Confirmed: Hill out for season after botched call

Wrubell confirming on twitter right now. Hill will have season ending surgery to fix multiple injuries in his leg. Wrong call was given to Hill or Hill misinterpreted the "roll the clock" motion to mean, "run the play". Either way, bad idea to be calling a qb draw under the circumstances. Bronco accepting responsibility. Also admitting that the qb is running too much or they need to be avoiding contact when they do. Sad that it took an injury of this magnitude to make the coaches realize this.

According to trainer, Hill will likely not be allowed in spring ball. The ligament-tendon injury is uncommon and will be 4-6 months of healing at a minimum.

The whole thing is sickening. We can't have these kinds of miscommunications. It is slightly comforting to know that it was not a designed play though but is still sickening.

Bronco is also confirming what all the stormy clouds have been bitching about for the whole weekend. The QB running numbers have to come down.

I don't think the "miscommunication" excuse is really that exonerating. It was still the designed play. It sounds like at best, Hill misinterpreted the "roll the clock" motion for "run the next play" and at worst, Hill saw the call come in, and turned his back before they then changed it (pretty ridiculous if they couldn't get a timeout called if that is the case.) Either way it is an inexcusable mistake by the play caller. Why in the world are they calling a qb sneak at that point in the game in the first place? Why are they running a qb option a play before that?

Sad. Both of the QB's that started for BYU and OSU last week are out for Saturday. I can't wait for Saturday. BYU vs. top 10 team, new unis, and its my birthday. I wont be able to watch the game though, have to go camping... :~(

Not defending what happened. These kind of "miscommunications" can't happen. But he ran 18 times before that without injury so it is simply football. If the injury hadn't happened with just over a minute left in the game the criticism of our coaches wouldn't be nearly as hot.

Maybe this will force bronco to play his best QB, James Lark. Or maybe they will surprise everyone and #FreeMunns.

If James Lark was BYU's best QB he would have been playing long ago and wouldn't have been demoted behind a freshman straight off his mission.

The call made was victory formation, Hill just didn't see it, having turned away too early. This is not to excuse the play calling, as I've been very vocal about how it's been poor.

I would also expect an NCAA level qb to know when he can run the clock out, but Doman still should have had the victory formation signal in earlier, but late play calls have long been an issue with him, causing BYU to burn through timeouts.

Lark is probably the best passing QB on the roster, and would be able to take advantage of or best offensive weapons in Hoff & Apo.

Wrubell Tweet: Doman: "I don't know that I'll ever get over (Hill) getting injured the way that he did and the circumstances of how it happened."

Sounds like Doman feels sick about what happened.

Something about that doesn't quite add up though, at least not enough to exonerate the play call. "Miscommunication" is a broad word, so I admit I may be reading into it a bit, but in Bronco's presser afterwords he specifically mentions that Taysom saw the rolling motion and interpreted it to mean, "run the play" instead of, "the clock is ticking" (not sure why that message would be coming from the sideline in the first place.) That means the qb draw play was already called, as Taysom knew it was the next play to run. What, in the holy name of the flying spaghetti monster, was going through Doman's head to call that in the first place? Yeah, his play calling has been very questionable. Yeah, he's had trouble getting the plays in on time. But this is beyond both of those.

Other Wrubell tweet: Doman says he asked Bronco Mendenhall to call time out before the injury play, but that Mendenhall "didn't get to the ref in time."

Before the injury was known, Bronco was also quoted as saying it is because Taysom was good at the run but the passing game had not caught up for him and that runs would be managed down when it did catch up. Taysom was quoted after the game as saying he felt more comfortable than the prior week but was still learning the passing game. That is why they had to run it more than they had Riley run it. And if our fullbacks and rb and OL were up to snuff - IMHO - they could have carried that load.

Our lack of a non-QB running game to put fear into the hearts of the defense is the heart of our problem and had been since 2010 and the OL is part of that lack. It puts too much pressure on QB runs and passing and defenses unload on the QB whether running or throwing.

I have long wanted to see Lark get his shot - and odds are, he will. But how can you or anyone else know how effective in the heat of battle vs a quality opponent? He has never been in that situation at D1 Foorball level. Never.

Mop up is quite different and he has only had a tiny bit of that. Unfortunate. He should have been given a shot in 2010.

Doman's love affair with the running quarterback leads to this series of events. Run the QB too much and he will inevitably get hurt. It is not the same for a running QB as a runningback or fullback ... it isn't a commentary on the physicality of a QB, it is a fact of life that for most runs the RB and FB get the "head of steam" before they get the ball and the world starts teeing off on them. QB's don't get that luxury.

This one lies on Doman ... bad choices, and his love of the running qb. It will destroy more qb's than it makes (even if Doman's play-calling wasn't so suspect).

This is a shame.

Lark will/should do fine. OSU struggled with WSU ... BYU should win. BUT, Doman is going to have to change his play-calling strategy and let Lark throw. Doman proved his disdain for throwing when, after an exciting and effective end to the first half, he came out the 2nd have and refused to throw. Interesting is not necessarily a good word ... but that is exactly what it will be against OSU ... interesting.

I think the O-line woes, which have basically forced Nelson and Hill to run more often than necessary has created this entire mess.

How many times this season have we heard that there was a miscommunication? Miscommunication with snaps, miscommunication at play calls, miscommunication with OL expectations, etc. Is anybody on this team communicating? Couples therapy maybe?

Geez.

Let's not have to wait till we hit rock bottom before changes are made.

The only thing that concerned me from todays reports was that Nelson got 100% of the reps.

That's putting all your eggs this week in a pretty fragile basket.

Does seem odd for a team so committed to execution, right?
