USU game thoughts

Bronco stated that he would love to coach Robert Turbin as a Y running back - thinks he best in the state and will be quite the challenge to contain. We also will be facing another mobile QB with great running ability in Chuckie Keaton (Frosh QB) - he plays like last year's QB - Dionte Borel and UCF QB Godfrey. Anyway, Bronco noted that USU will feel like it has a solid chance to defeat the Cougars on Friday night.

What do you think are the keys to victory or what we need to focus on to prepare for the Lowgies?

8 in the box, and roll up a safety.

USU had 86 passing yards against CSU. 86. Against CSU.

But they also had almost 300 rushing yards.

Key to beating USU: Shut down the run.

Perhaps I am remembering wrong, but didn't their pass game look pretty good vs. Auburn. I think that the littlest brother up North is looking a little better this year than previous years.

Yeah but they threw mostly screens and short little dumps, which for some really weird reason seemed to catch Auburn off guard and it took most of the game for their defense to adjust. I don't recall there being too much stuff being thrown over the top.

Again, they had 86 passing yards on Saturday. Against CSU. At home. Even when the run game is rolling, a team should STILL be at LEAST 150 passing yards. Especially against CSU.

Defense needs to stop the run.

Heaps needs to complete more than 50% of his passes.

They find ways to score. We don't consistently. We clearly need to make little Chuckie beat us with his arm, which he may do. The defense will need to stay fresh in the 4th qtr to do this. For that to happen, rotation of the DL will be key - they are the first ones to tire. Most of all, no turnovers and move the chains and pound on USU and get them tired. They seem to get tired and also make mental errors late in the game. Special teams doesn't need to win it for us - but hey - ok if they do again - but ST can't lose it for us - gotta give us field position and make kicks.

As usual, this will come down to Jake Heaps. If he throws with precision and consistency for four quarters, that will overcome all other ills of the staff and players unless we get another fumble festival. No other single player or coach is in a position to lift other boats to this extent. if Heaps delivers - credit him for LEADING this team to a win. If he doesn't deliver, pop in Nelson or Lark and hope they can salvage a win.

I recognize that neither Nelson nor Lark have beaten out Heaps in practice. And that is not the issue and the fact that Heaps has gotten almost all of the reps is not the issue.

This is the issue. Heaps does not play like he practices. One of them might very well play better than Heaps is playing.

Heaps needs to have a 136 PER or quit football altogether. How could he possibly win without that? NOT.

But USU's pass defense is bad. So, Jake, here's your chance to get voted back onto the team by your fans and poster-ers. Otherwise Bronco will tally the votes and you will be done, my friend. DO NOT, I say, Do not underestimate the power of the people. We ran Anae out of town and we can run you out to!!!

It's sad that this isn't a gimme game anymore, but yeah the defense will need to hold them under 150 yards rushing. I don't see them gashing us at all. And then through the air, I'd say keep it under 200 and we'll be fine.

I'd love to say "this is the week we turn it around" but the offense still hasn't proven it can go the length of the field 2x in a game and get TD's, which is sad. It'll be another scary close game in which Van Noy or Ogletree will have to make a big stop in the end for us to win.

Defense: Stop Turbin - and contain QB.

Offense: ram it down their throat and pepper the LB and DBs with swing passes to RBs, slants to TEs (like Matthews and Holt), and some mid-range to deep passes to Hoffman and Apo to stretch the DBs.

Key will be Heaps putting together drives that don't stall, and getting 3rd and short multiple times so he is not so pressured and coaxed into stupid passes and errant throws.

Lastly, no turnovers and mental mistakes which lead to good field position for USU.

It's possible that my TIC meter is broken but the sarcasm dripping from this post is quite funny. It would be even funnier if you weren't defending Heaps here.

Heaps ESPN QB rating is 100.5 so far this season. Of all the current Freshman and Sophomore QB's in the country, his is the lowest. Right now, Heaps is awful. Just plain awful.

He needs to fix things quickly. The only reason that we are 2-2 right now is because our D has been amazing and the ST's on Friday were stellar. If Heaps was even a decent QB we are 3-1 and likely 4-0 right now.

I think we beat USU because of our D and in spite of our QB and offense.

Heaps is bad and it is really sad.

You can win without a 136 PER. You're just making it harder on yourself. If USU's pass defense is that bad, then Jake shouldn't have much trouble reaching the 136 level and leading BYU to a good win.

If Heaps didnt have a kick-butt Defense he would have no defense at all--and certainly none from even his ardent defenders. Not with Spiff spouting all PER this and PER that.

I have been trying to tell you people for two years that He's the "suckiest suck that ever sucked." BUt some of you are hell-bent on this journey of "Dont Stop Believing"--including stupid, stubborn coaches who are staking their careers on this guy.

This is simply not true. Go look at my posts about Heaps at the end of last year and during the off-season and during Rise Up camp. I was nothing but positive and excited about the season Heaps was going to have. When his play went south, so did my observation of him.

I have a pretty simple formula. You play well, I praise you for playing well. You play poorly, I get after you for playing poorly. I'll also tell you what I think playing well is.

Number 1 key is the O-line needs to play better. Shortly behind that is the RBs need to pick up the free blitzers faster. Everyone has watched the Texas game and knows that the delayed blitz is the way to get pressure on BYU. The RB has to come off of helping the Oline faster and react back out.

The next key is Heaps making the easy throws. It continues to surprise me how good he is at throwing the out even into coverage, but how bad he is at hitting the curl and the crossing routes.

The defensive key is limit big plays and coral the running game. Also, get off the field on 3rd down.
