Bronco indicated to Wrubbel that he has asked Doman to include Nelson in the offensive schemes as he has a unique skill set that can be used to keep defenses off balance. In my opinion he might be employed in a wildcat formation (run-throw option) or part of coach Dupaix's triple option involving FB, RB, SB, QB depending on how he reads the defensive line reaction. Could be some interesting plays and definitely a change of pace. Riley also appears to be in the best shape of his career so I expect he will be seeing some playing time as opportunities arise and definitely in a mop up role if games get out of hand (WAC teams - especially USU).

He's a great athlete, and can still contribute. I don't care in what capacity as long as BYU throws the ball downfield, scores lots of TDs and we have Ws.

I think Riley is going to see a lot of playing time against Utah State, San Jose State, New Mexico State, Idaho State and Idaho. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised to see him play the entirety of multiple fourth quarters in those games.

I like the change of pace he brings and the fact that opposing Defenses will have to prepare for different looks and packages, suited for Riley.

Mars! Ha-ha-ha! Come on my Brutha - show some love. You are way too tough on Riley. He'll be a solid back-up QB.

I could see if it was a short yardage situation, we could put him in and roll him out to the left. If someone's open short, complete the pass. If not, tuck it and run.

Beyond that though, I'd rather have Heaps in. You can run the same play with Heaps and get the same result.

I think he should hold for field goals. They could run a fake kick like last year.

I think his role is very offensive... :P

I kid, I kid. I like him handling the place kicks for many different reasons.

Remeber before Doman was a starter? Edwards and co would sneak him on to the field in the middle of a series and they'd run a QB draw for 10+ yards before the D would even recognize that the subtitution had taken place. Then they'd unceremoniously take him out and go back to the reguarly scheduled offense. I see Nelson spelling Heaps in such a manner...

also wouldn't mind seeing both Heaps and Nelson lined up in a shotgun spread formation as long as over time we run and pass equally from that formation (unlike wildcats that run 100% of the time).

Remember how they did this in 1999 which burned his RS year and then we were left with Lance Pendleton and Brett Engemann in 2002? If they hadn't been so stupid with his redshirt then, 2002 might have gone very different.

Heaps might get a better result scrambling because it would take the opponent by complete surprise - even shock that BYU would risk an injury to Heaps. So Heaps will likely be on strict orders which will make him more predictable. They can afford to risk injury to Nelson which would make him effective.

I hope to not see a lot of this as it can destroy momentum. If Heaps gets injured, Nelson's role will become quite clear and he will prove to be quite capable. I hope to see Lark or Munns get some reps and not just handing it off. We need to be willing to risk getting accused of running up scores to develop players and give them well-deserved opportunities.

I could see him in at the end of the game where we are running the clock out and there will be no thrown passes. Nelson is a better runner and can better help us to get the first downs.

P.S. Nelson finished 3rd out of the QBs in the fitness test yesterday. 1st and 2nd were Lark and Heaps.

I am hearing that the new offense changes have been tough on Riley, who was better suited for the Anae offense. Riley is not an under center, drop back passer, and that is what we are moving to. I heard that in 2 more weeks, it would not be shocking to see Lark listed as the #2 QB on the charts. From what I was told by people who were at practice yesterday, Lark looked better.

I think Bronco is working hard to massage an ego with Rley, and the kid deserves as much. He transferred from USU, and although he had no guarantees, many people went nuts over it when it happened and expected him to be the guy right now. Things happened and here we are.

If RIley sees the field, it wil be mop up duty, or a rare wildcat formation. About it.

Riley should have moved to Safety if he really wanted to see the field. That would have been a long-shot too, but it would have been a better shot, especially since Bronco really loves the kid.

There will be a place for him with his speed, toughness and running ability - especially considering Dupaix is also involved with this offense. He has some plays that fit Riley's strengths and will keep the defense unbalanced.

Wow. Sounds like he hasnt "worked very hard" during summer workouts.

Hate to kick a guy when he is down and out......of shape, but maybe he had an injury to his.......ego and thats why he was slow, because Bronco was massaging it. Maybe his sun glasses fell off during the test and he stopped to put them back on.

Um, finishing third is a sign of being out of shape? Not finishing a drill or meeting all the time hacks is a sign of being out of shape.

I wonder who finished third in the RB group. They're probably out of shape too. I sure wouldn't want to be the DL who finished fourth in his group, he'll probably never see the field.
