Texas wild fires

Austin area High School sports have been cancelled along with local rec league sports due to the poor air quality in the area. The fires are massive and not getting smaller. If they continue, it could result in the BYU game being postponed, similar to the SDSU game a few years back.

This fire is seriously putting a damper on my trip. most of the golf courses are closed and now the game may be cancelled. That was the plan, three days of golf and football. stupid fires.



good news is that the fires are getting under control and there is three days until the game. hopefully that helps. CRAP!

wow really? just checked and only gc's around the fire are being closing. Suspect the same for sports. JL, theres a golf event on friday hosted by the BYU MAnagement Society of Austin with Ty and Chad. PM me if you want details--and that goes for any of you that inbibe in this foul habit.

Has anybody heard anything more about the game and the fire situation?

It's not even as bad as the inversion you typically get in the winter in Utah. I mean, it was noticeable when I drove in to work today, but I don't see them canceling a game for it. Most of the closures are in the Bastrop area (where the biggest fires are), which is 30 miles southeast of Austin, and the wind is out of the north. Shouldn't impact the UT game.

CNN just reported that due to the massive wildfires burning through central Texas all sporting activities in Austin have been cancelled this week, including all youth sports, HS sports, public schools, etc. Apparently the air quality is so toxic and full of dangerous smoke particles with the forecast calling for offshore winds to push even more smoke right into Austin in coming days.

Not quite so much doom and gloom there as rumor board

Austin play by play announcer was just on the local radio, said the game is highly unlikely to be canceled. Air quality/fire issues not as big of a deal in Austin so he believed it would not be an issue for the game come Saturday.

That's a relief. Highly doubtful I'd be able to make it if it gets rescheduled for December.

They don't cancel anything for the inversions, which routinely put us in the "worst air pollution in USA" lists, so it'd have to be pretty bad in Austin before they do anything
