I am not pointing to specific plays. I am just trying to make a statement that it is not just one position group that is causing offensive break downs in the passing game. You guys think that I am trying to say that Heaps is the main problem here. I am not saying that at all, I am saying that the offense is strugging because we have a Freshman QB that is slowly improving. Yes, the recievers should be working harder to make plays that would have been easier if we had a veteran QB but the bottom line is it isn't the recievers making all of the bad plays, it is a combination of bad coaching bad throwing, bad catching, bad blocking. It isn't happening all on the same play. Different plays break down for different reasons, but the accumulative effect is that we are now 2-4 instead of 5-1. AND having said that, if Bronco had been in charge of the defense all year instead of just the last game, we probably wouldn't be 2-4 now regardless of the offense.

wow I think you are stretching it here a little saying it isn't about a specific play when in reality it is about specific plays, all the plays where the receivers have dropped the balls. I have gone on record before the season started that Heaps should have been redshirted, but I am not placing blame on him for dropped passes. I agree with you that timing is a huge part of the game and that both the QB and the WR needs to have that timing down for plays to happen, and this should get better. I will argue though that at this point in the year that timing shouldn't be an issue. Heaps has taken most of the snaps in practice and in the games since the 2nd qtr of the FSU game so everyone should be familiar with each other.... not a valid excuse here.

I went back to the thread that had the video of the dropped passes in the USU game because that is the only one I have access to right now and looked at how well the receiver was covered, how much the receiver had to reach for the ball and how the timing was, and if Heaps was under pressure. I didn't count balls that the receivers didn't even get a finger on, like the one thrown over the head of Mendenhall in the endzone, but where the receivers actually got TWO hands on the ball. Out of the 12 dropped balls, one was a bad pass to Hoffman in the left slot, Heaps fault, one to Jacobson who was covered really well, but Heaps put the ball where only Jacobson could catch it and he didn't, I give this one dropped to good coverage and one over the middle to Mathews who was covered pretty good but got 2 hands on the ball.

Other than these 3 passes all the other passes were on time, in the right spot, receivers open, and Heaps not under pressure so conclusion is it has been mostly the receivers fault.

ONce again, I am not putting blame specifically on anyone. I am just sick of everyone putting blame on everyone except Heaps. It all comes back to perspective. Everyone puts blame for us being 2-4 on our schedule, on coaching, on recievers not catching the ball but the bottom line is, we are 2-4 because during the first 6 games of the year BYU has played bad football. You can blame heaps PER rating and the fact that we are only scoring 16 pts per game this year and haven't ever even sniffed a 30pt game on the recievers, on the Oline, on Anae but the bottom line is our offense is just plain bad and the leader of that offense is Heaps. We have had a lot of break downs, we have had poorly thrown balls, we have had recievers who have dropped catchable balls, we have had olinemen that have not blocked well or have jumped early causing false start penalties, and we have had poorly called plays but when all is said and done, this years offense is bad. Heaps is not the main problem, but he is part of it and most of the posters on this board refuse to admit that he has had any part in the struggles. All I am pointing out is that Heaps shares in the blame.

Let me first say, I really like Heaps and how he is developing. In the Washington game he rocketed just about all the passes whether they needed more touch on them or not, but for the most part he has gotten away from that. Then in the USU game after a drop he rifled a pass on third down when it needed touch, but he has really gotten away from that. I bring these up not to say he isn't good but rather to say that he is clearly eliminating early mistakes. I also remember a play when a lineman was getting into it with an opponent after the play and Heaps ran down and grabbed the lineman by the chest and pulled him away...a clear leader. I am loving it and makes me look forward to future years.

But I would be really disappointed if we never see what Munns can do, although I am admittedly partial since he is a local. Still, a 6'5" 250 QB who was a 4 star recruit...I want to see what he can do.

Not true.

3 of his first 5 full games were TCU, BYU, and Cal and he had QB Ratings of 111.55, 86.91, and 173.03 respectively.

The two patsies were NM 169.81 and SDSU 120.28

Well, unless Heaps gets injured we never will. Heaps is the future of BYU and your first paragraph highlighted why. He has improved every week and I expect him to keep improving possibly to the point that we all forget about guys like Ty Detmer and Steve young.

This is what boggles me. For some reason, I remember Wynn having a killer year last year, to the point where I felt like Heaps was several furlongs behind Wynn in terms of freshman development. But this was mostly based on final scores and sports columnists - the only Wynn-led games I watched were BYU (not terribly impressive, but excusable for a freshman playing in a remarkably hostile game) and Cal (which was pretty impressive in the "wow, it might suck playing against this guy for the next two years" kind of way).

Looking back at the actual stats, though, Cal is really the only game that impresses me to a "Wynn played on a completely different level than Heaps in his first year" degree, which is not too surprising when you consider it was played well into December. His BYU game stat line is worse than I remember. His TCU QB rating glosses somewhat over the low comp % (16 for 32) and the fact that he never really established any momentum (3 plays accounted for 122 of 219 yards, two of which were back to back, and a couple 3-and-outs went with the pass each time). Understandable, since it was TCU, but still.

