Why does everyone seem to assume

Why does everyone assume that if ou decides to stay in the big 12 that byu is automatically in? First, no guarantee of an invite. Second, I am far from convinced that the BOT would accept the invite. Especially given all the fighting in the big 12. I can easily see BOT choosing Indy even in the face of super conferences.

Indy even in the face of Superconferences?

Would they stay Indy if it meant going to the I-AA? Because that is literally what will happen if we get left out.

How many viewers do you think Eastern Washington vs. BYU will get for the championship? Talk about awesome exposure!!!!

Sorry, but couldn't this be discussed in one of the other threads dealing with the topic of conference expansion?

How is being Indy in the Superconference era different than Indy in the BCS era? It's basically the same thing. There are 64 or so teams that have the inside track to the best bowls and a championship and then there's everybody else. That's true now. That will be true in the so called Superconference era.

Supercons will lead to playoffs. If you aren't one of the 64, you aren't in them.

The bowls will become playoff games.

Who, besides paranoia, has set forth the mechanics of the superconferences and the bowl games and/or a playoff? I've seen models and projections both ways--playoff and bowl games. Again, this is just an example of end-game scenarios being presented as sure things as a scare tactic to make people think that joining the BigXII is the only reasonable option. I'm not sure the possiblity of the end of the world is enough of a reason to jump in bed with a diseased hooker.

Why do we assume there is going to be a playoff? These changes have NOTHING to do with the postseason structure and everything to do with expanding tv markets.

Why do we assume? Because it has been reported that we have strong interest and they want us badly. A deal should be completed.

Because of Independence, we are a free agent in football. Nobody to sue them. Nobody to block it. No buyout to overcome. They get back to 10 ASAP. No rivalry to bust up. Rocky mountain area presence to replace Colorado. Big stadium. Big fan base. Brand recognition. Less Mormon hatred than PAC had, so less excuses like Sunday play or research. Utah benefitted from circumstances a year ago. Maybe this time the timing shines favor on the Cougs.

And don't forget those late season games. Think you will get any teams from the "superconferences" after the third week of the season? I would bet against just about any type of "good" matchup. And if you think comparing the BCS to the Super Conf is legitimate wait to see the animal coming. They may even break off NCAA affiliation so they can do what they want when it comes to recruiting etc. Whole lota negatives for being the school outside looking in. And I think the B12 is more viable than the BigLeast. Hence the BE trying to scoop up teams now if things start going south. They will get picked over by the Big10, SEC and ACC. I bet the commish is not getting much sleep these days.

Being in the Big12 != getting into a Super Conference.

I have yet to see a realistic scenario in which the Big12 is left standing in a world of 4 Super Conferences.

Me either. However, I am hopeful that rational heads will prevail before 4 super conferences becomes a reality and completely ruins the greatest sport on the planet. And one big key is for the Big 12 to stay together.

That said...even if OU and UT and everyone else signs long-term binding agreements to stay in the conference, and they actually officially invite BYU, I'm not convinced the BOT will accept. Especially with these events over this week.

Very good point on scheduling if the superconference scenario happens and we're still independent.

Not saying BYU should jump at the B12 but if UT and OU stay put they have a lot more pull than the ACC or BE in terms of getting more money for the teams involved (even with unequal revenue sharing). So any team with a choice of ACC/BE vs Big12 will take the Big12 and the money. The problem for the Big12 is that OU and Mizzou may have better options in the Big10 and SEC (I don't think the PAC is a realistic option for various reasons). Even if OU and Mizzou leave I still think the Big12 would have a good shot at beating out the ACC as a fourth superconference (if there is a fourth (or any) superconference).

Go look at the ranking and get back to me on how the Big XII is crumbling. Those schools have a good thing going and some are too stupid to see it. It is not a weak conference at all, just one with some membership issues, and those issues can be overcome.

The other reason we assume is because word leaks out and things get around. Just because BYU is officially silent does not mean things still can't be known. I have heard from many sources that the Big XII has extended BYU that offer. ESPN has reported that is the way they are leaning as well. I heard yesterday that it could go down as soon as next Friday, but it was contingent on OU getting in line again. Was told OU is just working for equal sharing on tiers 1 and 2, which would strengthen the conference and remove resentments. Tier 3 would be keep your own, which BYU would benefit from as well.

TExas goes nowhere, so unless OU gets stupid, we will be in the Big XII.

There's also the implied status of being a BCS school which we hope parlay's itself into a super conference invite.

but BYU is in a terrible geographic location when our most viable super-destination, the Pac-16, would rather wear Tu-Tu's to work everyday than invite BYU to join them. Expand that influence all the way to the Mississippi river and we are on a deserted, uninvited island.

The superconference concept will not dramactically change scheduling. Teams will still play 8-9 conference games. It's not like BYU is getting many October/November matchups with BCS conference opponents now. We will struggle to fill the end of the schedule with quality now, and we will struggle to filll it in the superconference era.

As far as breaking off from the NCAA, that is extremely unlikely. Nobody is going to want to forfeit the NCAA basketball tournament tv money which teams would have to do if they break away from the NCAA. Nor will they have the stomach to finance a brand new regulatory body which they would need to do if they broke away. Reforming the NCAA is much more feasible than breaking away altogether.

Amen...and it sounds like Texas would rather not join the Pac-12 after all.

Throw out the cost/benefit of independence or its ideals...to me, it is this simple: if super conferences are imminent (as Bronco feels they are), then BYU's chances to remain relevant are: (1) to join the Big XII, (2) hope that Notre Dame remains independent along with ESPN forcing BYU into the discussion, or (3) hope that some organizing body establishes criteria for super conferences to select eligible teams.

To me, joining the Big XII, provided it is stable, appears to be the best option.
