Honeymooners - Players 2

Ok - for which BYU Player is the Honeymoon most over. I have listed the various player Honeymooners below. Vote once.

Heaps. He can make all the throws. He has tons of potential. He talks a good game. Can he throw accurately and make good decisions with a Ute in his face? Can he do it on the field of play like he does in skellys?

Juice. Has his headaches become too much of a headache. Can he really do anything that Kariya and JJ aren't accomplishing? Will he ever out run anyone or roll over anyone? Will he be an NFL talent?

Hoffman. OK he had us drooling most of last year. Has he disappeared? Is he busy watching Apo? Or is Heaps just not taking the time to look downfield under pressure?

Apo. OK the finger is healed. He has been a bright spot at times. Not what we hoped for yet. See Hoffman above. IS Apo the real deal or just another high potential guy.? Will the announcers ever figure out how to pronounce his name?

I think the honeymoon was pretty much over for everyone else except Drew Phillips last year. And it was over with Drew before school started without him. So I will not put Drew on the list. We also had Pritchard, a really good fullback in a “potential” sense go down before he got a chance to show us what he had. He is not on the list this year. I don't think place kickers and punters ever get honeymoons, so I have left them off the list too.

I had to re-do this poll after an attempt to fix a typo using my iPad corrupted the original poll.

Both this poll and the Coaches poll have also been enabled for revoting should you choose to do so. So vote early and vote often - you can change your mind anytime - like Saturday night for example, should you choose to do so.

BTW - the honeymoon for Reynolds ended last year when fans said he was not a leader and was over-rated. That is why he is not on the list.

I picked Jake Heaps. He is the tide and it is time for the tide to rise. I have not given up on Heaps - I still see the potential. I need to see it on the field vs good defenses soon. Utah would be a great place to show it.

They are all young and inexperience is a factor. They were thrown in too soon - out of necessity. But they are not super human. Too many fans expected Apo and Hoffman to dominate SEC and Big 12 defenders. The most you realitically should expect is that they are competitive in that environment. Those teams are loaded with players with that talent level.

I'm sure that the youth had something to do with it. But why can't we expect our QB to go out and play like we saw McCoy play. Is McCoy really that much better? What about USU's Keaton? Is McCoy's or KEaton's supporting cast better? I don't think so. Those guys have come out fired up and ready to ball.

Heaps had a whole year to learn behind a VERY experienced O-line (sure they underwhelm, but they're still a great line) and a veteran corp of receivers. I just don't know if I buy the whole "young and inexperienced" argument. Heaps was a GREAT QB when he came to BYU. What's holding him back?

Don't get me wrong. I am not saying they suck. But even as a sworn realist re expectations, Jake Heaps has not met mine yet. I haven't started calling for Riley or a look see at Lark yet because I don't know that either of them would do better. Last year I did. Jake is better now than early last year. But I am not sure he is any better than end of last year. Lack of improvement is my disappointment. I am not sure he is any worse than the end of last year. I re- evaluate as we go along. Up unti 2 minutes before halftime, I was thinking how I could cleverly word my request for a seat on the bandwagon. A little voice, literally and truthfully, told me to wait until after the game before the demise began.

I could be begging for a bandwagon seat Saturday night - definitely not at half-time. I would actually like to sit on the bandwagon half time now. I can just never guess which half.

I said Heaps, but it is not a dis.

Apo has played well. Two TDs in two games...can't complain about that. Plus some good catches. On one long one he had the DB beat but had to slow up to catch an underthrown ball, and so got tackled right after the catch.

Quezada is behind two seniors, and had an sprained ankle and migraines. I don't blame it on him. He probably isn't all world, but I never expected him to be. I still like him to be our back of the future.

Hoffman hasn't been making mistakes, from what I have seen. I haven't heard of dropped balls, just hasn't been getting the ball. Once again, I didn't expect too much from him so he hasn't let me down.

Therefore it is Heaps. He came in with the most hype, he is #1 on the depth chart and touches the ball on every play. He hasn't exactly overwhelmed me.

That being said, I am not selling him either. I still think he is probably our best QB, he is just a sophmore playing on the road in the SEC and against Texas. We won the fist game and we lost by 1 in Austin. I can't cry about that.

I think Heaps will continue developing and will be a great BYU QB. He just probably isn't all world.

In some respects you could make an argument that the honeymoon lasted too long for Heaps. That for over a year now, fans have been willing to look to other sources of blame for Heaps poor play. If he had gotten more reps from the coaches in spring ball and fall camp. If they had chosen him as the starter sooner. If the receivers hadn't dropped all those early passes. If the offensive line had blocked better giving him more time.

If others had done this; if others had done that. We've had lots of excuses made for Heaps. None of which actually excuse him. Yes they give possible reasons as to why. But Heaps is still the common denominator through it all.

I've set my expectation for him: 136 PER. Anything less than that is no longer acceptable. He's the BYU quarterback. It's time he start playing like it.

I certainly wish Heaps was playing better, but I don't really think I can complain about a road win in the SEC, and losing by 1 in Austin. Those are pretty tough games to win. Now I wish he had come out and dominated, but I don't think that is a fair expectation.

Besides, it isn't as though the rest of the team has been dominant. Where is our running game with the three headed monster? Where is our kick/punt return game? What about our pass rush that has produced just one sack (although technically not)?

QB play isn't the only aspect of the team that is disappointing. And while I think Heaps needs a 136 PER to be considered a good BYU QB, I still think he is better than the other options we have right now. It also might be the new OC.

I'm not (yet) putting Heaps in the Pantheon of great BYU QBS. But I don't think he should be benched either. But maybe he should have redshirted and gone on a mission instead.

136 is what he needs to be considered an average BYU QB.. If he wants to be good, he needs to be well above that (like 150 or 160).

I don't buy the whole SEC is a hard place to play in. Last night the announcers kept gushing about how difficult it is to play in the SEC and how those teams out there were on a whole different level. I didn't see it. The verdict is still out on Ole Miss and my feeling at this point is that BYU should blow that team out of the water if the offense was even average that day.

We'll see, maybe Ole Miss wins out, and then that game will seem like a great win, but right now we are 1 point better than Ole Miss (thank you defense) and 1 point worse than Texas (who also will probably struggle this year).

BYU really needs to figure out who they are, and a large part of that is Heaps. I hope he turns it around this week and the next couple weeks.

He needs to back the hell away from the microphone and just go out and play some football. Sure, the O-line...blah, blah, blah, but we've all seen the replays and it's not looking pretty against tougher opponents.

Like everyone, I still have hope for the kid... It's time to show up or shut up!

All of these QB's mentioned are in a different boat than Heaps. All of them do have a running game. BYU does not. All of them have a few atheletic recievers. BYU does not.