That leaves SDSU (Wynn's 120 v. Heaps 107.2 is pretty fair, considering SDSU was almost definitely worse last year and Utah almost definitely had a stronger supporting cast than BYU does this year), and UNM (which proves nothing, I think some high school teams could have had a 160 QB rating against them last year).

Not to dump on Wynn, I think he's a good QB and a good fit for Utah, but having looked at Wynn's 2009 stats I do feel a little bit better about Heaps.

Yeah, my post wasn't meant as a comparison between the two necessarily but to refute the claim that Wynn played against worse competition that Heaps has.

The 2012 U-Y game could feature two pretty dang good QBs.

For all its worth I think Lark is a stud and could handle the team just fine next year if something happened to Heaps. Not this year though since he just got off his mission.

Fact: Heaps has not played well. His PER is poor and BYU's offense is atrocioius.

Fact: BYU's offense showed real signs of life against SDSU.

Fact: Heaps is extremely talented.

Fact: Lark didn't return in football shape and his timing was off when he was competing for the job against Riley and Jake in the spring.

Fact: Munns didn't return in football shape and his timing was off when he was competing for the job against Riley, Jake and James. He really won't get a fair shake, IMO.

Fact: BYU's offensive woes are the blame of EVERY offensive player, however, right or wrong, the starting QB is going to get more than his share of blame or credit for poor or good play.

Fact: BYU is too much invested in Jake now to make a switch. "Sticking" with Jake through bad play is neither an endorsement of Jake or an indictment of James or Jason. It is simply a poor offensive team trying to find it's rhythm.

Opinion: Jake is the most freshman ready QB we've ever had at BYU.

Opinion: Jake will start playing better.

Opinion: Jake won't start real success until after the TCU game when the schedule gets ridiculously stupid.

Opinion: Jake will finish the year MUCh stronger than he started.

Fact: the coaches' decision to go with the 2-QB system screwed us big time and cost us at least one game, possibly 2

I was in the "I hope Heaps redshirts" camp before the season started and I still think that Riley Nelson's understanding and execution of the offense was better then Heaps. In fact I still think that Riley Nelson in the WA game ran the offense better then it has been run so far this season. Having said that, I don't think that Munns or Lark are an option right now or they would be getting a shot over Jake. Jake is the best QB that we have right now and that is why he is starting. I am hoping that his progression gets to the point where the offense starts looking like a BYU offense soon. Right now it has no rythm or flow. Last saturday was awesome because BYU smashed thier way to 270 yards of rushing but I don't think that is going to work every week. Jake is going to have to start completing passes on 3rd down for the offense to continue to move. If you read Wrubell's tweets this morning, it is painfully obvious that BYU has very little chance according to the current odds to pick up 3rd and 6+ with the pass.

Jake had his best day throwing on 3rd down against SDSU. A full 1/3 of his completions came on third down. But his 129.03 rating on 3rd down was his best on 3rd down by nearly 40 points. The only better 3rd down game BYU has had was Riley against UW - when he hit JJ for that long TD on 3rd down.

Riley was good at running "his" offense, certainly did not run "the" or "our" offense well-or at all, really.

wow, let's chillax for a minute.

Fact: even those in the "Nelson Camp" want Heaps to succeed. And I personally am hoping that Heaps becomes the QB of the future. He just hasn't shown me that he is above criticism.

While we are bringing up Nelson, I remember one of the biggest arguments against the guy was "He's not a BYU qb." Same goes for Heaps. I guess this begs the question, would you rather watch a BYU team that runs a "BYU offense" or a team that goes out and wins? Just win man, I don't care how you get the W. I think we are finding out that Heaps also isn't a BYU QB (when was the last time that the PER of a BYU QB was that low?) So now I'm going to hear about drops. So the receivers also aren't BYU receivers. They don't have the sticky hands and the toughness that we took for granted for 30 years at BYU. The entire offense isn't BYU football. When was the last time BYU's average score was in the teens? Ridiculous, right? Throw em all out. It's not BYU football.

Like I said before, who cares. It's obvious that at the moment Heaps is our best option, Unfortunately our crappy receivers are also our best options. What can ya do? Just get the wins men, I seriously don't care how ugly it is. I don't care if we run the ball 60 times or pass 60 times or if the QB runs 60 times. I just want BYU's score to be higher at the end of the game. If Heaps can get that done, he's the guy I want.

Opinion: When Jake does get it and our receivers stop dropping it our run offense will be a great compliment--and we will see last year's offense once again.

Matt Berry 2003 had a Broken hand with a metal screw in it and couldn't grip the ball especially when it was cold outside and he still had a 112 rating, and yet Matt Berry still takes criticizm on this board for his poor play.
