This could change things for BSU.....and BYU as BSU is on the schedule.

@BFeldmanCBS: #BoiseState coach Chris Petersen is interviewing with #Washington tonight, source told CBS. (Last night)

Kellen Moore gone, Petersen gone, tougher schedule (WAC to MWC). Stick a fork in Boise, they're done.

Boise had better hope their AD hits a home run hiring the new HC or it could be a long long time before the Donks are relevant again..

I don't know that the current MWC is that much tougher than the WAC BSU came from.

It is tougher than WAC usually was. The WAC finished strong in its last year.

This is what people said when the previous HC Dan Hawkins left for Colorado and big bucks. Then look what happened to Hawkins trying to recruit and coach vs strong opponents.

BSU has always found a way to succeed at all levels they have competed. Lately, they had great success following The BYU Glory Years model. They scheduled success.

We will quickly find out if CP is an elite coach. I would imagine that he will be making $3M a year while he gives it the old college try.

We will see, but CP is legit. He was not a one year wonder, he has had good success for years. Keep in mind with Hawkins that many believe Petersen was the real brain behind all the BSU success.

This is a devastating blow to BSU, no doubt. Very unlikely they hit a home run 2x in a row. I agree with BerliNY.

He is legit vs a BSU schedule. Spiff made a list the other day of BYU season by season tally of opponents with 8-4 or better. Make that list for BSU and it may become clear why BSU coaches do not do as well at places like CU, Texas, etc.

Bib, he does not have the option to win more.....he just beats everyone on the schedule. They were way down this year, but it is impossible to win every year 10+ games every year, he would have had BSU back. Run his record vs ranked teams, I promise this is much better than other coaches in the Utah area (not naming names - KW and Bronco).

He has 4 top 10 finishes, two BCS game wins. This is not fluky. He is legit, if he had multiple BCS wins and multiple top 10 finishes anywhere this would be great, except the SEC. They beat OU (#10), TCU (#3 at the time), Oregon (2x while ranked), VA Tech (#6 at the time), Utah (#22 at the time, blew them out), and other wins vs ranked teams. These are not easy wins.....he beat real teams and did not just have a hard schedule with losses.

You can say he had an easy schedule, but he had real wins too and on the big stage. Would you rather have a tougher schedule and lose nearly all big games or win the big games when they count?

There will be growing pains like with any coaching change.....Petersen is a HUGE upgrade. He is not Dan Hawkins, and he is not going to CU or ASU (you mentioned UT, it is ASU).

the sos argument is flawed because he will have an easier time recruitnig nfl talent to compete with a more difficlut sos. he has proven that with nfl talent he can beat anybody. i think cp is legit and i think that it was more him that lead to hawkin's success than hawking.

I thought Texas had a former BSU Coordinator. Actually I know they did. Looked bad vs BYU this year. Not doing horrible at Texas - just not setting the world on fire. Lost a DC to Tennesee as well. Is Tennessee leveraged that into a #1 defense with NFL talent. It is not just BSU. Coaches and teams that upgrade SOS almost always get an eye opener. Not necessarily as much as Hawkins did or Ted Tollner at USC got, but Big Fish from Little Pond does not always swim as well in Big Pond.

It is different playing 8-4 type teams weekly than playing 1 or at most 2 really good teams per year. I like the BSU model, by the way, schedule wins, get experience and build confidence while preparing to focus on that annual tough opponent. Much easier when you can look past 3/4 of your opponents and get away with it.

Make the Spiff list for BSU showing win / loss and # of 8-4 opponents by season, and you will see a corellation with "down" years. There will not be many down years and there will not be many seasons with 8 strong opponents, either.

Just guessin.

Petersen is clearly a good coach. We are about to find out how good.

I think you are right about the coordinator. That further points to Petersen being a good coach, he is the brains behind BSU. I strongly dislike Urban Meyer, but wasn't he the same?

Bronco has not had a tough schedule until the past year or two, it pains me to say it but he is not beating top competition.....CP is doing it. These are not fluky wins, his wins are legit wins against top 25 teams and I cant think of a time with them really getting blown out; I am sure there is an example or two. I would rather have what BSU has had for 8 years vs what we have had, record and wins vs ranked teams.

Putting all the success or failures on a single coach in a system is overly simplifying an extremely complex system. Even the best coaches will run into periods of times where they flounder and do poorly, because winning is a complex mix of player talent, player leadership, coaching ability, coaching focus, recruiting, matchups against teams that were scheduled 5 or more years in advance, luck, and more.

PS

A schedule like BSU has most years would make Bronco and KWhitt look like LaVell Edwards who feasted on similar opponents.

Peterson just might be the next Urban Meyer. I am not saying he will not be.

As always, I will wait to see him prove it rather than assume it.

I hope he punks Oregon and USC and Stanford every year. But I already saw someone above in this thread managing expectations with words like transition challenges. Urban Meyer overcame any transition challenges. Maybe CP will.

What I worry about for him is whether he can transition his great rally the underdog, overloiked 3 star and below players to figure out how to deal with primma donnas like Texas and USC get. That is why I think UW is a better fit. They get fewer primma donnas.

Bib,

I think he can get to 10+ wins a year, it will take 3 years or so IMO. Urban walked into a ton of talent both places. UW has talent but not like Florida or OSU had.

He will recruit much better at UW than BSU. There is a reason UCLA, USC, UW etc etc all had interest in him.

Ironically, I have argued on here for 8 years for BYU to schedule like BSU schedules - does not win pipularity contests around here. Irony of it is all of the BSU envy. A solid coach, a good QB, and a weak schedule has long been the formula for Cinderella success.

But the question has always been

Can Cinderella drop the slippers and put in cleats and slug it out week after week - the answer is usually NO and lack of depth is usually the reason - especially when the QB goes down or does not perform.

Well. Worst case he makes $10M during the transition.

BTW Urban Meyer did not start his rise at Utah. He came thete from Ball State or somewhere if that ilk. He did not need a 3-year transition at U. He did not need a transition at F. He did not need a transition at The OSU. He would not have needed one at ND had he not turned them down.

CP will probably do fine at UW. Odds are greatly against CP bringing a NC Trophy to UW.
