Been staring at the tape from the last couple outings and specifically watching how Scalley runs his coverages. Utah loves to rotate that boundary safety down into the box on early downs to stop the inside zone, which leaves their single high corner on an island if we can win the leverage battle outside. When we go 12 personnel with Walker Lyons, we actually have the mismatch to exploit that if we run play action off our standard run looks. Gotta keep Retzlaff moving and hit the intermediate breaking routes before their linebackers can drop underneath. Curious how many snaps we see of that look on Saturday.
Film study: How we attack Utah's boundary safety
Great breakdown on the boundary safety stuff. Reminds me of how Puka used to win those exact outside leverage battles before tearing it up in LA. When recruits see guys like Puka and Fred Warner starring on Sundays, they know our scheme translates directly to the pros. Using 12 personnel to stress their box safety is the exact right counter.
Having watched from Section 32 for thirty years, I have seen Scalley run that exact same defensive scheme more times than I can count. He loves loading the box to stop the run on first down. If our tight ends can chip the end and get into their routes cleanly, we will find those one-on-one matchups outside. Patience is key here. We just need to punch it in once we get down into the red zone instead of settling for three.
