Team Issues

I see the problems this team has as follows:



1. Bronco's thin skin. Unwilling, or maybe, unable to let things go. Wednesday he referred again to being booed in his first game. Then the Pharisee's and Sadducee's comment. Wow to both. He is in the wrong profession if he can't take it. But he sure seems to be able to dish it out.

2. Bronco's unwillingness, or inability, to make half time adjustments. Other coaches do it all the time. Bronco seems to think he is better than the other coaches. If I was a coach, I would know that all I have to do is keep it close for a half and then I own him.

3. Doman has lost this team. He might be a good/great OC some day but not now. Not even close. The whole offense is a disaster right now. And Doman was a terrible hire. Absolutely terrible. Many people called it and they are now looking like geniuses.

4. The Defense quit on Saturday. I don't know that I blame them, considering how hard they worked only to have the offense suck horrifically. It wears on you after a while.

5. 1 offensive TD per game in the first three games. That says more about this offense than any defense we have played. Previous BYU offensives are hiding in the corner after watching that.

6. The massive over promise/under deliver system that Bronco has in place. We were fed so much crap in the off-season about how good this team was going to be, that after a while we didn't realize how much it stunk. We do now. At least we should.

7. Bronco might just be the worst coach as far as his ability to judge talent. He is great on the defensive side but terrible on offense. Both players and coaches. We don't have a single playmaker on this offense and it will kill us this year.



The sad part is that non of it is fixable quickly like last year.

Not sure I agree with you completely, but I do on some points.



1) Agree

2) Agree. Our staff has been exposed this year at half time. Especially the last 2 games. We need to adjust.

3) Disagree. He has not. Too soon for that. Between all the ill-times penalties and stupid turnovers that he had ZERO to do with, if they bail now, then our offensive players lack leadership and are quitters. I see Offensive leadership and chemistry as the bigger issue.

5) Agree. But we do move the ball well. Have to improve in the scoring zone. That is our biggest weakness on O this year.

6) I think our coaches on offense misread this team and their preparations badly. Really badly. I see this as a major problem. Doman is a new OC, Cahoon and new WR coach, and Dupaix new as RB coach. Only Reynolds and Weber had experience in their position on staff, and the Oline has sucked. This group missed the mark and has not pushed this squad to be detail oriented, with a killer instinct.

7)Disagree. We have talent. It is just too sloppy right now. And as far as playmakers go, Apo is the real deal. 3 TDs in 3 games for a freshman WR is solid and legit.



This is entirely fixable, but will take time. No quick fix on this, and I think we just need to see improvement from game to game, and to not act like we are a BCS caliber team, because we are not. We are a team that needs to gel together better, and can with time.

So which is it? I posed the same question in a different thread and I really don't know: unwilling, or unable?

This is on thing that has bothered me from the start. Bronco would be better off acknowledge that paying fans have the right to boo when they perceive poor coaching decisions or lack of effort and that he's getting paid big bucks to minimize that booing. Complaining about it isn't going to make people stop. For $500K-$1M, I'd gladly take a little booing.

I don't know if he's lost his team yet, and I didn't believe he was a terrible hire. I was excited but a little skeptical about the return to the West Coast Offense because Doman barely played under the classic West Coast Offense as a player, unless his 2 years in Chow's doghouse and his cup of cocoa in the NFL count. Doman's most significant experience is as a starting QB for Crowton and a QB coach under Anae--I think expectations were too high for Doman. I think he has potential, but as my favorite US soccer player says [paraphrasing]: the game don't care, you're only as good as your last game.



At some point, Bronco needs to get involved more in the offense. He always talks about how offense isn't his specialty so he delegates to his offensive assistants. Bronco's been a head coach long enough that he should know enough about the offense to recognize when something's not right.

The D definitely quit. Utah scored their last two offensive TDs using run-out-the-clock plays. Utah has to have some satisfaction in the fact that they were running up the score by running vanilla don't-run-up-the-score plays.

3. Hope you are right. But I think that the offensive chemistry and leadership is a function of the OC. Right now they all look lost.

7. I phrased what I said wrong. I agree we have talent, but it has been massively misjudged as far as readiness. That is what I should have said.

Great question. I have been trying to figure out the answer for a while. If I had to venture a guess based on my observations of Bronco, it would be his unwillingness to make a change. He seems stubborn to me.

Definitely on point 2. Definitely not on point 7.

One thing I disagree with is PARTLY #4.



The defense DID quit. I DO blame them ... and I blame the coaches. First, how many times have we been told that this team is deep and can go 2 or 3 or 4 deep in a position. Yet, against Utah the 2nd unit players saw little action. When they were in there, they did as well as the 1st unit boys. The defensive unit coaches need to recognize that their players are getting tired ... simple fix: rotate players. If they are as deep as we thought, the rotation will keep them all fresh and keep pounding the offense. (DISCLAIMER: I am biased here. I have a family member on the defensive line, I watch this closely because of it ... and yes, I want my family member to have more playing time because a) when he is in he does play well (more tackles than the 1st team player against Utah); b) he didn't quit; c) other reasons like my bias ...).)



Mental toughness is not necessarily an easy fix, but it CAN be ... remember, these guys showed some toughness against Ole Miss, and several times last year. Personnel rotation is a quick, fast and easy fix ... you just have to recognize what needs to be done (THAT isn't always so easy ;) )

You said not an easy fix like last year because we have no playmaker. Who was the playmaker last year -Ashworth? Chambers? Everyone is back - plus Apo.



The schedule is the easy fix last year and this year. It is coming. Hopefully it will come soon enough. Then the Tide will Rise and Lift All of the Boats - like last year.



And we will get all excited about a new quest in 2012 against another ridiculous schedule.



We have seen 1-2 before, but unfortunately, since the 2nd half vs Texas we have looked inept on offense, and for the last two quarters inept on defense. Special teams has been inept as often as not.



That all makes the rest of 2011 feel too much like 2010 and nothing like those 11-2 or 10-3 seasons.



A win Friday woul provide the great elixir.

I said it's not a quick fix because last year Bronco fired the DC and took over. He doesn't have that option this year. That was separate from the playmakers observation.



For me, the two losses exposed our pink underbelly to the rest of the world and it isn't a simple fix. Winning a few games against some terrible competition only tells me that we aren't as bad as them. Not sure that is even the case. I don't think the schedule is enough this year to keep us from a losing season.
