WR beating man press cover

One of the biggest improvements I had hoped to see was BYU receivers beating man press coverage, and BYU running WR quick inside slants, or 10-15 yard outs to make the corners play more conservatively. And we have not seen it much at all. Not sure if it is play calling, or the fact that guys are still not getting off the line with solid technique, but it is something I am going to watch more as the season progresses. Jake has the arm to throw deep outs to any side of the field on a timing pattern.



Anyone noticed if the guys are not getting off the line well enough, or if the routes just not there? It was a staple with Beck, and it made our offense tougher to defend.

When I've paid attention it seems as if the corners are playing a slight inside shade while in press, thus taking away the slant because we haven't fought through the press at the line. and the hot read with that is generally a fade, but were not hitting the fade route either so we can't make them play more straight up giving us more options

I have noticed this as well. The only really open passing routes over the first 2 weeks have been to the tight ends. The receivers have pretty much been a non issue. My guess is as the year rolls on we will see that change. Our receivers will improve and the skill/speed of the secondaries we face will be less impressive. The play calling has been very vanilla as well. I don't know if I have ever seen the naked bootleg run that much. I am all for a "pro style" offense, but it seemed to me that Heaps looked much better out of the shotgun.

The answer to this, unless you have actually been to the games, is we don't know. On TV you can't tell if there is separation because the camera stays with the ball. And Jake is throwing a majority of passes to the backs or to the flat.
