Jake Heaps on Third Downs

Here are Heaps stats on third downs:



vs. Ole Miss:

5/11 (4 converted), 57 yards, 0 TD, 0 INT



vs. Texas

6/12 (3 converted), 52 yards, O TD, 1 INT



vs. Utah

5/13 (4 converted), 38 yards, 0 TD, 1 INT



vs. UCF

4/11 (3 converted), 30 yards, 0 TD, 1 INT



Combined:

20/47 (14 converted), 177 yards, 0 TD, 3 INT



PER = 61.42

Ouch!

I've got Heaps a combined 19-45 for 203 yards with 1 TD and 3 INTs on third for a 74.12 PER.



Last year I've got him at 62-114 for 698 yards with 5 TDs and 4 INTs for a 113.27 PER.

AS has been pointed out before. Just give him 5 weeks and a couple games against JV teams and that PER will look a lot better.

That will be a misleading statistic. More important to see PER improve against teams we played the first four games than ridiculous numbers against sisters of the poor. We don't improve on third down efficiency, we play into the defenses hands as we become way too predictable. If Heaps doesn't improve against USU and TCU, we are going down big time as our defense will be worn down as in the UT and Utah games. Worth mentioning that PER will also go up as we have 3rd and short due to two good offensive plays first two downs. Third and long takes away a lot of options. That's why our improved smashmouth running game will be directly correctable to our 3rd down PER success.

Well, he only has 3 TDs, so that one is easy to resolve:



TD v Utah = TD pass on 2nd and 10 to Apo (30+ yards)

TD v Texas = TD pass on 2nd and Goal to Apo (6 yards)

TD v Ole Miss = TD pass on 1st and 10 to Apo (19 yards)



I don't care about the other attempts/completions discrepancy since it is de minimus. 61 and 66 are both horrendous PERs.

Except that after we saw our smashmouth run game for the first time this season last night, Heaps laid a PER of 41 on third downs--his worst of the season.

Then why was his worst PER of the season and on 3rd down in the same game BYU had it's best rushing game with an improved smashmouth empahsis? Heaps isn't getting better. He worse now than he was last year. Even against FSU, on the road in his first start he wasn't as bad as this.

BTW our offense creates some tense moments towards the end of the game - we couldn't sustain any drives to run out the clock and gave UCF two shots to score - thankfully the D stepped up. If they would have scored, I seriously doubt Heaps could have led us to victory with his passIng effort to date.

Previous BYU QBs racked number vs. sisters of he poor, and we laud them, so why can't Jake as well.



What we are seeing are growing pains, just like Beck had. Sucks to experience for sure, but be assured the coaches are committed to that process.

Also keep in mind that our "smash mouth" football yesterday was pretty much average for any other team, but when they were affective running the ball they usually ended up in short yardage for 3rd down, and in the 5 3rd downs that were under 5 yards, BYU ran the ball and converted on 4 of them.



One of the biggest problems I saw against UCF in the run game was the crappy blocking by Hoffman, the one time he blocked was on the TD run by JJ, if he decided to do that more the rushing would have been even better.
