre, if not inconsistent. is that scheme? GFGH and they are just tired and getting blown up? Is it talent? Both? Then on D, I not know if it was just Bills absence,

People are simply taking exception with the assinine statement that a defensive coach that gave up 47 or so points - all earned by the offense - no pick 6, no safety, no KOR to the house - all earned - out coached the OC that racked all of that up on him.

Simply that.

I doubt many will take Craig O up on his lunch bet. I won't. Houston most likely will lose 3 more games. So what. The Houston DC did not outcoach Anae. Asinine.

If anybody got outcoached, that would be our Kick-off team and our run defense team. Our pass defense got outplayed - over-matched.

I will not be shocked to see Louisville do the same thing to that Houston defense. Not many other of their opponents will.

I agree with this pretty much completely.(Except that Houston may surprise us against their remaining schedule. I think the Jury is still out on them.)

**Sigh** dude, no one on this board has said even one time that this years defense is better than last years. If you will go back and read the entire thread that you got shut down you will notice this fact. The first clue is the title of the thread is worded as a question. In my post about the article that so offended you, I said that none of his stats were conclusive but just interesting. It is unbelievable that someone can find an article that is interesting, post it in order to try to get a discussion going and then have someone get so offended by it (without even reading the article until being called out for not reading it) that it gets what could have been an interesting thread shut down.

Hawk, don't worry about shutting this one down, I am not going to respond to any nonsense this guy posts.

Houston didn't give us a game because of lack of offensive production. They gave us a game because of a kickoff return that featured awful BYU tackling, a completely missed clear and obvious offensive pass interference on Houston and a Pick 6 by a Houston defender Hill should have seen.

I'm fairly certain the offensive game plan did NOT include throwing to Houston.

BYU had 396 yards in quarters 2, 3 & 4. Those 396 yards were more than BYU had in the opener versus Virginia. It also is more than BYU had in six games last year, six games in 2011, seven games in 2010, six games in 2009, and three games in 2008.

I was more disappointed in the interception hill threw in the back of the end zone. He tried to force a ball to a guy who was covered when Hine was WIDE open on the sideline and could have walked into the end zone, in fact I started calling TD because I saw Hine flare out and that no one was on him on TV and thought that Hill was going to throw to him. Then Hill threw to Matthews and the pick, I couldn't believe he even went there since it looked to me like he was following Hine with his eyes. (of course he must not have or this would be the bonehead decision of the year). I think that Hill threw the pick 6 without seeing the linebacker headed to the flat and by that time it was simply too late. Anyway, I am also having a hard time reading all of the disparaging of Houston, it is almost like BYU fans have a preconceived notion on who is good and who isn't before the game is played and if we don't perform up to expectations, even in a win we have to criticize everything BYU. Houston was 5-0, they played like they deserved to be 5-0 and BYU beat them in their house. It was a good win.
