Texas @ BYU 88 (9/8/88)

Here's a link to the last BYU/Texas game back in '88 when BYU was still in the WAC and Texas was in the SWC.

It's fun to see some of the old Cougars--Covey started the game at QB and Detmer played a bit in the 4th quarter in mop up time. The BYU defense was led by Bob Davis and Rodney Rice.

The game was Texas' season opener, and the day before the game it was announced that their top offensive player, RB Eric Metcalf, wouldn't be playing.

Highlights include the first BYU offensive play (80 yd TD pass from Covey to Doman on a fake end around), crowd shots of BYU fans with feathered bangs, and lots of discussion between the WAC officiating crew on what penalty should be called.

My first game at Cougar Stadium as a young freshman. I watched the loss at Wyoming the week before on the floor of the Marriott Center with 1,000 or so other students.



Covey never seemed very comfortable as QB and the team seemed to win in spite of him...



Based upon Detmer's very gutsy play @ Laramie opening week, my friends and I were very happy with Detmer's entrance in the 2nd half. He was just so much better than Covey.



As to Texas, I was very disappointed by how weak the Longhorns were......

I was on my mission serving in El Paso when this game happened. For like 2 weeks after it, I had random strangers come up to me and talk about how "our boys" really put it to Texas, and how impressed they were by it. Almost made being in El Paso bearable...
