We have PER, RER, I want RBER

So we have a formula for passer rating, receiver rating. I think we need one for the RBs. What are your thoughts on how that formula should look?

You'd obviously have to factor in yards and attempts and touchdowns. But you'd have to figure out what multipliers to use. Like in PER, you multiply TDs by 8.4. You'd probably want to include fumbles and fumbles lost and probably rushes where you lost yardage.

This is the problem. They forgot to include blocking.

Spiff, do you mind typing out the formula for both PER and RER?

It's in my signature block:

((8.4xYDS)+(330xTD)+(100xCOM)-(200xINT))/ATT

You could probably use that as a base, maybe have completions be positive rushes, and throw in one for negative rushes.

I wonder if you would have TD's as a higher indicator because they happen less often, and also fumbles and fumbles lost as two indicators so that a fumble not lost is still counted.

Yeah, maybe bump up the TD number and definitely count fumbles and fumbles lost as separate categories.

Okay, I have created a first draft of the RBER. The formula is as follows:

((5*rushyds)+(4*passyrds)+(330*TD)+(50*pos carries)-(50*neg carries)+(50*reception)-(50*fumble-retained)-(200*fumble-lost))/(carries+targets)

With this formula, here are our RBs against Utah:

Bryan Kariya: 52

Zed Mendenhall: 50

JJ DiLuigi: 26.45

Josh Quezada: 7

Michael Alisa: 0

Lets look at the Utes RB:

John White IV: 125.45

Harvey Langi: 66.25

So far that seems like a fairly decent scale of how things went down.

Looks good. It is important to note that with JW IV, that he didn't have hardly any rushing yards through 3 quarters. Then want ape crazy in the 4th when the D gave up/missed assignments (depending on whether or not you are talking to Bronco ;) )

So although he had a career high, etc. He had a pretty average overall game.

Yes, JWIV looked like the player he truly is, in the first half. In fact, he only got a 32.78 in the first half, which makes his second half of 189.23 look even more amazing.

Not bad. We'll have to give it a few weeks to see how it works out and until we start seeing some sort of baseline emerging of what was a good game and what wasn't.

What were the teams' cumulative RBER?

Team:

BYU: 24.18

Utes: 99.70

A note of clarification here too: I count anything +1 yards or more as a positive carry. Anything 0 yards or less is negative carry.

Also, ESPN play by play didn't track any fumbles-not-lost by either team so I'm not using any in my calculations here.

I actually don't think that there were any fumbles not lost.

And I couldn't tell from my vantage point, but I don't remember any being announced, and I sure as hell am not going to rewatch the game to make sure.

Isn't there something about "cruel and unusual punishiment" in the Constitution? I think rewatching would be illegal because that would definitely be in violation of the Constitution.

Can you explain the (carries + targets) part of your formula? Carries, I get; but, targets?

Targets is how many times the RB was thrown to, caught or not.
