BYU as #10 and Boise as #12 to Big XII

I'm surprised it has taken this long for Boise States' name to come up in the Big XII rumors. Assuming BYU is invited into the Big XII as the 10th team, I am very supportive of Boise getting in to make it a 12 team conference. Boise makes a great travel partner and would be an excellent end of season rivalry considering its a five hour drive to their place.



I know Boise is only a football school now, but I firmly believe being in a BCS conference would improve their ability to recruit for the other sports and their basketball will improve. As a comparison, Air Force also rumored as a 12th team possibility would be the doormat of the league and probably wouldn't ever improve. In football they would probably finish in the bottom 2 of the league most years and on good years they would be middle of the pack. In basketball they would be the worst team in the league and would never have the ability to recruit better athletes to improve the team. Conversely, Boise would be at least capable of getting better recruits to improve their other programs.

The Boise stuff is still rumor though.



But he BYU stuff is on the $$$. Told will be official by this time next week. And perhaps as soon as today. But by next Wednesday.

Personally, I am not a huge fan of BSU coming into the B12. I have nothing really against them, but they do not make much sense to me. They are a football only school with a small media market and low academic standards. I understand that all of this is football driven, but at the end of the day the B12 has to look at itself and say, did we improve our conference overall. I just don't see BSU doing that. But, I that is my opinion. If they were added then I would agree the would be a nice regional partner and instant rival. Heck, they already have some unnatural hatred of BYU.

The other advantage of having Boise with us is that we would not be the only western outlier for the conference. It always better to be on an island with a partner rather than by yourself. Also Boise is about an hour further away than BYU is for the other schools. Let Boise take the brunt of the complaints about travel times from the other conference members.

No offense intended here, Lawboy, but I think this is the 8th date I've seen you give as to when this will all be official, going back over several weeks and months.

And hopefully, one of these times he'll be right.

Dick Harmon noted this week that there are only probably 3 individuals who know more certainly about this issue (at BYU) and none of the 3 are talking and I don't see any of them talking unless there is something official. So where is this information coming from? Are there Big 12 moles being authorized to leak info? I don't know that I buy that. It's hard no to believe at this point that this is all wishful thinking. Has BYU been in discussions with the Big 12 at some level? Yes, I think with all the evidence it would hard for TH to look anyone straight in the face and deny that at this point. The hurdles, both our and theirs, are what worries me.

and I don't care how many dates he's given out. You can't hold him to specifics when the decision makers at the top change their minds. He was probably right on each date, but then Oklahoma holds a hissy fit, then Missouri is leaving, then they're not, then they are. Now they're not. etc...

We will know something one way or the other between today and October of 2012.

Make that between now and June 30, 2012.

Lawboy has it right. It's June 30, 2012. That's the day we have to give the Independent Conference Commissioner our notice of intent to leave or be subject to countless lawsuits and an enormous Independence exit fee.

I'd rather have Louis in the Big 12 than BSU. Or WVU. Or Pitt (I know, not happening. Whatever, this is my fantasy). Hell, I'd rather have AFA that BSU.



Outside of Fball, Boise adds NOTHING. Except a Big 12 conference affiliation would allow them to compete for more of our recruits from the West. Keep expanding East, Big 12! Leave BYU as the only "western" team! We don't need the added recruiting competition!

I was actually just thinking about the recruiting thing myself. Great minds...Anyway, if we are in the B12 I do not want to have another team besides the pukes to compete with for recruits. It is tough enough competing with the pukes for the recruits and if we are in, then there is a somewhat level playing field. We don't the the doncos up in Boise messing with things.

Whether you like it or not we are already competing with Boise State for recruits. If they are the only non-BCS power left outside of the BCS its going to be pretty easy for them to crash the BCS every year. They can sell that to recruits just as easily as they could sell being in the Big 12 and only going to the BCS once every ten years probably. Also I don't think they are going to poach recruits from Utah. They may do better in California, but we are already competing with every California school and Pac 12 schools for the California recruits. The kids Boise ends up getting probably couldn't qualify at BYU anyway.



An easy solution to the blue field is tell them their invite is conditioned on replacing the field with a green one. I believe the MWC put restrictions on them wearing blue to their home games and they agreed to that.

You're right, we are. And if they are in the Big 12, that will allow them to compete more strongly for our recruits. That was exactly my point. DOn't need to give them the recruiting boost. I think the BCS bowl angle is overblown - I think that most recruits would react more to being able to play Texas, OU, OSU, TT, MU, etc, etc, every year, than having to play crap teams every year and then hopefully playing in a BCS bowl game.



The smurfyewts can rot in the MWC for all time. Afterall, they finally got what they wanted ;)

My vote is for WV. I just moved my family to northern Virginia, and I would love the chance to see the cougars live every other year!

I used to live in the eastern panhandle of W.V. so seeing as WVU is one of my favorite teams I would love to travel to morgantown for some games, although now I live in Utah, but at least I could wear a blue WVU shirt at a home game where we would get to play them and maybe like a BYU hat although I'd definitely be rooting more for the cougars.
