Are our Rushing woes mainly Doman's fault?

I'm not blaming this all on Doman, we have some serious issues with our running backs and offensive line, but I wonder if a good chunk of our rushing problem is Doman.

We all know we rushed very poorly against Utah. But did you know we only had 2 rushes by non-QBs in the 2nd half? That's 6 yards rushing in the 2nd half on 2 carries by running backs. Should Doman have abandoned the run so completely? I don't think so.

Not only that, we only had 13 carries in the first half. Sure, it was only for 38 yards or a dismal 2.9 yards a cary, but JJ was averaging 4.4 yards a carry. We need him to carry much more. He should have had 13 carries in the first half alone!

And someone needs to tell Doman a halftime adjustment doesn't mean completely abandon the run game. If we had run it on 1st and 2nd more consistently or at least mixed it in, those 3rd and 9s would have been more like 3rd and 6s. Still not great, but definitely more manageable.

YES! I endorse this post. Doman is not committed to the run, and is calling a Playstation type of game, like Crowton did. BYU needs to commit to the run game, and give our O-line a chance to physically assert itself.

50 pass attempts to 15 rush attempts is horrific. Our run-pass balance is the worst thing we have going. Doman needs to be upstairs, and needs to let our line run block. If JJ, Q and Kariya are not the guys, let Alisa have a shot with more runs, or pull a redshirt for someone who can be the guy.

The pitch play we ran on the first play of the game was sweet because Alisa took it hard and was not afraid to get hit. Only 2 yards, but it set the right tone. We need more smash mouth with this offense. It will turn our season, just as it did vs. SDSU last year.

This is hard.

On one account we have an O-line that hardly gets any push or creates any holes for our RBs. It's hard to criticize JJ or the other RBs for poor performance when they're running into walls time and time again. Are our RBs the fastest or best backs we've had, no. But JJ has done more on the ground in the past; so I don't question his ability.

Last season our running game was better. We return just about everyone so you'd expect similar results. Only difference this season is the absence of Anae and entrance of Doman; so, it's quite logical to pin it on Doman.

Maybe some better play calling. Although it wasn't entirely effective, I liked what I saw in the first half of the Ole Miss game. Doman seemed to mix things up a bit on the ground.

This is exactly where Bronco needs to step in and assert himself in the offense.

Guess what guys, we run 2 out of 3 downs on every set of three plays. No ifs ands or buts, until we get the offensive game going again.

We were down by 4 when the 2nd half started and down by 11 when we got the ball for the first time in the half. After 3 and out the :utard: score 9 points without our O touching the ball.

I think Doman was trying to do too much with passing to overcome 20 points after that.

Our line is nearly identical to last year's, and our RB's haven't changed. The only significant change is Doman for Anae and tougher opponents.

I'm fine with that.

50 throws is WAY too much.

Also, remember that these are the best D's we will see this year.

We weren't stellar on the run against any good team last year, either.

Even down by 20 you have to run the ball. You can run the ball in a hurry up style offense.

We weren't the 'suckiest suck that ever sucked' against them either, but we have been this year, to steal a phrase from another poster.

I would argue that the draw and screen plays are some of the most effective plays when down by a lot.

So I agree.

Definitely. Not stellar, not "the suckiest bunch of suck sucks that ever sucked" either. Just average.

I would LOVE to have an average running game at this point.

You cannot run the ball if the holes are not there. Utah did exactly what TX did to us inthe second half - they focused on stuffing/stopping the run and forcing us to pass because they knew if they could bring pressure on Heaps he would force throws, lock in on one receiver, and hurry up passes. Heaps does well with adequate protection (he is not mobile) and play action passing which means defenses have to respect the run. We can expect more of the same defensive schemes from UCF, USU and TCU.

I agree with what you are saying, but Utah didn't focus on stopping the run. We simply did not attempt to run it.

A 4 man rush and playing double man on the receivers isn't "focusing on stopping" the run. The run game didn't exist. Partly because it wasn't attempted, and partly because our Oline was getting dominated with just a 4 man rush.

It is amazing to me that 5 350 pound men cannot win 4 250 pound men in a fight. You guys want to use the words "pansy" and "wussy" (and others) effectively? Use it there.

BYU's record is 16-15 in games under Bronco with more than 40 passing attempts. It's 42-6 in games with 33 or more rushing attempts.

Wow. You just gave me a new favorite stat, Spiff. Well done, good sir. Well done.

I don't think that the offensive line knows their blocking schemes very well. The announcers even said in the game that the olinemen asked Doman to simplify their blocking schemes after the TX game. Once again, coaching. Doman has not coached good enough to get our offense reacting instead of thinking. And the sad thing is, can he do it in 1 week and get us a win on Friday?

This one isn't as causal as PER. It's more a factor of when you're ahead you tend to run more at the end of the game. And BYU, under Bronco, has had many games where they've ran the ball a lot at the end to kill games off.

41 of Bronco's 57 victories have been by 10 or more points.

Bronco tends to either win big or lose big. 14 of his 23 losses are by 10 or more as well.

I agree with that. But I would also say that in games where we run the ball more than 33 times the PER is over 130 a vast majority of the time. I wouldn't ask that upon you, to look that up but it would be interesting to see.

If our blocking schemes are too complicated, tells me our linemen are dumb. We have had the same line Coach for a while, and experience on the O line. The blocking schemes should not be a problem. Not like we are playing many freshman. Yeah, it is different from the spread, but come on guys, assert yourselves.

If we don't rush approximately 15 times a half, that's a failure on Doman. Complain about Anae as much as you want, but I don't remember him ever forgetting the running game.

He sure did whenever Heaps was in (in qb2 era).

Heaps was throw throw throw and out just about every time.

And you are right, an absolute failure to not run the ball at least 10-15 times.

When you are behind by a lot, that is the worst time to not run a draw play or hb screen.
