LawboyGot to listen to Bronco address Cougar Club today at LES. I am always impressed with him when I hear him speak. He is quite candid at times, but does not overshare information.
In terms of addressing the Texas game and the running game, he talked about the Texas scheme, and how they ran elements similar to a 3-3-5, and used zone blitzes in the 2nd half, and that their constant movement and rushing from different spots combined with their speed caused the line problems, and created many missed assignments. He specifically stated that our power running game must improve and we need to get to a point where we can get 4 yards when we need it, and that 1.9 ypg like vs. Texas is unacceptable. Also talked about how our poor running game puts too much pressure on Jake. And that we are actually throwing it more we would like to, but perhaps not throwing it in the way that is preferred.
Bronco also talked about execution, and what needs to happen for it to improve, and he said that time and repetition is the key to improving this area, and that is what it will take.
Bronco also addressed exposure and priorities. He stated that they poll the football team each year on why they attended BYU, and that last year, 90% of the players said due to Faith, and that is why the team puts an emphasis on that and makes it a priority. He said for the players they get, it is not a hindrance, but the draw.
And going further, he talked about why BYU needed to go Indy and he said it was because BYU needed to increase its exposure. Bronco said that more people have now seen BYU play football in the last 2 games, than had watched BYU play in the previous 6 years combined on the MTN. Bronco said exposure for BYU football equals exposure for the church and that in order to maximize exposure, the team needs to win. Being on ESPN is better, but winning is required to maintain and maximize exposure with the goal of a National Championship, which he did not shy away from at all. He said he thinks it is possible and a reasonable goal.
Bronco also talked about how winning the Utah game was huge because BYU needs to win the state. He thinks it could be the most important game on the schedule for that reason.
Was an interesting get together, because Bronco was asking fans many questions during his initial remarks, and he was very loose and quite funny, but when it was time for Bronco to take questions, he was less loose, but some questions were call-in show bad. the two worst were asked by 2 old grandmas!!!
As to injuries, said Ogletree is back and that because Spencer Hadley played so well, he is doing a 3-man rotation with Tree, Hadley and Kaveinga in the middle. Although Bronco did not say this, I think part of the reason is also because Kaveinga has struggled some.
