byucougar1Having attended both games in MS and TX, and viewed with disappointment some trends that have persisted and need to change if we are to emerge victorious this weekend.
1. We must have outstanding play calling and execution in the red zone for 4 quarters.
2. Play to win the entire game - IMO we didn't respond to TX defensive aggression in 2nd half and it looked liked we got knocked back on our heels - never recovered.
3. We must adapt our game plan if we are not having success. We really did well when we ran a hurry up offense in first half but abandoned it in second half - it gave their D too much time to read our plays and set up their alignment. We need offensive production all four quarters.
4. We have to establish a running game - this is huge for us. If we don't the defense will pin back their ears and pressure Heaps. Our OL must be better at run blocking and pushing the defenders backwards to open up some holes.
5. We need to be committed to play action, rolling out, and deception to keep the defense honest.
6. We need to WRs to step up and get open. Apo, Hoffman and Jacobson were MIA in second half of UT game.
7. Involve the TE throughout the game. No coincidence that Harline and George have won games
for us at the last second - the TE must be an integral part of our offense.
8. Eliminate delays of game in deciding on an offensive play or in getting the right person or players on the field. The Riley Nelson play was a good idea but it was telegraphed with the early time out in the second quarter. He needs more time than just one or two plays. Look what UT did with Ash - we weren't ready for him and couldn't account for his speed or the new way he used his RBs on fly sweeps and delayed traps up the middle.
9. Avoid untimely penalties that take away momentum. The stupid personal foul call on a great punt return in the 3rd quarter put us in a hole, and the delay of game penalty in the last minutes of 4th quarter buried us deep in our own territory.
10. Utilize the middle of the field and go deep on pass plays. Nothing wrong with dink and dunk as long as we are moving the chains and use it to set up some deep throws.
