Scheduling

I've been wondering what our season would be like if it were turned around. We would be playing all the WAC teams early and getting our confidence and timing all working and then progressively have tougher opponents when we are better able to handle them. I'm not saying that would solve everything but there's something to be said in my mind for the way they do it in the SEC. Everyone talks about independence and how great that is and holds Notre Dame as the example of success but they suffer the same problem and haven't had any real success for years. When your first three games are against your toughest, you're playing them when you are at your weakest. I know as the season goes on it's tougher to get quality opponents because they are into their tougher conference schedules but that's all the more reason conferences work better, unless you're in the WAC or MWC.



Anyway that's my opinion.

I fear that at least this year, a softer schedule at the beginning of the season would have masked the offensive/team issues and we would have had a false sense of where our team was actually at. Then when we played more difficult teams, the screws would still have come loose. At least this way, we learned that we have significant issues that need to be addressed.

This team doesn't need a false sense of accomplishment by playing patty-cake teams.

I thought that was what we got anyway--tons of overconfidence from blowing out five of the ten worst teams in FBS to end last season leading into Spring and Fall Camps where the confidence just grew and grew.



Now to grow something other than ego......like points on the "BYU" side of the scoreboard.

THIS. Exactly. Unless you have a bunch of seniors coming back with same coordinator and system. Downside, though, unless you have depth, indues may deplete you before you reach the tough games.

I think this schedule is exactly what this team needs. They need to hit rock bottom and their balloons deflated so they can start making the necessary changes. I hope after yesterday they truly accepted that they aren't the greatest thing since slice bread and it's going to take some work to get there.



I'm glad we have some powder puffs in the coming weeks with TCU on the horizon. Hopefully we'll work some things out, they'll get firing on all cylinders and against TCU they'll see where they're at and won't necessarily be ending the season playing cupcakes and heading into the off season with inflated egos.
