Sorenson is an absolute stud.

I am giving up on Stephenson, I want the Rugby Punt back.

At times he has. The 11 yard punt or whatever it was and inconsistency. But he improved last week. And I am not ready to give up on a guy that tackles on big returns. There is enough positive to warrant some patience.

Hate the rugby punt. Don't do it. In fact I hate our punt formation, go hack to the old style with one guy back and everyone else up front with normal splits.

THe 11 yarder was negated by a fumble a few plays later. After he got that first punt of the year out of the way I don't really see where he has been inconsistent.

Talk about not letting something go.

He's averaging 37 yards/punt. Not great, but not bad enough to go calling for the rugby punt. I saw one of those go for -4 yards on saturday. I can't remember which game though.

The 11 yarder wasn't negated by a fumble. The 11 yarder still stands, as an 11 yarder.

We could get 37 yards on a rugby punt, and we add the chance of getting a first down. He has punted for less than 30 yards, twice on our side of the field. The 11 yarder, putting them at our 30. And once again, against Texas. (I think in the first half.)

He is money punting around the opponents 40 or so, but he is ridiculously bad on our side of the field.

1st Quarter-

BYU starts at their own 43, after a 3 at their own 43, Stephenson punts to Texas' 3 yard line ( 50 yard punt).

2nd Quarter-

30 yard punt after a -5 yard 3 and out possession. Defense immediately forces a punt.

Heaps throws a INT setting up a Texas FG for the only points of Texas first half.

First half result. Stephenson did NOT hurt the cougs.

2nd half

3rd Quarter- one punt 44 yards after a 3 and out (see the repeating theme here? Just wait till the 4th quarter)

4th Quarter-

1st BYU possession, 3 and out after 6 yards. Punt for 39 yards.

2nd BYU possession, 3 and out after 7 yards. Punt for 36 or 37 yards.

3rd BYU possession, Heaps int after -6 yards. Game over. BYU moves the ball for 7 yards in the 4th quarter. Pathetic.

Never once did Texas start on BYU's side of the field. Don't know where you got that from. And those punts did not factor in how much the returner brought back the ball. And one of the punts he saved a TD.

Of course he's better when he is punting around the opponents 40. What punter isn't? Did you want him to tee off from his own 5 yard line (about where he was punting from in the 4th quarter) and pin them inside their 20? Get real dude. He's a consistent 40 yard punter. The real problem again is that the offense isn't moving the ball. In the 4th quarter they didn't move the ball period. That sets up big returns for Texas when you are kicking the ball farther down the field and the returner has more time to get a run at it. Heaps and co need to get Riley into a position where he can make plays. Asking him for 60-70 yard punts from our endzone is ridiculous.

Stephenson is NOT the problem.

And the 11 yarder absolutely was negated 2 plays later. Did Ole Miss score? BYU basically started right where their last 3 and out ended. It was a non-factor and that is his only bad punt this year. Please don't tell me that you're using this as an excuse for why Heaps isn't doing well. Just don't do it.

Are you kidding me? We are talking about special teams. Please leave your "Jake Heaps is the problem for everything in this world" attitude to the other threads, please.

I wasn't aware that following plays can completely erase plays that have been logged from the record books. That is interesting, logic.

So if I steal someone's wallet, but then it slips out of my pocket, it is like it never happened, right? Because I didn't end up with the money when all is said and done...

Stephensen is not the problem.

You are right, he isn't a problem, because all his bad plays are all magically washed away by the rising tides and boats (and oats) of an incredible defense.

what are his bad plays?

11 yard punt first game that resulted in no points. This of course is after the BYU defense served up a 3 and out that pinned him deep and was his first punt of the year.

Stephensen isn't a problem. 9/10 punts have been great and the one bad one didn't hurt us except in the (his) stats. Now we just need to work on avoiding 3 and out for the entire 4th quarter of games.

Hear! Hear! I can agree with that.

Let's just not punt anymore, and we are all happy.

(I do think we should look into the rugby punt, though. It is a decent play, and can get us a first down here and there.)

I would like to see 5 more yards per punt at least, on average - on those punts with room to boom.

And I think we will all see that Saturday - assuming our offense leaves us with a need to punt - and I expect it will.

I heard they will be using lighter balls or that a rising tide of thin air and wild oats will lift the punts and boats higher in LES than what we have been seeing with the heavy balls, muggy air, and instant oatmeal in Mississippi and Texas.

Unfortunately, the Utes will be using the same balls.

But our punter is a bit like many of our offensive players - high potential, lacking experience, and perhaps not SEC talent.

He seems to be more of a 35-38 yard punter than a 40 yard punter when you remove the extremes of 11 and 50. I would like to see no shanks and a 40-45 yard average with modest returns. I.e. Need to not sacrifice the old hang time.
