SpiffCougIt pretty much sums up my feellings to a degree. I'm getting real close to selling my Bronco stock.
I've completely lost faith in Bronco as HC. He's always done things that I thought were a little extreme, but I always gave him the benefit of the doubt and defended him when others ripped on his methods.
With his Pharisees and Sadducees comment, however, I finally admitted to myself that what others have been saying about him is true and that is that Bronco has got his job description backwards. He was hired to teach kids how to play football in a spiritual environment, but he seems to think he's supposed to teach spirituality in a football environment. I pay my tithing, offerings, general fund donations, etc. to help support the big picture missions of the Church and BYU. I pay my Cougar Club donations to help BYU gain a competitive advantage in athletic competition. If I'm sitting in General Conference, I expect everyone to be focused on spirituality; if I'm in a Cougar Club meeting in September, football better darn well be the #1 topic of the day. I'm starting to wonder who it is who really has their priorities a little messed up.
Then came the game last night. For the last several years, I've been troubled by the apparent lack of mental fortitude demonstrated by BYU teams when facing adversity, but I convinced myself that it was anomalous and did not represent systemic weaknesses. The occasional flashes of brilliance gave me hope for a bright future. Last night, I watched a team that made mental error after mental error and then completely gave up. Even Bronco admitted that that is an indication of coaching failure.
I'm not ready to call for Bronco's head yet, but he's actually going to have to make some real changes in philosophy and approach to earn back the loyalty from me he once enjoyed. That makes me really sad to say, but that's unfortunately the truth.
