I want to see some more facts on this before I judge Franchuk. If he did force their hand then he should step up and take credit for it.
I've got to go all Mike Gundy on this. Davies is a 19 year old, and yet (according to this story line) Franchuk, the grown man thinks Brandon's mistakes need to make national news, but then Franchuk wouldn't take credit for it. If he did it, then he needs to man up and acknowledge it, like Davies.
Not going to happen in this case. Franchuk "manning up" and taking credit would result in a mass boycott of an already struggling publication. Franchuk and his editor fully comprehend that. Last thing they want is the Daily Herald to get Jimmered by millions of disgruntled BYU fans, their largest source of traffic/revenue.
I was talking to a friend of mine about this last night. If Franchuk did force/accelerate the situation with BYU I imagine it went down something like this:
BYU got a call from Franchuk (Carri Jenkins has admitted as much they got a call from a journalist) and the person who answered the call confirmed the rumor; consequently, giving Franchuck the 3rd party source he needed for his story. However, BYU knew they had a bit of wiggle room while Franchuk filed his story; so, BYU threw together a statement and released it before Franchuk's story broke, thus not giving Franchuk and the Daily Herald the satisfaction of scooping everyone while also making it look more like BYU was on top of the situation.
The fact a statement was released Tuesday night is fishy to me. The only time in my experience that I have ever released statements at odd times of the day/night is when I've had to. Releasing such a statement would give cause for the phones to immediately start ringing at BYU's comm department. If given a choice, every comm professional would choose to handle those calls during regular working hours according to their watch. If it was a controlled release, BYU would have had the luxury of putting out the statement during regular working hours.
