Anyone Attend the Fireside?

I was flying back in to town last night and didn't get here in time. Reed Hornung (long snapper) and Matt Marshall spoke. Reed was one of my Young Men when I was living/working in Minnesota. Great family. Solid kid.



If any of you have reports, I'd love to hear them.

Apparently he compared speaking at the Cougar Club luncheon to being grilled by the Pharisees and Sadducees.

You read about what this team does off the field, like this fireside, and it makes what they do on the field seem less important. But still, since they seem to be living right on and off the field, I'd like to see some of that magic happen tonight.

How so? I think you've taken this the wrong way.

He basically said he felt like he was being questioned by a bunch of Pharisees who failed to see the "big picture" and then hoped that those "Pharisees" would still support the team and to use our hearts.

1. Pharisees and Sadducees is a strongly negative term in the NT, essentially conspiring groups with false doctrine that promoted the crucifixion of Christ. In more recent terms, similar to calling someone a Nazi.



2. Bronco repeatedly urged CC'ers at the event to intensify their questions, and he concluded his answer to the "why did you throw a short pass on 3rd and 21" with a 'sometimes we make mistakes'. Why then did the question later become 'pharasaic'?



3. There were definitely some blathering questions at the event, but I thought the tone was overall positive. I love what Coach M is doing for football and BYU in the context of the church's mission, and his vision and effort are exemplary. I just wish he would take anti-fan rhetoric down a notch.

I wasn't at the fireside, but here's a broader report of the cougar club luncheon, from my imperfect memory.



Bronco emphasized how the mission of BYU football is always to win, but in addition as an institution of the church, it also has the mission of bringing positive exposure to BYU and the church. He said more people watched the OM and UT games than have watched all our other games in 6 yrs as head coach. And the people at the two games were also favorably impressed. And that texts and emails have increased tenfold this year, providing an indication of just how much more BYU is on the radar.



He also talked about how the whole church building in MS was completely full for the fireside, everyone hanging on every word.



He emphasized that they are going all out, all the time. If you turned him upside down and shook him to see if there was an unexpended effort that would fall out, there wouldn't be any. After returning from the Texas game, he slept until 4 pm Sunday.



In the moment he forgot standard church building terms like foyer, chapel, and stand, and joked "I really do go to church!"



For exposure, he felt the OM and UT games were more important than the Utah game, but he knows that the road to an NC game requires winning the state of Utah. Again, they are giving maximum effort every week. He chastized those that made something personal of the Utah game. He asked someone, why is this game more important than others. That guy said, "it's right from wrong". Most of us laughed, but not Bronco.



As I said above, I came way from the luncheon impressed with the clarity of Coach Mendenhalls' vision, and his devotion to doing things right and well.

Sure. But I understand where he's coming from. I'm sure he constantly hears from the most annoying and negative people out there. People that question his vision and direction. And I'm sure those people have never heard of 20/20 hindsight. They think they are right now, would have called the right play that would have won the game, and will be right forever in the future. I'd call such people Nazis as well.



I think we're turning this into too big of an issue. It'd be interesting to see the tone and humor he attempted when he said what he did. I'm sure it would make a big difference.
