San Jose State 8:15 pm Kickoff

So the game starts on a Saturday night at 8:15 pm. I believe the Utah game was at least four hours. The TCU game in 2005 was over four and 1/2 hours. Are the BYU administrators confident that the game will not go for more than 3 hours and 45 minutes? What would they do if the game pushes past midnight? Is that a concern or considered not a big deal for the school? Will Bronco be instructed to run the ball a lot to keep the clock running...

Only way a game goes 4 hours with current clock rules is with lots and lots of stoppages due to incomplete passes / out of bounds / turnovers / scoring. The Utah game was long because of lots of turnovers and scoring. TCU '05 was long because of tons of scoring, passing, first downs, etc, and the old clock rules. I don't see SJSU having the same time issues as the Utah game. We'll probably play "Bronco ball" and try and bleed as much off the clock each drive as we can before scoring. We'll also probably give up the ball less and allow less scoring. If it's close, it could go longer, but I expect a little over 3 hours - 3:30 tops.

The other issue could be an injury. In the road game at Washington there was a very long injury timeout when an ambulance was brought onto the field. That probably took 20-30 minutes.

If it goes past midnight, they will finish it. They often fly home after midnight or on Sunday morning. IMHO, it is an ox-in-the-mire kind of issue. Now if we can just get the ox to block for us. I doubt that this would be the first time such an issue would have happened. Unless Heaps plays very poorly, we shouldn't have to worry about quadruple OT, but I guess it does raise an interesting dilemma and such a late start increases the risk of an awkward position for BYU.



Independence, access, and exposure, like every thing else, has plusses and minuses.

Would you rather have the game on BYUTV and kick at 4 PM, or on ESPNU and kick at 8:15?



Personally, as much as I like night games, I'd rather have the game kick at anywhere between 4-7 PM and show it on BYUTV. No one is going to be watching at 8:15 PM on ESPNU anyway.

Exactly. Add in Tuesday at 8:15 pm play and you have the games that ESPN offered to the MWC several years ago.

I think BYU very much considers it a Saturday game as long as it starts on Saturday.



Interesting to note, BYU has played games on Sunday in the past. None since the 50s or 60s.

Great! Let's throw on some retro jerseys and go schedule us some Sunday games! The games DO open with a prayer, after all...it's just another 3+ hour Sunday meeting, attended by about 64,000 people...

I remember one of our East Coast games early in 1985 going past midnight into Sunday morning, and it wasn't a problem. It was either the Boston College game (played at the Meadowlands, if I recall) or the Temple game, but I don't remember which. Does anyone else remember this?

Not to get preachy, but losely quoting scripture, the sabbath day was made for man and not man for the sabbath day. The concept is that BYU does not schedule games on Sundays. A game going over on Saturday to Sunday is not going to turn Brother Brigham over in his grave. Church General Authorities travel on Sundays often coming home from assignments. I work for the Church and I've traveled out on business on Sundays several times. At the area office in Hong Kong, in that building they have a ward, which offers sacrament meetings on Tuesdays, Wednesday, Thursdays and Fridays because there are many LDS non-Chinese members living there that cannot attend church on Sunday, so they have other days to observe the sabbath. Just because BYU doesn't schedule games on Sundays, don't get too hung up on the issue.



Bottom line is I wish the game was earlier. Makes for a late night and tired ward clerk the following Sunday morning, but whatever. I'm still going.

When I was a freshman at BYU ('90-'91) they started a basketball game with :utard: at like 10 pm to accommodate ESPN scheduling. At 11:59:50 the :utard: fans started a countdown and then brought out signs with messages about keeping the sabbath holy and no Sunday play. All done with a ton of class, of course :roll:



There have been plenty of times when a game at Hawai'i finished well after midnight in Provo. Just sayin' that the start time is what matters.
