Drew Phillips reports he's gone.

Having become a BYU Indepent Study expert over the last two years, let me add this. BYU just changed a long standing policy that allows a student to retake a previously completed or even a previously failed class and have the new grade replace the old grade completely in the GPA calculation which in the past could quickly fix GPA, academic warning, or academic probation issues. That policy ended today. I know because my son just finished retaking one and came right down to the wire even though BYU Independent Study professor went to great strides to grade assignments and tests immediately. I flew my son back to Provo when I saw he might miss the deadline, because the following delays due to policy can be killers when doing this from home on a tight deadline.



Request Exam, pay a fee for Fed Ex or wait for regular mail for it to go to the proctor, schedule appt to take it, pay a fee to Fed Ex it back or wait for mail, wait for it to be graded, order next one. Some are totally on-line except final exams, but many mid-terms are not on-line.



Final cannot ve ordered until everything else is submitted and graded in most cases. Add in time and fees to resubmit assignnents or retake exams where allowed, and you can easily miss a deadline. That would be the advantage of being in Provo - no mail delays / fed ex fees. Order it and if you ask, often they can print the exam on the spot and let you take it on the spot.



And I have seen some teachers take a week or more to grade exams or assignments and being in Provo can't even help that.



But bottom line is that if he failed a class in Winter and retook it and got it recorded by today and got an A - the A would completely replace the F in the GPA calc and that would make a huge difference, especially if he had two classes. 2 classes at 3 credits each could thus add 3*4.0*2 = 24 grade points to the numerator of your GPA calculation without changing the denominator.



So say you had taken 30 units, failed 6 units, and had a D Avg of 36 grade points / 30 Units = 1.2.



Add the 24 gradepoints from getting A on retaking both classes and suddenly you would get 60 grade points / 30 units = 2.0.



Voilla - problem solved. Academic probation solved.



Now imagine the same scenario, including getting an A on both retakes, but missing the deadline. You would get 60 grade points, but be dividing by 36 units because the six failed units would still be counted and = 1.6666666. Much better than 1.2 but not enough improvement to get off academic probation.



All hypothetical, but whether taking Independent Study in Privo or at home or attending Spring or Summer sessions, the long-standing policy allowing a retake grade to completely replace a previous grade changed today. Trust me I know. My son made it in the nick of time. He would nit have come close if I had not flown him back here to shorten the logistics.

Chambers was very reactionary, just in case you all forgot lockergate, etc etc.

As more info comes out, it looks like it is pretty fair to compare Phillips to Chambers, as Phillips has had a least a full summer to get his ducks in a row, and didn't. Now it almost seems like he's acting like a spoiled kid.



But of course at the time BlueIsBetter made this post, we didn't know that Drew had had all summer and multiple chances.

Yeah, as more info comes out it seems like someone misunderstood something somewhere. I would imagine that Bronco was very clear about the circumstances

surrounding Phillips. I hope he stays and fights it out, we can't afford to lose speed like him. It's just sad he couldn't have applied himself. I wonder if he realizes that he was a shoe in for special teams play at the very least.

Tuition at BYU is $2,210 for LDS members and $4,420 for non-LDS members for a full-time student.



A few comparisons:

Texas: $4,938 for resident; $11, 845 for non-resident

According to interview with Bronco, Drew will not be coming back as opposed to O'Neal Chambers who will return. Academically the school might have been challenging for him and not what he was used to. Sounds like the SEC will be a good home for him given their required standards for their players.

