Brilliant Coach of the Week

Read this article and can't help but think what a douche bag Kevin Kelley is. Kelley is the head coach of Pulaski High School in Arkansas.



He ran 5 straight onside kicks against a much weaker high school football team, getting up to 29-0 before the other team even possessed the ball.

After winning the opening coin toss, Pulaski drove down the field for a touchdown. Immediately following the score, the Bruins lined up to kickoff … and used an onside kick. Moments later, the team was back in the end zone, celebrating another touchdown. As Pulaski lined up for another kick off, it would have seemed almost unthinkable that they try another onside kick. They did, and they recovered it again.

Guess what happened next? Another onside kickoff, another recover and another touchdown. After only 4:25 had elapsed, the then-number 99 team in the RivalsHigh 100 led 29-0.

If you thought the onside kicks would stop with a near 30-point lead, you're wrong. Pulaski actually attempted a fifth straight onside kick, but Cabot finally recovered.

The score would also seem to indicate they served up a two point conversion or something besides 4 TDs. But I am struggling with the math here unless some field goals were involved. Opening kick-off plus 4 successful onside kicks followed by a 5 th unsuccessful onsides kick would generate 5 scoring drives. Not sure how that got 29 points instead of 35 or 31 or 27 unless maybe 1 field goal and a couple of 2-point conversions. Considering final score - opponent wasn't bad and lucky they got a 29-0 lead.



Auburn will do this next time they play USU.

I'm not sure if "Douche" actually describes what a Bully POS that coach is. I hope the local papers are roasting him. Oh what an Ass he IS!

First off I don't agree with it. But, I say kudos to the coach for having the balls to do it. If you don't recover it then the other team has great field position. Maybe they have a terrible defense and he felt that the only way to win was to put up some points early. Don't kill me guys, just giving perspective.

After reading the whole article, I couldn't disagree more about your take on this coach. Unconventional? Yes. But the team they were playing was "one of the best HS teams in Arkansas", and "a much larger school" than Pulaski. I have no problem whatsoever with this. In fact, I find it refreshing. Had they been playing "little sisters of the poor", then I might take issue with it.

I don't have a problem with what he is doing. If this was Southlake Carroll or some perennial powerhouse with a student body of 10,000 students, I might be upset. But this is a school with an enrollment of less than 500 students that is punking the decorated programs of the state.



How can you be mad at a guy for onside kicking in the first quarter when you know coming into the game that he's going to onside kick it EVERY time??? I'm sorry, but the coach from the other school needs to do a better job of prepping his team--if you, as the receiving team, can't recover even one out of three onside kicks, that is on the coaching.



I personally think it's great, and it's only a matter of time before this guy steps up to the college ranks to try his model out at the next level. I think it could be revolutionary, and I think it is fun and forward-thinking, especially in a football world where the powers-that-be are trying to take kickoffs out of the game completely.



I bet people called Dewey Warren and other early adopters of the forward pass "douche bags" too because they didn't buy into the three-yards-and-a-pile of dust game that was football up until the late 1960s.

Still, even for Pulaski fans who have come to expect the unexpected, Kelley outdid himself last Friday night. The Bruins visited the Cabot Panthers, one of the best teams in Arkansas and a school with roughly five times the student body of Pulaski.

Pulaski might be the BETTER team, but their opponent was a much larger school.

But only because their coach always onside kicks it, always goes for two, and always goes for it on fourth down.



If they ran a traditional game plan, they'd just be another podunk 4A team from a school where all the kids ride the same bus.



You can't be upset at their tactics as a "powerhouse" when the tactics are what make them that powerhouse. It's like hating Justin Bieber's cuteness because he's so popular. Without the cuddly-ness, he'd just be another italics.

I've often wondered why teams don't use the onside kick more often. Kind of like going for it on 4th down more.

After reading a bit more on the situation I see that you guys are right. These are the tools of his game plan, which I'm okay with. I just thought this was something like Timpview running a bunch of onside kicks on some no body like Pleasant Grove or Manti.

Nah, this is nothing like kicking an onsite kick when you are already up 40-0 against a clearly overmatched opponent. That level of douchebaggery is reserved for the yewts.

You didn't quote the real eye opener.

The Bruins also climbed from 99th to 75th in the Rivals Top 100 national rankings, not bad for a school with just 350 students.

A school with 350 students against a school with ~1500. To me that is like Manny Pacquiao boxing in the Heavy Weight Class.



Plus the final score was 64-34 so after those first 3:25 the game was basically even. I've got no problem with it.
