Should Coach Bronco Mendenhall Be Fired Poll

Ditto. But I can see the University and Bronco parting ways at some point in the not too distant future (within the next three years). I used to want Bronco to stay forever. As I have gotten older, I have realized there is no indispensable man. If he leaves someone else will come. The first coach to follow may not be as good, but eventually you will get a coach as good or better. BYU is set up really nicely to succeed for any good coach out there.

Bronco has earned the right to retire on his own terms, and I frankly hope it's not sooner than later, though I believe it will be.



BYU fans will then long for the day that we had national prominence and top 25 finishes under Bronco.



Fans seem to think they can bring in any old guy that used to play here and he'll be an instant coaching genius. I just don't think it works that way.

If a new coach comes in, I would not expect immediate success. Fans will have to be patient until the next great head coach comes along...patience is a virtue we don't have much of anymore. But if Bronco leaves, I am confident that BYU football will not just fall off the map. It is too good of a program, with some exciting match-ups not to draw talent. The real issue is finding another Coach like Bronco that understands what the Church wants out of the football program, what the boosters and fanbase wants out of the football program, and the ability to do both. In some respects, Notre Dame is proving it can be done (they don't have the same honor code, but they do have higher academic standards). LaVell did it once under much different circumstances. Is Bronco the coach that can do it now, or is there another coach right for BYU that can do it? Time will tell, but I think there are other great men out there as well.



Two principles to remember:

1.The grass isn't always greener, and if it is, sometimes it is because it is growing over the sewer.

2. On the other hand, there is no indispensable man--though it may take a while to find one just as good or better.

No way. Bronco is not a great head coach by any standard (except for never losing to patsies) but he's the best we can hope for right now unless there other alternatives readily available. I think this topic has been somewhat manufactured anyway. I don't really believe any big changes are actually going to take place.

Should he be fired? No.



Should they renegotiate his contract after it expires next year? Hell no.



Take his last year and give the program time to do extensive research and find the right man for the job. Take your time. Unless Andy Reid shows interest after stepping down from the eagles... Then you tell bronco he is welcome to stay as a dc and asst head coach for as long as he likes.

No and this is coming from someone who can't stand him. He is definitely an above average coach and he should not be fired. i hope he extends to be honest.

Absolutely not. Bronco has represented BYU extremely well. Remember that BYU is more than just football. If that irks you, you're missing the bigger picture....and that is not and should not change.



You can't ignore BYU's string of top-25 finishes. This year was disappointing, but we still finished with a winning record and COMPETED against 5 top 25 teams, 3 on the road and in the game until the end at the Number One team in the nation! Note that based on a comparison of our on-field performances, Sagarin still ranks us as the #21 team in the country.

(Look at the "Predictor" ranking, which is the unbiased analysis that actually accounts for game scores and performance, not just the hokey BCS-approved, politically-correct win-loss record nonsense)



Had we run NIU's or Utah State's schedules, we would probably be in the BCS this year. But would we rather not play Notre Dame or Boise State or Oregon State? Would we rather play Tennessee-Martin, Ball State, UMass, and Toledo?



Sure there have been and will continue to be some coaching mistakes. But, go look around the NCAA, fellas. If you're expecting BYU football to be at the same level as Alabama or Ohio State, it's just not going to happen.The fact that we're even considering to fire the coach after a 7-5 season in which we narrowly lost to the #1 team on the road tells you that we have it pretty good.



But, I think our expectations are a little high. We have a decent fanbase and good stadium and facilities. But we are not top 10 in any category that really matters. And we have the honor code. Try not to overreact. Sit back and enjoy the bowl game in San Diego. It should be a good game.

No. Unless BYU can find someone better. But who would that be? they could try for Gary Anderson. Or maybe Andy Reid wants to come for 20% of what he was making previously (and he has to lose the stache).



The question should be who would be a better coach at BYU and let us guess odds they would come to BYU for ~300k/yr.

No question - NO. He has done a lot of things well but has made some major mistakes. What the fans really want is for him to change and correct the errors. That is all and then he and the team will have much more success.



He needs a good OC with full control to get the job done. BM should not pick the QB or be involved. He needs to give more of the DC duties to an Assistant during the game so he can focus on HC decisions and being proactive instead of reactive during the game.

I am not convinced that Gary Anderson or Andy Ried is a better coach than Bronco. Anderson had a great year this year, lets see him sustain it. Plus will either of them be able to manage the mission situation? Can they win with the types of athletes that BYU can get due to the honor code? Bronco is the best coach for BYU I don't care if he has an infatuation with Riley Nelson.

Actually - Anderson was quoted recently re the formula for success at USU.



Focus on recruiting local players

Encourage missions



They have also discovered Polynesia



We may have stolen their colors - but they stole our formula.

Anderson beat 7 teams this year that had better talent (per Scout.com). That's good coaching. We only play 3 teams a year with better talent and Bronco averages nearly 4 losses.

In principle, NO. But when you are checking out the Menu options..... How committed will he be next year for the extra mile efforts it will take during a tough schedule? Will BM be a lame duck coach? I guess he can't afford to be if he wants to land a good job. If he goes 6-6 next year, his stock lowers. I bet he interviews in several more places this year as the coaching carousel turns.

Again, another interesting clue is that BD is putting out his résumé as well. Does he know something r is he sick of Bronco? I can't believe that Bronco would want to start all over with an OC in the last year of his contract.

And why are folks thinking that Reid would ever consider BYU? That's laughable. He's not. I would bet money. He's one of the good guys, tainted by the NFL salaries. He's not likely to serve his mission at BYU.

I do expect it from the head coach. He made a very bad decision in replacing Anae with Doman and I hope he's looking to rectify that poor decision.
