But don't we have another true freshman on our roster who would be perfect fort the option (Beau Hodge?) I'm not saying that I want that to happen, I'm just saying that there are some things in place if it did happen.



Also Mangum could probably declare for the draft this year and be taken in a later round by a team willign to develop him (Green Bay).

If you dump (essentially) Mangum to do an option with Hoge, BYU would have a hard time ever landing another passing QB or quality WR/TE.

That's the real problem and why I ultimately concluded Ken could only come on condition of not running the option. You essentially limit the offensive talent you will get, which with our schedule, would be slow program suicide. We don't have the defense in an independent schedule to have a lack luster offense. Likewise, we don't have such a far and away better offense that we can be lazy on defense. Cougar success needs strengths in both units. As long as we can pull in a Mangum or a Hill every few years, BYU will continue to be relevant offensively...assuming a good OC like Anae. As long as we have a good, defensive minded head coach coupled with Anae or similar OC, BYU will continue to have good years like this year.

Aside from the QB issues, BYU does not get the kind of athletes you need to run the wishbone or triple option successfully. You need guys that are fast, who can get to the edge, and make the first guy miss. You need 3 starters like that, one of whom is a QB, to run the wishbone, so that you've got one in the pitch back to either side and the QB. You also need backups for them. You also need fullbacks that are big enough to run up the middle all game, but fast enough that they can get through a hole if there ever is one. And then for the O-line you just find the biggest guys you got that have no qualms about going for someone's knees (looking at you, AFA).



At BYU, we don't get a lot of the edge speed guys. For backs, we usually get bigger, downhill runners. Right now, your wishbone look would probably feature JSwagg (if he stays), Beau Hoge, and Mitchell Juergens/Riley Burt. I don't know that we've got anyone behind them that would do well. We have no problem getting a huge O-line - the kind you want for pass blocking - but they're not the type you typically want for a run-dominated offense. We have a proven ability to recruit QBs that can break down a defense with their mind and their arm over almost 4 decades now. We have a stable of tall receivers that don't have fantastic speed or always get great separation, but who can beat you deep on occasion and who can use timing routes or route combinations to consistently pick up yards, because of the sheer number of them.



Football coaching is about taking advantage of your own strengths and exploiting your opponent's weaknesses. I don't think a good coach would attempt to run the triple option next year with who we've got. If this were 2001, sure, why the heck not? But we don't have the right personnel for it - instead, we're set up beautifully for an old-school BYU offense with lots of passing, check downs and draws to the backs, and power running between the tackles. It's 2006 all over again - all we need is another Harline. ;)

If you're Tom Holmoe you ask Coach Ken N. if he thinks he would want to run an option offense at BYU. Then you listen to his answer. Tom's a smart football guy and he knows what would work best at BYU. If he doesn't think Coach Ken will want to or can run a different offense you just hire someone else. I don't think you hire him with the stipulation that he has to run or not run a certain system. I think that's just bad policy. But if you don't feel comfortable with his answer then you make another choice.

A good coach adapts to the talent he has. Bronco wanted to run the 3-3-5 defense. But once he took stock of the talent in the program and the talent that traditionally comes to BYU he switched to the 3-4. My hope is if KN is the next coach he would do the same. If not...........
