I was at the game tonight, and frankly it was probably the most fun I've had at a home game in a couple years, since Utah '09. Watching the offense stall drive after drive was frustrating, but I got to see my first BYU kickoff return EVER (against a fast team, to boot), the D came up HUGE when we needed it, the stadium was loud, we were on the ESPN mothership for all the country to see, and we pulled out a win over what I assume is a very good football team.
I was thinking that, after a week of 1-4 (and at least one 1-5) predictions, the disposition here might be a little more sunny now that we have at least have some semblance of momentum going into the USU game. And yet, it's really just a lot more grumbling about Heaps, and to a lesser extent our secondary. I understand the purpose of a discussion board is to discuss issues, generally ones that attract a variety of opinions, but the negativity surrounding our program here is kind of overwhelming.
Heaps isn't a world-beater. I'm not even sure you could call him average at this point. I'm increasingly open to the possibility that he may end up more of a "steward" than a "king" in the BYU QB tradition. But I think we have to criticize him and the rest of our offense under the light that thus far, our offense has played against 4 defenses that I would classify between "above average" to "very good." (Perhaps I'm giving Ole Miss too much credit, but still.) Of our remaining games, the only defenses that put any fear into my heart are TCU (who nonetheless look a little down), and maybe USU (they draw up some interesting plays). Hawaii doesn't really concern me, I think we match up okay.
I think playing against cupcakes is going to be good for the "soul" of our offense. Granted, I thought the same thing last year, but maybe they still need 4 or 5 games where they can regroup, reconfigure and figure some things out against lesser talent. Heaps has had two of the more grueling opening schedules in recent BYU memory, and it's possible that the two openings combined have gotten into his head. He's got a few games up ahead that hopefully will help him exorcise some demons.
That's my two cents. I think we've got a reason to cheer up. I think between the WAC, Oregon State, and ISU, we should be able to win most of our games from here on out. And a 9 or 10 win season (which seems very possible to me, at the moment) may be a bummer to some of you, but I'll take it.
