And why are folks thinking that Reid would ever consider BYU? That's laughable. He's not. I would bet money. He's one of the good guys, tainted by the NFL salaries. He's not likely to serve his mission at BYU.

A head coach who has been the head man for 8 years, has ended the year in the top 25 5 of those 8 years and each of those 5 years had double digit wins. He has earned the right to have a "down" year.

Hawk, do you think you have a double standard for Bronco and Doman? How can you villify Domans ineptness while vindicating and holding Bronco blameless? Why did he hire an inexperienced OC? Why did Bronco insist on RN? These are questions you have not yet answered in the posts that I have seen--which isn't all of them, I realize.

If you were to insert Broncos name where you had Doman's within their respective assignment, it really wouldn't look all that different.

"He [Bronco] has started to realize that he's an average, on his best day, Head Coach, offensive-[ly minded] and a poor [eye for talent at] QB and fans expect [and] demand more."

Doesn't sound too far afield. Yes, his record Overall is Pretty strong. But he has far over promised and under-delivered. And is realizing that football 5th ain't getting the job done. Of course, football fifth wont be getting IT done anywhere else that absolutely demands football first. He's kind of stuck between a rock and a hard place.

But we love to scape goat folks at BYU and hang all the sins on that one person and send him away.

If/when Bronco leaves for a different job. BYU fans are going to bemoaning his loss, just like the did Chow and just like they are doing with Anae. BYU fans just can't get it right, we chase off good coaches/coordinators and they cry when they are successful elsewhere. You can't have it both ways. We are not Alabama who can fire a 10 win coach and get a NC coach to replace him. Bronco is the best coach for BYU and BYU fans need to be kissing his butt in order to get him to stay. Bronco says he doesn't read the papers and he may be right but if you don't think he isn't getting this same vitriol on the streets from his fan base you are kidding yourself. If you had done what he has done at this university and are getting the treatment he is now getting would you want to reward it by staying? I wouldn't either, I would leave and let the whole thing go back to what it was under Crowton.

I would say we all have our double standards. I openly admit to mine, which is far better than most people.

Bronco Mendenhall is the man in charge of the team. He's accountable for the team, just like a CEO of a corporation. He has coordinators who are in charge of their respective sides of the ball, offensive and defensive. Of course, Bronco is the defensive coordinator so he is fully responsible for the defense. Brandon Doman is fully responsible for the offense. That's his role.

In a company, the CEO is responsible for the whole operations, but when the shipping department is getting packages consistently shipped to the wrong address because the shipping employee is doped up on pain meds, you don't fire the CEO, you fire the shipping employee. If that employee isn't fired or the problem isn't corrected, you fire the vice president of shipping. If that doesn't happen in a timely manner or it still doesn't improve, then you fire the CEO.

Now, I can already hear your excuse, what if the CEO forces the shipping VP to continue to use the drugged out employee? Well, that does happen sometimes bosses micromanage their underlings and remove their decision making powers.

But I don't believe that's the case here. Bronco has always left the offense alone, it's one of his bigger failings as a coach. To believe that Bronco is constantly overruling a desperate Doman who's looking to start Lark is too far from any historical pattern to be believed.

I think an interesting question may be, why do so many people apologize for and defend Brandon Doman as a coach, is it because of his previous BYU sainthood? What has he truly accomplished as a coach during his time at BYU?

How do you determine which teams have "better talent" than we have, by evaluating recruiting classes? Did you take into account the missionary program and the fact that BYU doesn't have those classes on the field at the same time? I bet you didn't. BYU is 5-2 in bowl games under Bronco, what was Lavell legends record in bowl games? How many bowl games did the Ty detmer led teams win? Who are we going to bring in that is going to improve on what Bronco has done? Correct, no one.

I'm not convinced missions hurt overall. In fact there are many (including Gary Anderson) that think it helps. Lavell viewed bowl games differently. Giving that Utah and Utah state have better coaches, I can't think that it would be that difficult to find a replacement.

Yeah, that coach up north who hasn't had a positive year since 2008 sure is great.

Hawk, it's partly about trending. And Broncos ain't up. Anderson's clearly is. Given the lack of talent--he's changing that real fast; Record--surpassing all previous; fan support--well they have always been crazies up there; but fan-liking of HC, off the charts. I'm not sure how Andeson would do. Not sure the grad is any greener with him either.

And Frdbtr? Where is all the vitriol? What are you talking about? Your skin is about as thin as Broncos. Maybe he has a place for you on his coaching staff.

I'm talking about the clown coaching the Utes.

Anderson has had a great year this year. Though it's rather ironic that a troll is calling for BYU to replace their coach with another coach who got to 10-2 for the first time ever but lost to BYU. But I'm sure BYU fans would be much happier with Anderson coaching BYU to 10 win seasons instead of Bronco as long as he didn't say football was 5th #somefansaredumb

Huh? They have had two 10 wins seasons since 08. In 2010 they were #5 in the country with 3 games left. Bronco has never had BYU that relevant that late in the season. And those were his non positive years...