Per more inside info I have been given, the family claims it never received the July letter, as Bronco reported to Wrubell. They feel it unfair to state that without knowing the letter was received--which tye claim it wasn't. So the news the schollie was pulled is a bombshell to them because they had no reason to expect it. . Says when Drew left after Spring, he knew he had classwork to do to get back, but he planned on coming back and left all his things in a storage unit in Provo fully intending on being back. He rocked his summer courses, so thought he was in good shape. Family says if they knew the schollie was pulled way back after spring, they would have explored options for Drew over the summer, but as they had no indication they needed to, very unhappy with the timing on being informed a day ago. Was told that have called Bronco for explanation, but have not yet heard from him personally on the whys, so the parents really feel in the dark on this, and are hurting for their son. Have heard the Coach DuPaix has made contact, but they want to hear from Bronco. Perhaps Drew knew things and did not pass them on. Perhaps a letter was sent. But if the family did not receive it, and has not spoken to Bronco personally for an explanation, hard to see why they would not be upset. If this was my kid, and it appeared to go down as the family sees it going down, I know I would be pretty upset. Obviously, two sides, and I am not picking one--just passing on info I am getting directly from an insider.

So what you are saying Lawboy is that BYU is going to have its honor dragged through the mud in the media by a non lds recruit because the stupid us mail lost a letter? I sure hope bronco calls this kids family and gets things straightened out.

Well, BYU has a bunch of students and I am sure that they send a bunch of letters every semester or quarter (whatever system they are on) so the timing of the letter doesn't surprise me. I doubt they send any of them certified since that would be a huge expense. Anyway, the whole thing is stupid.

Does a letter need to be sent? If the scholie was pulled in spring, it's reasonable to think that Drew would have known about it then. It's also reasonable that he would have been embarrassed to tell his family about it. And told them simply that he needed to do was get his grades up.



It would seem that then learning, just now, that the scholarship had really been pulled would come as a real surprise to Drew's family, and that subsequent reports that the schollie had really been pulled months before would, in their mind, seem like CYA by Bronco and BYU.



I side with Bronco and believe he was upfront and honest with Drew. I think Drew tried cover up his mistakes and make up for them at the same time. That would certainly jive with Bronco's "inconsistency" comment about Drew.

Perhaps, but this was a Bronco decision, not BYU admin decision, so the letter would have come from Bronco, not from admin. Bronco makes player decisions. His program. Not HC and eligibility related.



I hope it gets worked out. The OC issue was bad early as well, but after Bronco spoke with Linette, it got sorted, and OC is back with conditions. Hoping for the same with Drew.

I bet if the Philip's really wanted to talk to Bronco, he would most certainly talk to them and not give them the cold shoulder.

Sounds to me like Phillips is trying to pull the wool over peoples eyes and maybe his family is naive enough to believe him. I think we have ample evidence of the way Bronco handles things and he's always up front and honest.

It sounds like we are making a lot of assumptions.

It is possible that Bronco meant Spring Semester as opposed to Spring Camp or the Spring Season. Spring Semester at BYU ended June 24th (or thereabouts). Personally I think Bronco meant Spring Semester and if that's the case then it is perfectly reasonable to have the letter sent in July.

Regardless, hope Bronco and the family speak really soon so a better understand ing from all sides is achieved. Per Bronco's report, Coach DuPaix made contact with the family, and they want to talk to Bronco. I think they deserve as much. Hoping it turns out like OC and Gaines.

Drew Phillips owes his family an explanation. He needs to explain why coaches are saying they told him weeks and/or months ago the scholarship was being pulled and he didn't tell them until now.

BYU coaches said they sent a letter home in June or July after they told DP he'd have to work to get it back.



DP was home all summer long working on classes.

Privacy is the reason. Once again, I have gained deep expertise on this topic the past two years. My sons give me their passwords to access their BYU records and I helped the youngest one register for classes. He finished high school a nearly a year early and took his last 2 high school classes plus 6 College classes through Independent study. When I have called to get a test fed ex to Hawaii, they won't even confirm to me that he is a student, let alone answer a question, unless he is standing there to give them codes and permissions.



The letter most likely was addressed to and opened by Drew. Bronco is probably limited in what he can even tell family members about the letter.

Drew must have kept in on the hush, because if he lost the schollie after spring, then he would have had to of paid for his own classes in the summer semester. If his parents had no clue he was going to lose it then he must have paid for it on his own. So I say, come on drew pay your way for one year and get the schollie back. Good Hell, I wish I only had to pay for one year of college. I don't want to hear people whine about a kid paying for one year of school. He'll still have a helluva lot less school debt than I do.
