see last paragraph. Why wouldn't Texas give them rebroadcast rights? does this mean we don't give the LHN rights to the Provo game?

Is texas already throwing their weight around before we're even conference members? maybe making a mountain of a molehill, but this interested me following our supposed TV partnership.

The longer this whole realignment drama plays out it is increasingly obvious that the Texas administration isn't very bright. This is meant as no disrespect to Texas fans, especially Hookem, but seriously they could solve the Big12 problems over night by changing to equal revenue sharing of primary tv and earn their own money on the Longhorn network. They could make a huge friend of BYU by giving them rebroadcast rights, but they just can't seem to pull their heads out and realize whats up.

Nothing bigger than a Texas Ego. Except maybe Massachusetts hubris.

Well we have stake conference and were planning to watch the replay after conference. Will have to rethink the plan now.

I don't know how you can say we lost them; since it's at their place, we never actually had them in the first place. That's something that we have to negotiate with them. But there isn't much since in not granting them, especially if we're willing to pay for them - I'm guessing most schools don't do that.

With all due respect...where does it say "Texas" is withholding the right for you guys to rebroadcast the game?

ESPN holds the rights to the game this Saturday, not Texas.

Also, the LHN is an affiliate of ESPN. ESPN is the one who's been doing all the negotiating for the LHN with carriers.

That's exactly what I was thinking. Where would Texas gain the rights to not allow this? There would have to be collusion with ESPN. Why I don't know for sure.

The only reason that I can see for witholding the broadcast rights is the fact that ESPN and/or Texas is trying to get viewers to call the cable/satellite companies and complain about not having the LHN, and only having the replay of the game available to that station might help them, as opposed to if everyone could watch it on BYUtv. I don't believe that will make any difference, but just my thought as to the "why".

I guess another option is that ESPN plans to rebroadcast it themselves in the next little whitle and wants exlusive rights to it for a period of time.

Any of you guys been watching ESPNU this week? They have been rebroadcasting games all week long. Saw the Georgia-BSU game on last night, Oregon-LSU was on earlier this week, among others. ESPN uses these games to populate their broadcasting needs and to sell ad space. I suspect that they have earmarked this game for rebroadcast next week, and it will be announced when soon. because of this, they do not want to diminish the eyeballs that might watch by allowing BYUtv to undercut them. I suspect BYU will have the ability to rebroadcast the game, just not next week. ESPN just made a wise business decision is all.

By the way--DVRs work better than rebroadcasts do. Just sayin.

Except that part of our ESPN deal, we would get the rebroadcast rights. That ESPN did not care about them. I guess this was true just for our home games.

That's how I understood the contract...it was for home games only.

Hopefully ESPN is just trying to get some extra use from the game by replaying it themselves before giving it to BYUtv.

Love the DVR for replays too! :)

JMO, but this seems to be the most likely scenario.

Also, keep in mind not confuse the LHN operation, with the operation of BYUtv. Unless I'm mistaken, you guys own BYUtv outright, correct?

This is part of what makes you guys such a viable candidate for expansion, if the BIG 12 were to stay together, and not such a viable candidate for the Pac 12. Pac 12 would want to turn your BYUtv into a regional network for the Pac12. I'm guessing you guys wouldn't be down with that?

Unlike your BYUtv, the LHN isn't owned outright by Texas. It's ESPN, using the Texas logo. The announcers are ESPN, the employees behind the scenes are ESPN.

The LHN is a partnership between Texas and ESPN, that in essence we'll let them use our brand to create a new ESPN affiliated channel, and hopefully bring in more viewers. In turn it makes money and increases exposure for both sides.

There's no love lost between BYU and the Pac-12. A few key liberal schools hate the LDS church and want nothing to do with us. ever. TV rights is a miniscule matter besides their vitriol and scorn for all things Utah; but you'll never hear them say it. They prefer to use more PC language like "research schools" and "academic and athletic prowess" criteria for expansion and then proceed to invite the likes of Colorado(seriously?) and Utah to the fold. Rumorboard is even ruefully laughing about a Pac-12 plane that is visiting "academic powerhouse" Boise St. this week (their academics are a disaster btw) ... it's all a farce. a bigoted, anti-religious bias against Mormons that has nothing to do with BYUtv, tradition, or traditional criteria of academic and/or athletic ability. Cal, Stanford, UCLA would likely have to drop into the ocean before BYU gets a Pac-16 invite.

It's also the reason that a Big-12 collapse is truly a scary event because when super-conferences come along and there is only one Big-4 conference west of the Mississippi (that vehemently scorns us) who else do we join? Big 10? Big East? ACC? Maybe the SEC will take us!

Nightmare scenario for us and would likely put BYU on the outside looking in.

If that's the case, then who wants them? The only reason why I would like a Pac-16 move, is that I might be able to catch a game or two out in CA every other year or so.

However, after posting on this board and seeing a lot of you guys posting on some of ours, I would love nothing more than to be associated with BYU for the long-haul. You have great fans and I think we could develop a nice, but respectful, rivalry between our two great schools.

Let's hope OU is just posturing and not really serious about the PAC12. If not, then maybe we'll be partners in independence. Let's hope.

BYUtv didn't lose any broadcast rights and ESPN isn't withholding any rights from BYUtv. A quick Google search or a better understanding of the conference television deals would tell you that the Big 12 (of which Texas is a member) television rights are owned by Fox.

ESPN purchased (sublicensee) the television rights to this particular game from Fox Sports and the Big 12. They were never ESPN's rights to give to BYUtv. I suspect they would have shared with BYU if they could have.

Interesting. Thanks!

I thought Fox rights were secondary to ESPN/ABC in the Big XII. LHN being tertiary.

Just wondering outloud...

Nope, Fox owns the rights to the Big 12. ESPN has sublicensed 7 games from Fox for 2011, the BYU/TX game being one of them. When they sublicense them they do not have rights to then "share" rebroadcasts with others. The rights they have secured are very specific and restricted. Here's a primer of who owns what. What this doesn't explain is that ESPN is giving BYUtv rebroadcasts and VOD rights online to all BYU games that ESPN actually controls.

My understanding is that BYUtv is aggressively trying to negotiate with the other rights holders for their away games (other conferences and other television rights holders). Some they'll get and some they won't. I also suspect that some negotiations will go right up until game day and even afterwards since these are rebroadcasts. Something else to consider is that BYU would likely not want to pay a ton of money for rights to a game that BYU loses as they wouldn't have much incentive to show that game over and over. No way to know how bad you'd want that game until the final score is determined.
