One Penalty

All in all I thought the refs did a good job in yesterday's game. We certainly made our fair share of stupid mistakes; however, anyone else notice Ole Miss got called for only 1 (or was it 2?) penalties and they weren't until the 4th quarter?

And even that one was a bit iffy. Ole Miss is a well coached team

IIRC there were two, and they were on back-to-back plays. I was also pretty frustrated with how nitpicky they seemed to be with our O-line.

That holding penalty killed us and I think they blew the call. He had his hand on his chest.

yeah, that was pretty iffy.

On the same token, we got away with a Sampson PI call late in the game. All in all the refs seemed ok.

That call could of gone either way. There was some early contact but was the ball even catchable??

My only concern was that Sampson reached his arm out not making a play on the ball but on the player...Could either of them have made a play on the ball? I looked at the play a couple of times and they may have been able.

Ole Miss had four penalties all in the fourth quarter and killed them each time.



The holding penalty was legit. He had his hand on his chest, but he wasn't in front of the defender. He was grabbing from the side. From that perspective, it looks like a hold, because the arm is extended. The jersey was also pulled. Pretty easy call, even if a bit ticky-tack.



The two "formation" calls on our OL were equally legit yet ticky-tack.

You mean the one where they said Brown was too close to the line and when he moved back they said he as too far from the line? Poor guy couldn't find the happy medium

I think we were treaty plenty fairly, especially given the amount of home cookin' that sometimes accompanies 'intersectional' early-season games.

There were a lot of no calls either way. And that is fine. Call it close, or don't call it at all, just don't call it all one way.



Watch JP. He got about 20 no calls the entire game. He was right there @ the qb, then he'd get held or pushed in the back.

The only thing I had a problem with was on the kickoff after Ole Miss' last field goal, it seemed to me that the Ole Miss player on the tackle should have been called for unnecessary roughness considering he lifted the BYU return man up and pile drove him into the ground. Completely unnecessary.

Yeah but even that was kind of a laugher since he totally missed when tried the pile drive...

In the end, only the horsecollar tackle really mattered. That was a frustration tackle, and if that guy tackles properly BYU's momentum is seriously killed at a critical time.

Gotta say I'm a huge fan of that rule. Looks like it could be (and has been) a killer on knees/ankles/bones.
