My thoughts...

for any who may care.



BYU vs. Ole Miss



1. I freakin love your defense, you're not going to be easy to move the ball against, particularly the run. Your LB's are absolute studs.



2. Jake Heaps is going to be a great qb. Has a cannon of an arm. Just give him some time, he's going to be a great one.



3. Apo. A specimen. Runs great routes. Big and strong.



4. Overall, you guys never gave up, and play hard every play. That's what you look for in a winner.



5. Don't be too hard on the overall performance. You went into SEC country and played very physical hard nosed football. You will be better for it next week, and for the rest of the season. A win is a win.

Thanks Hookem for your thoughts. Would you care to give us some analysis on your team since we were unable to watch the Texas game? How would you grade Texas in position areas? How do the matchups lie? What will be the keys to the game?

Was looking for some Texas vs Rice tape and could only find a 1 GB torrent. Did the LHN carry the game? How'd it go? Wonder why ESPN3.com doesn't carry the replay?



Will the defense we saw against Ole Miss be enough to slow down Texas?

Overall, its really hard to gauge just where we are at.



I liked our attitude, and body language. It was a complete turn around from this same opening game last year. They looked like that actually wanted to be there and were having fun. That was actually bigger for me, than the stats. We had such a bad attitude last year that I believe that alone cost us 2, maybe 3 games.



Overall the team looks really well conditioned, perhaps the best that I can remember.



We played 18 true freshman, so the future looks very bright, but not w/o some growing pains. Malcolm Brown, Jaxon Shipley and others are going to be special.



It was a tale of two halves. We looked lost and confused the 1st, and then good but not necessarily great, the second.



Garrett Gilbert still makes me nervous. He has a great deep ball, but his short to intermediate passes are low, and/or w/o touch. However, he also missed on a couple of sure TD's to Mike Davis, and one to Shipley. It also seemed that he was pressured a lot, which concerns me with the Oline's pass protection.



The defense, looks like it can be great, but has some work to do. Jordan Hicks is, in my opinion, a star in the making, but I was surprised with what little I saw of our front 4. You guys may have very little problem establishing a run game with that monstrous line. I expect Diaz to bring a lot of pressure on Heaps, based soley on the fact that that's his signature, nothing necessarily on Heaps.



Overall it's kind of hard to gauge, just where we're at. Afterall...it was Rice. This is pure speculation, but I think you guys well be better served from your tight game with Ole Miss, yet at the same time, you may have had to show more than you wanted.



If you guys have any questions fire away, and I'll do the same.



I still see this as a very tight, low scoring game. We're talented, but very, very young which concerns me.

I watched it online, since my cable provider here in So Cal didn't carry it. Only to find out later that my father-n-law has the LHN, he's an SC fan.



I wish I knew why it wasn't on ESPN 3. The online version was good to have, but just not the same.



Dude, your defense is tough. I think we may be better than Ole Miss, but I have no idea by how much. Again...we played Rice, so I can't get too excited about a 34-9 win.



Look out for Mike Davis with the deep ball, the kid can scoot. Jaxon Shipley is going to be Jordan all over again. Our tight ends are still a no show.



I love our three running backs. Like I said, Malcolm Brown is going to be special, but your defense is not going to be easy to run on.

I feel your pain! Our TEs showed up to the game yesterday, but still are struggling to get scoring opportunities.



BYU used the bootleg with good effect against Ole Miss, so I expect to see more short to mid range passes, with the occasional deep toss into double or triple coverage which seems to be Heaps' favorite thing... :)

The bootlegs surprised the Ole Miss fans I was with. That was out of Lavell's playbook and was effective.

Byndom got Defensive MVP honors for the Rice game. I said a couple of days ago, that Diggs may be the most talented of the two, but is a true freshman. Reports from camp is that the young corners have come along faster than expected. The safeties have been here a while but tend to be overagressive and are caught out of position, as a result. Vaccarro is very hard-hitting and high energy. Gideon is also hard hitting but unfortunately seems to get a lot of personal fouls, although I wouldn't call him dirty, he's just highly aggressive and it catches up to him. Adrian Phillips plays all over and is apparently very well liked by the coaches. Overall, due to experience, the safeties are the strength of the unit, while the corners may be the most talented, but young. We play zone, although Diaz says that he gives them a lot of freedom as well. Basically I think there's a lot of everything in there.



As far as golf, I'm not a golfer, at least while I was there. I'll call some of my buddies in case you're interested. Redneckjedi is also from around that way, so he may be a better source for in that regard.

Talked highly of Bronco Mendenhall. (I read a while back that he considers Lavell Edwards one of his closest friends.) Said Bronco is one of the great young defensive minded coaches in college football.



Mentioned that BYU is 2-0 vs Texas.



Talked A LOT about your defensive and offensive fronts. Big Offensive Line, defense will hit, mentioned how you guys knocked out all 3 of Ole Miss' backs. Said you guys are very, very physical and we better be ready.

Uh-oh. Someone's not relying on their history, prestige, superior athletes and conference to beat BYU. That fact that Mack Brown knows so much about BYU is not comforting.

You guys are good enough, that you don't need any of that anyway. Besides, finishing 5-7 the year before, will force you to wake up a little.



This Texas team is very young.



18 True Freshamn played on Saturday and 5 Red Shirt Freshman and 6 soph's, that I can think of off the top of my head.



Our youth alone has me very concerned about this game. That coupled with our qb play, especially after seeing your defense on Saturday.

Hookem, you my friend are a class act. I have enjoyed your commentary on here since you came on here (I think it has been a couple of years). OleMissInPeace was a stud and you have been great. If you represent your fan base, Texas is class all the way. I work for a huge international company with a large base in Houston (I live in Utah). All the Texas fans I work with have been great. I still chuckle over the OU fan on here the summer of 09, who started out great, but the closer the game got, the more arrogant he became. I'm sure that most OU fans are fine, at least I am sure you think so. :whistle: :crazy:



What I saw from BYU was a tale of two halves from Jake. Once he got blindsided on the first drive, he wasn't the same the rest of the half. The int in the 3rd qtr was completely on him but he was much better in the 2nd half. I have watched every BYU game since 1989 and this is the best D I have seen, at least for the first game. We were impressive in 1996 but I think this D is better. I am hoping for marked improvement from the O this week.



I didn't see the Texas game but what I saw from the highlights is that TX has speed to burn. Either that or the Rice guys were really, really slow. ;) TX is definitely faster than Ole Miss. I have penciled in this game as a loss all summer, because TX always scares me. After Saturday I don't really know what to think. I expect a close game and mistakes will be the difference.

Agree completely. That is my biggest concern on D. McTyer and Morgan are the best tandem corners we have ever had. Easily.

I think you're dead on northerncougar. I have no idea what to think about this game, either. Both teams are going to be improved by this Saturday. It's going to be a tough, tough contest.



As far as Heaps, I saw flashes on Saturday that were enough to make me nervous. Gotta love his arm strength. He's going to be a star, no doubt. I just hope he doesn't decide to become that Star on Saturday.



As far as Sooner fans? Meh...

As far as Rice's speed? Their IQ's are probably much more impressive than their 40 time.

LOL! This section is part of the new renovation that they've done since I left, where they moved the stands in the north endzone closer to the field. So it's not as bad, but maybe you should take a couple of oxygen tanks just to be safe!
