WCC arena and MC comparison

Sucking the hind teat of the conference is Pepperdine at 3104. I wonder if those four extra seats are folding chairs. The MC is more than SEVEN TIMES LARGER than that one.



here's another perspective. BYU's baseball stadium seats 2710. Just 400 less than San Diego's b-ball stadium.



Oh, one more thing. BYU women's soccer through the first 3 home games of the season

is averaging 4,445 people which would be larger than 3 of our future men's basketball arena conference members' capacities. Dave Rose has to be pounding on TH's door asking for Kansas, K-state and the rest. WCC is a bit small

The average Big12 basketball arena holds 13,496 people. Which means we aren't that far away from doubling the capacity of the Big12 too.

Right, but we are not only doubling the WCC arenas, we are quadrupling them and beyond.



That is king of funny. I wonder if we will want to play on the road more than at home, because there are less people in the stands (and still a majority of BYU fans cheering).

All WCC arenas seat a total of 36512 butts without the MC. With us, we make up 38% of all the seats in the conference (59212).



or in other words, our 22,700 seats make up 62% of the rest of the conference put together.



and you don't have to play in an arena named after a women's diet program

If anything, the size of the WCC facilities should put BYU at a disadvantage when they travel. On the other hand, as I recollect from being present, a very poor LMU team didn't seem intimidated the last time they came into Marriott. Check the final score.

If anything the small gyms will remind our players of playing in high school, so it could be to our advantage.



The last time LMU came to town was also the first game in our head coach's career. He hasn't lost many at home since then - espeically in-conference.

The arena wasn't even half full (there were less than 10,000 people), and BYU was coming off a 9-21 season. Not much to be intimidated by, and NOTHING like the current state of the program/fans.

I do hear that the Marriott Center is tricky for shooters because it's so wide open behind the hoop as a result of the seating arrangement/entrance tunnels that it's a bit of an adjustment to get the depth perception right. That combined with the elevation--which affects both the travel of the ball as well as the players' ability jump late in games--could make long nights for shooters who can't adjust.

I'll buy having to adjust your depth perception and elevation effecting your hops late in the game, but I doubt the air pressure makes any noticeable difference for a ball traveling a little over 20 feet for a three pointer.



It'll be interesting to see how stadium sizes effect players (ours and theirs). It might make for some slow starts for our guys playing in small arenas (I remember it happening at Wyoming a few times), but once you get into the flow of the game, their focus is solely on the game at hand.

My question is do they fill the seats in those small arena's. I'm sure the Zag's and maybe St Mary's but does Pepperdine fill those 3104 seats or do they usually have half empty arena's? I'm sure there will be lots of Y fans in those areas but even with that will there be enough seats for us. I just think it's a mismatch and a bad deal from the get go and hope we can do better with the Big 12 asap!

Yep, one game score from years ago really gives you a solid argument. Way to go!

Does it make any sense (or is it allowed) to look for alternate venues for BYU road WCC games? Civic arenas, other college campuses, etc.



I'd think that in that geographic footprint you'd be able to sell 5-8K tix quite easily. Youth activity, anyone?

If any of these venues is only selling 50% of its tickets, doesn't that make every one of these arenas a home away from home on "mormon night?" Seems to make sense that everyone one of the arenas will be very favorable to BYU Basketball.

Somehow, Cougar fans are unable to understand that a loss is a loss. Each and every one should be painful with no excuses accepted like first year coach, half-filled arena, etc.

So, what excuses do you make for your team CURRENTLY being irrelevant and winning nothing while BYU basketball gets national attention?

I don't recall making any excuses. We win - it's good. We lose, it's bad.