That #5 ranking was complete crap and everyone except the pollsters and utah fans knew it. For some reason utah has gotten so much love from the pollsters since urban meyer without it being deserved. Even in 08 utah got so lucky in order to preserve undefeated a couple of times. Of course that's what it takes to go undefeated in a lot of cases, luck. BYU didn't get that luck in 06 or it would have gotten undefeated. We got screwed by the refs against AZ and Simply didn't get a break against a very good Boston college team on the road.
S
SpiffCoug
Actually, we got several breaks against BC in 2006. We just couldn't take advantage of them. BYU scored on their first drive, BC fumbled on their first offensive play. BYU had 1st and 10 from the BC 26. That drive went backwards and ended in a missed 49-yd FG.

At the start of the 2nd quarter, Nate Meikle returned a punt to the BC 38, all BYU could manage was a made 45-yard FG.

BYU had another drive stall at the BC 33, resulting in a 50-yard made FG.

If BYU had made plays (like the did the rest of the season), they could have been up 28-6 in the middle of the 2nd quarter. Instead, they were up just 13-12 at the half.

BYU then missed two foruth-quarter FGs as well (44 & 51 yds).

BYU had their breaks and chances in that game, they just didn't capitalize.

John Beck wasn't the John Beck everyone remembers until AFTER the BC game. This was the game Beck sprained his ankles and missed the next week. He was lights out after the BC game. (149.05 PER after the BC game, 174.78 PER the rest of the season).

Fair enough! I don't read other boards. Its CC, CC tweet board, news articles--just about everything comes from CC.

But if Bronco is either reading or paying attention to the other crap out there, he has bigger problems. Again he says he doesn't listen, but he does? He says he doesn't care, but clearly he does. It's the same problem the outside of mormondom that folks had with Mitt Romney. My non LDS friend from PA said that nobody trusts the guy even though they want to. He's incongruent--and he was. Unless you meet him personally and get to know him. Same with Bronco. Bronco has created this problem mostly because of these reasons. He dumps and pokes at "undeducated fans" and then expects undieing love and affection? Well , at least in the form of shut up and let me do my job.

Bronco is a little bit like Jack Nicholson in "A few good men." [Insert classic tirade in courtroom] but Bronco would never let it fly like that and obviously he isn't guilty of the cover up of a death-- but boy he is having to cover his decisions and hates getting called out on it by anybody-- fans, media, nor TH.

It is all about level of competition and home field disadvantage.

Saint Kyle looked great. Then he had to step up to PAC 12 South competition on a level playing field and luckily avoiding Oregon and Stanford in cross-division play. Losing g record in PAC 12 for two years and running. Even with a lucky CLANK win over a wounded BYU team at home, Utah is not bowl eligible.

It will get even better - next year Utah gets to swap out WSU and CAL for Oregon and Stanford. Luckily for Saint Kyle, he does not have to give up home field advantage in PAC 12. Bold Bibster prediction: Utah will have its 3rd PAC 12 losing season out of 3 total - 100% - next year. It will also be their 2nd overall losing season. 2014 will be more of the same - guaranteed. Kyle will be gone after that, if not sooner.

Scheduling.

Saint Bronco was looking pretty good until BYU scheduled up and - predictably - more losses came along. But BYU also spotted home field or un-neutral field advantage at least once a year too. BYU has - predictably been down - other than not having a losing season, winning their bowl games, and having 10 wins in one of those down years. It will get worse in 2013. Schedule - pure and simple. Giving up home field. Pure and simple. Losing season - a real possibility.

Both teams did it to themselves. At least U got into the CLUB for doing it - sold their souls. Maybe U and 7-5 TCU should look at 10-2 BSU in a down year and rising SDSU at 9-3 and Fresno State, and join them all in creating a new MWC or other conference. Maybe U could mount a winning season again.

U: losing season - not bowl eligible

TCU: 7-5 - no BCS Bowl

BSU: 10-2 - No BCS Bowl - enjoyed final year in MWC - imagine BSU in Big 12 or PAC

SDSU: 9-3 - Filling in the MWC vacuum - before stepping slightly up to Beast - imagine them in PAC

Fresno State: See SDSU and BSU - 3-way MWC tie for 1st

BYU: 7-5 vs PAC or Big 12 schedule - road heavy

Oh how the mighty have fallen as others rise to fill the vacated space. BSU discovering that even MWC or BEAST tougher than WAC.

Speaking of WAC - lowly USU rise up to fill the vacated space.

And then you have NIU - BCS Bustin with 1 loss. USU - just a tough loss to BYU - where they gave away home field advantage - from a BCS Bowl and 1 loss AT AT AT Wisconsin or someplace like that - where they gave home field away again - from being in the NC discussion.

To be fair to Brett Richins, he has come out and stated his support for Bronco, despite what the commenters say on his site. He has been a bit caustic re: the offensive coaching staff, but DSOB is behind Bronco. Then again, if he went against Bronco, he'd never get a guest piece from a former Bronco players ever again.
