Monson's article--my rebuttal

Gordon Monson floated the idea out here that BYU might not want to enter the CFB arms race and might put less emphasis on athletics. To be clear, some signs have been out there from Pres. Samuelson and his comments, but I do not think it is his decision to make. I also do not think that others at BYU agree with that position--at all. And I am not sure that is what BYU is working towards either.



First, BYU went to donors in the last year and asked them to pony up big $$$ to add a new HD video scoreboard, sound system, and other upgrades to LES. That money is in the bank, and I have been told work starts soon after this season ends. IF BYU is going to de-value athletics, why ask for MILLIONS from donors then for upgrades?



Second, BYU just recently went to donors again to ask for more $$$ for upgrades to LES and the MC. MC is supposed to be getting new scoreboards, HD video boards, and the rumor I am hearing is that when BYU switches the seating for next season (students all to south EZ and south corner of west bleacher), BYU might to some seating upgrades by adding boxes for a premium. BYU is attempting to increase revenues on game day.



So invest MILLIONS in facilities upgrades if you plan to de-emphasize athletics? Why put programs in place to generate more revenue to help pay more $$$$ to head coaches at BYU (Coaches Circle), if you plan to de-emphasize athletics?



Sorry, but I am not buying this. Everything BYU has done recently has been to improve income for the AD, to improve facilities, to work to keep coaches long-term and not become a stepping stone program. There may be some at BYU who are anti-athletics, and they always will be, but if BYU wants their brand to remain high profile, BYU Athletics is the flag bearer for that. Unless BYU simply want to be like Libery University, Oral Roberts University, LMU and other schools they get little to no play nationally, and less support from their own membership.



Sorry, but if Notre Dame is what we aspire to be like in respects, sports will remain very high profile.

Amen!! I have drawn similar logical conclusions in my own mind.

I was just commenting at the game on Friday that our jumbotron is way too small and should be at least the size of the entire current scoreboard. I'm excited to hear that something is already in the works. Now if we can just get them to actually show replays and maybe stats more than twice a game that would be nice...

My dad empuma said the exact same thing to me on Friday. We sit on the east bleachers on the 5 yard line right in the "the shadow" of the "jumbotron" and it's still way too small to see from not all that far away. They just replaced the thing in 2008... Definitely needs to be bigger!

And if they could show "score of interest" regularly, and during timeouts instead of in the middle of drives...

Monson makes it a point to say the most controversial thing about BYU. He reports controversy not news. Last week he was saying that Utah's football program is far superior to BYUs and "it's not even close." If BYU gets a Big 12 invite this week, he will "report" on the similarities between BYU and Baylor in the Big 12. The week after that, he will report on the "fact" that Utah players really can walk and drink a six pack at the same time or some other controversial item.
