Having said that, Nelson definitely looked better in his series than Lark did in his. I was actually pleasantly surprised by Munns. Sure, it was against the 3's and 4's, but better than expected.

Sorry, must have been using Ole Miss standards when applying great. I didn't have the best angle on the throw and was trying to walk up the south stands to the shade under the scoreboard when I turned to see the play already started and throw in the air.

Still, good to see he had an improved scrimmage on saturday.

If Heaps would have thrown the same pass, it would have been great and all the receiver's fault... :roll:

Seconded. Part of him missing the ball was he had to hang up, and kind of do a "jump to the side" catch. I'm pretty sure even if he caught it he would have fallen to secure the ball. Sweet, sweet, double move. CB was picking daisies on that one.

You're right, but if Heaps had thrown the same pass we wouldn't see the same criticism. Riley played well yesterday, not perfect, but the receivers he threw to decided not to catch the ball. I wouldn't say the ball was thrown late, but it did have some wobble and was to the wrong shoulder, if only our div-1 caliber receivers could adjust to an imperfect pass, *sigh*.

Takes two to tango. But I would also say that part of the problem with poor completion percentage last year early was velocity differences which affects timing and maybe, though I dont buy this completely, direction of spin (lefty vs righty). The other major part of the problem attitude and poor team chemistry.

But to the point, if ball speed from delivery is 30% slower from Riley, and it gets hung up, how much can you expect a receiver to wait and/or adjust. THen again, maybe the tables are turned and receivers arent as interested in helping out Riley this year.

I'd actually say Heaps had the worst pass of the day. Into double coverage on the goal line that hit the defender in the chest.

You should read Brandon Loyd's interview in the latest ESPN mag where a pro-bowl 1600+ yard receiver is griping about the difficulty in switching back and forth between a pro-style righty in Orton and a mobile lefty in Tebow. He mentions different departure points, spin direction, and trajectories as factors in making catching balls more difficult. If pro-bowl NFL receivers are having issurs with the back-and-forth, you think our NCAA receiving corps last season might have been at a disadvantage, especially with a WR coach who couldn't know anything about catching a ball?

I can give on the "ball was thrown late" portion. I think you are right about it being thrown on time. I like Riley. You really can't make our receivers happy, huh? Too fast, not fast enough... ;)

Riley did well on Saturday. I was disappointed in Lark. Everybody has bad days. This was one of his. He lost a real opportunity there.

Yeah, Lark had a great week of practice and then didn't do much once the teams went "live." Hopefully he'll have another great week of practice and then feel little more comfortable in the next scirmmage He closed the gap between him and Nelson last week and probably could have overtaken him with a better scrimmage showing. Maybe that will come next time.

I wonder how much of that was being with the 3's. I have to admit, I missed some of Lark's and Riley's series later on in the practice, but what I saw of Lark early on wasn't impressive. I think I only saw his first series though.

I just want to point out that the throw everyone is talking about Riley missing on was a really tough throw. Really tough. And it was also one Anae never would have called. Ball was on the right hash, and the throw was to the far left sideline. Great double move by the receiver turned the DB. Throw was not late, just thrown too far outside. Had he thrown it up field more, it is caught. But again, it is a long tough throw. Not a pretty ball, but not a horrible throw. Barely missed it. But it was one I loved seeing BYU dial up, because we have not attacked man cover on the far side of the field the last 4 seasons.
