BYu Ranked 71

U.S. News came out with it's annual ranking of colleges. BYU came in a 71.



The write-up on the school is horrible and very focused on the influence of the church. It's void of any real analysis of academics at BYU and gives no explanation as to why it's a good or bad school.



I bring this up because in the description it says we're part of the MWC! Pretty shoddy reporting and analysis if you ask me.

Does it give the criteria. If it just ranks undergrad programs, BYU should be much higher. If it ranks vs all that a university might offer - Med School, Law School, PHD breadth, MBA, MS, MA, BS, BA, Sports, quality of student life, cost, - then it depends how they weigh those factors. They probably ignore cost, for example.



But if you take out all of the schools that do not have football teams or are Ivy League - well BYU should still make the academic cut for super conferences.

It's the undergrad rankings. Which is BYU's strong point, along with the business school (including accounting and everything) and to a slightly lesser extent the law school. You look at the list and you realize we're in crazy good company - wedged in between three Big Ten schools. Just for fun, I counted how many schools above us DID NOT field FBS teams. I got to about 30-35 before I gave up, and many of those that did field teams just suck (Rice, Tulane, etc.)



I mention this far too often, but I'll say it again - I wish " academic excellence" as defined by CERTAIN athletic conferences considered undergrad rankings more than the amount of research the school generated. I'd care more about the quality of education received by the student-athletes than I would about the amount of totally-unrelated work produced by professors.

So, conference affiliation is about academics? Being in a super conference would signify academic prowess? I'm not mocking you at all, just the idea that conference, which has nothing to do with academics even in the research institution filled Pac 12, is anything but for sports affiliation and athletic competition. Period.

I am just trying to address one of the handful of excuses you hear about why BYU is not in a BCS conference - specifically, PAC 12 is where it seems to originate, but Big 10+2 would certainly echo some of it.

Those are the standard excuses - heard them for decades. I am not defending any of them. IN fact, my comment was intended to show how ridiculous the first one is.

Academic prestige is the worst excuse for not including a school in an athletic conference. What makes it even more of a joke is that BYU ranks higher than the majority of FBS schools. I just counted the schools ranked above us that have even a half decent football team(meaning not considered one of the worst FBS teams in the country every year) and I counted 20.



So even if academics did actually matter in athletic conferences, that wouldn't be enough to exclude us from any conference.

BYU is a top ten school as far as getting their students to graduate school. That is objective data, not some subjective liberal biased opinion. Reading that US News report is about as worthwile as reading the Huffington Post.



I attended a medical school in California. I and my fellow BYU allumni where more than prepared to compete with a class that included graduates from Ivy League schools. My brother ( also a BYU grad) would say the same thing about attending law school at the University of Chicago. He was on the Law Review and clerked for a federal Judge. His roomates that where BYU grads did well at the University of Chicago Med School also.



BYU prepares its students to compete anywhere at a high level.
