Big 12 Negotiation details

What is the holdup on an annoucement re the Big12? We know they are talking. We already know about Sunday play, broadcast rights and stability (maybe we are waiting on them signing their tv rights to the league but that can't be the holdup). Here are some possible issues:



When football will start? They want next year. It appears the contract with ESPN does not start until 2013 so we could stay indy an extra year.



Will all sports or some of them join and when? We might want to delay the move over or even keep some teams in the WCC like woman's soccer. We like the league and travel will be shorter/cheaper. Because this is taking so long it could impact the WCC if they move next year.



Tier 3 rights? Tier 1 and 2 football will cover most of our games so that is not a big issue. What about re broadcast? EXPN has allowed us to rebroadcast after the game. FSN allows after 72 hours, not a big issue. What about tier 3 which belongs to the home team. The home team can sell to their local tv. Can we simulcast or rebroadcast those road games? this could be the big issue holding things up.



Sunday play? Conference tournaments could have the champtionship game on Sunday and if we make it them move the game to Monday in that case. For basketball that does not work due to selection Sunday. They would have to change the schedule or have co-champions. Not a big deal but two solutions to the problem.



KBYU giving us an unfair advantage? They could be concerned about this in regards to recruiting. Just like the age issue due to missions. I am a little surprised they are afraid of us.

The Big 12 has had their conference championship game on Saturday for basketball for a number years now. Sports like baseball, golf, swimming, etc are more affected by the no sunday rule.



We are under contract for bowl games in 2012 and 2013. We'd have to get out of those agreements. Also we have to buy out at least six games currently under contract for next season.

Right. Shows how much I know about the Big12. I hope they don't hold that against us. I never watch any of their braodcasts.



Our buyouts would not be part of the negotiations but they would need to be done.



Another issue might be that Texas has to come to the Y the first year since we played them there. Oklahoma might be saying they don't want to play us at all or that we play Texas the week before they get Texas.

You oversimplify complex issues. BYU is after rebroadcast rights, not 3 days later, but immediately, as well as other concessions related to the TV contracts. Other issues are well known, but could relate to football for 2012 other sports for 2013 or later, and that revenue share. Among other deals BYU has to get out of, such as bowls, and games on schedule.

Yes the rebroadcast issues are complex. I don't understand all of them yet. But if the contract says 3 days then FSN will have to change it and I don't think they will unless they are desperate for us to join or they ask for a fee.



As you can see there are other parties to these discussions. I wonder if there are any missionaries talking to Dave Brown on this?
