Sounds like Riley still might not understand...

On the tweet box, Jeremiah Jensen tweeted a quote from Riley Nelson:

I ran when I needed to run playing with fractures in my back. Now that they are healed I don't expect to play any differently

I hope my interpretation of this quote is wrong, and/or I hope there is more to the quote and this is being taken out of context.

First of all... Riley said fractures in his back. That's huge!!! Why in the heck was he trying to play through something like that??? More so, why on Earth did the coaches allow him to play when he had fractures in his back.

Second, he says "I don't expect to play any differently". He just doesn't get it. His scrambling all the time led to this injury. If he trying to get himself killed?

He needs to stop playing however the hell he wants to and start playing smart to avoid injury.

Apparently, he's just not that smart

Oh, you mean like that other QB who played here last year.

No like a player who doesn't get himself killed because he can't throw the ball away, or slide to avoid contact. We're already down one QB for the season because they ran him too much, do we really need to go down to our third string because none of our QB's or coaches knows when or how to avoid contact?

Heaps played scared. All I'm asking Riley to do is play smart. Getting yourself smeared into the ground on every play isn't playing smart.

You mean like last year when he got injured standing in the pocket? Or 2010 when he got injured in non-contact drills in camp? Or do you mean Florida State or AFA worsening it when Reynolds was injured / sick and the OL was porous. Or do you mean like Jake Heaps' ribs when opponents came after him with ears pinned back because they knew he would not scramble. Or do you mean like OSU's Mannion who got injured "handing off the ball?". Or do you mean like Hill, who was injured by a less than vicious hit that just happened to directly hit his knee when his foot was planted?

It is football - and we have an OL that struggles to block without holding, and backs who struggle to pick up blocks on blitzes.

It is very unfortunate that Hill's freakish injury came when the inexperienced QB when told to run the click tried to run a play and coaches did not call time out - most likely because that was the whole point - keep the clock running.

I do not like to bag on coached or players, but confusion and indecision about getting plays called, personnel in, and thus wasting timeouts has been an issue. In this case they had timeouts to waste, could have called time-out with 1 second on the play clock - except Hill was running a play without waiting for the clock to run down.

Inexperience - QB - BD - BM.

It is difficult for me to conceive of us finishing the season without Lark starting games and Kuresa running Wildcat - very difficult. Unless coaches decide to demote Lark again and get Munns or AO, or J Kuresa ready for 2013.

I hope we get a Harvey Unga and Manase Tonga and a dominant OL ready for 2013.

Oddly enough, the times Riley has been hurt badly have been on pass plays, not running plays.

On running plays it is easier to prepare to take the hit, vs being hit while throwing or being blind-sided. Except on a freakish hit like Taysom got direct to the knee with foot planted. I have even seen players get leg injuries when sliding and a cleat gets stuck.

Ungoy,

I'm afraid it's you that doesn't understand. The guy does not quit. Doesn't even know how. It's his greatest strength and biggest weakness. He will get that first down/stand in the pocket to deliver a pass or literally break his back trying.

By the way, it was spinous process fractures, and while it is a "broken back" it's not life or limb threatening and besides a considerable amount of pain, won't hurt Riley long term. The fractures are probably not completely healed either, but if they aren't hurting, it shouldn't slow Riley down.

Get ready for some wild Riley offense which with the help of an absolutely stellar Defense should take out the Beavers pretty easily. Have I mentioned I get to go to this game?!??!?!?!!!!

Let's Just hope that Rley won't be on so many pain meds he can't see straight or think straight, similar to UTah and BSU. After all, "Riley wasn't Riley." (BDoman)

Remember when RGIII got knocked out of a game when sliding?

Dose him up!! Certainly he has to be tougher than all the rest of [the Skins]--on meds, that is. :-)

I don't get it. We are all up in arms that our QB's are running the ball way too much when Hill gets hit and is lost for the season. Now that Riley's back in, people are now fine with the status quo of "damn the torpedos, full speed ahead" that has got two QB's hurt bad this year, with one gone for the season, and the other in who really knows what shape. Yes the O-Line is bad, but the QB's aren't helping the situation when they plow into linebackers on every other play (hyperbole). It isn't a good thing when your QB is one of the leading rushers in number of touches.

I'm fine with Riley scrambling at times when a play is broken, but the designed draws need to be dialed back a ton. The option needs to be used far less often, and our QB's need to stop taking on linebackers, and risking further injury in order to get an extra yard.

Yes, in years past, Riley has been injured when standing in the pocket, but both the injuries this year have come on designed QB draw plays. We are running the QB way too much. Teams are prepared for it, and we need to make the deep threat credible with both Hoffman and Apo. Right now, teams know that the QB is going to scramble and run a lot, and they are becoming more and more ready for it.

In case you people haven't noticed, the way our QB's have played with such reckless abandon this year have caused major issues with who is going to be the starting QB from week to week. Players need to play smarter, and coaches need to coach smarter. Our QB's are taking way too much contact, and much of it is initiated by the QB. At this rate, we'll be starting Munns or Kuresa before the end of the year.

I am concerned with Riley's statement. If I was Bronco and Brandon, I would sit down with Riley Nelson and have a "War Room Policy" meeting. QB scrambling would be to buy time, to execute a play - that's it. No more scrambling to move the ball a few yards.

Unless - only under 2 circumstances would I give the green light for a BYU QB to scramble to gain yards now. 1. A TD. 2. A critical 1st down. But, BYU is loaded with offensive weapons whose job it is to get yards in tough situations. The QB must use those weapons and not his legs.

The reality is, we have some tough defenses in the near future (Oregon St., Notre Dame, and Georgia Tech). These guys will chew our QB's up send them all to the hosp. Riley Nelson needs to be wise and make decisions for the team's best interest. If Bronco and Brandon don't have a severe change of tactics, all our QB's will be done for the year.

Go Cougs!!

Agree with the previous two posts.

Doman and Bronco need to have a "come to Jesus" talk with Riley. He needs to play smart. Scrambling to extend a play or gain some yards when he has space to get is ok. Designed runs will be one maybe two a game.

His primary AND secondary priorities are get the ball OUT of his hands and into the hands of Hoffman, Apo, Falslev, Williams, etc. Whether that is by handoff or pass, the ball needs to get OUT of Riley's hands and into the hands of those guys.

And ANYone who thinks I have MY head in the sand in regards to this team and its QB play is up in the night and can go pound the sand in which they think my head is buried.

+1. Bam!

Hey, I have a question about that sand your head is buried in ( ;) ). Is it that grainy Malibu sand from So. Calif? I don't care for that. Or, is it imported black sand from Punalu'u, Hawaii? Mongo like.

Can't Doman and Bronco just use the commitment pattern on Riley to convince Riley of the errors of his ways?

Missionaries don't use the commitment pattern anymore. I, for one, am glad because too many did not use it in the spirit intended but more as manipulation (one of my companions for one).

People change when they want to change. Riley doesn't want to change. Bronco should threaten some changes if Brandon Doman doesn't make some changes. Changes should already be imminent in the Offensive Line Coaching category.

Well, what ever pattern the coaches are using with Riley to get him to change his ways, it is clearly from the less effective example side.

It was a TIC comment. Very well aware of the manipulation pattern.

I just wanted to explain why it wasn't used anymore--as far as I know, that is. I knew you were using it TIC. Look at my avatar. Nothing gets by me.
