Doman--Week One

I thought he called a very good game. I was pleased with our first down yardage especially. Last time we had a new OC, we scored 3 points at home, so while seven here is not so great, we can have a little perspective. It does not take a rocket scientist to know that the plays did not come in as crisply as hoped--BYU had to burn at least two timeouts with the clock winding down--and perhaps that will improve with time. Doman never panicked....

I'm not as positive about the Offense. Not so much the calls - but the execution. I'm sure this weeks practice will focus on specifics - execution in the Blue Zone. We actually moved the ball well down the field - we had difficulty finishing. I think it will get better quickly. We have good talent, a very good coaching staff & an excited ball club.



By the way - right now Texas is crushing Rice in the 4th Qtr. - Texas 34, Rice 9

It is not hard to crush Rice.



Doman did great for a first time, and with a jittery qb. I have not seen a comeback from 13 down for probably 3+ years.



The execution was bad (see my overall grades thread for my opinion their) but that will improve. I saw a LOT of good things out there. Not as dominant in the score as I would have liked, but the offense was there the whole game.

I think the play calling was fine. I think the major issue was clock management and getting plays in on time and not making adjustments with the pace of play until later.

I think Doman called a great game and make the right adjustments at half. Compare the OF from first to 2nd half. Compare Jake from 1st to 2nd half. Jake was off half one and missed throws, but the plays were there. Half two he looked really good. Overall Doman called a really good game. We had 1 turnover, few penalties, and just need to get the timing better, but I Was encouraged with how we came out in half 2 and looked great on offense. I think it was a solid start. 1-0, on the road vs a big, fast SEC defense. Ole Miss D is way better this year.

Don't worry. This defense will have our offense in every game we play. When the offense is on, blowout. If they're mediocre, we'll have our opportunities to win anyway. And I feel pretty good about that.

Calls were good, but the tempo in getting them in to Heaps needs work. The offense on the field can only move as fast as the play calls come in, and Doman was taking a bit too much time to make up his mind and send the calls in. That tempo can only come with experience though, so I expect it to get better once Doman starts settling in.

Exactly my thoughts sno. The Ole Miss D had plenty of time to rest and get set between plays.



Pretty obvious to me that Doman had less to do with last years offense play calling than some thought.

yep. I was one of them. In light of this info i stand corrected. Even so, when all the pressure is on Doman now, it is tougher than sitting on the side and having suggestions.

Let's pretend they don't get that fumble TD. We get the ball around the 50, and we drive down for a TD like we did the drive before. If it is a throwing TD, then Jake is the game's savior instead of the pariah. That offense was unstoppable. They just need to put together the missing pieces. You have a hard sell telling me that a 14/17 Heaps in the second half, who was getting things figured out as the game progressed wasn't going to lead us down for another TD.

I agree. I was fully expecting the offense to get the ball back and drive for a winning touchdown. The defensive touchdown was a great bonus.

Well I don't understand how so many can be so confident in an offense that couldn't produce against a pretty soft defense. More than anything though, you have got to be worried about the QB to WR connection. There wasn't one. Is that on Heaps? Or were the WR's really not getting open? All I can say is that Doman needs to design some calls to go to Hoffman and Apo early vs UT. It shouldn't take 3 quarters for the 2 best athletes on our offense to get in the game.

Unstoppable?

BYU had the ball 12 times (10 if you don't consider taking a knee at half and end of game) and scored on one of them (well 2 of them really, but one of those scores were negative points). But of course I should consider it a given that they would have scored if given the chance again. I mean they were about 10% of the time they had the ball.

I thought his tempo was slow, he took too long to get plays in and his blue zone play calling looked like a blind man throwing darts hoping one would hit a bulls eye. Having said that, I love Doman and think he is the right man for the job. I expect him to continue to improve and for the offense to start rolling soon. Hopefully by next week. Don't get too worked up by this though, BYU may end up winning some really close low scoring games (or losing them) until Doman gets this thing figured out.

My thoughts exactly. And I am almost resigned to a couple losses at this point. It's going to take a while to get the kinks worked out. Right now BYU's O is an late 60's corevette. Needs a lot of work but the finished product is gonna be great. I'm not expecting it to be finished immediately.



I think it's now obvious that when Bronco finally put doman's O under his pressure cooker D, the offensive production abruptly stopped during fall camp. Bronco was just toying with the guy.

Man, you just brought all the memories back. That was how my dad kept me out of too much trouble in HS. I got the diseased remains of one as a freshman, and over the next four years were brought her back to glory. Doubled as a mission fund too. I've been looking lately for another weekend project. I have my eye on a 67 Ford Fairlane 500 Evolution, but I haven't pulled the trigger yet.

I'd call 20 first downs, over 300 yards offense, 35 Minutes (to 14) TOP pretty unstoppable.



They didn't stop us, as much as WE stopped OURSELVES.



6 for 13 on 3rd down conversions.



The list goes on and on.

Man I don't know what game I was watching, I thought I was watching BYU and ole miss. I didn't see any major faults with Doman's play calling. I thought he did a good job, but everyone seems to be blasting him because they couldn't get it into the endzone.



That wasn't his fault, it was the execution of the called plays. I for one did not see a very predictable Anae offense, I saw play calling that most of the time kept the D guessing. If the execution was even just a little better BYU runs away with the game.



I honestly felt every time BYU had the ball they had the ability to score. I know they didn't, but I felt that way most of the game but more importantly it seemed the team expected it as well. That's the thing I am most excited about, the confidence of the team, the execution part will get worked out.



Domain called a good game.

I was at the game in primarily an Ole Miss section. I can tell you that they all drew their collective breath when BYU would march down the field because, in their words, they keep punching us in the mouth with their passing and we can't stop it. They also thought however that we were great in shooting ourselves in the foot within the blue zone (missed FG and interception). However, most felt it was just a matter of time before we eventually put the ball in the end zone. Most all felt we would score again after the pass to Hoffman as we had gotten the big Mo and had figured out a way to finish. This being said, we have to learn how to finish inside the 30 - whether it be a field goal or TD. It demoralizes a D to have the O march down the field consistently and put points on the board. It is also a difficult pill to swallow when you move the ball up and down he field and have nothing to show for it. Doman will most likely make this a focus of his work this week as well as helping Jake to not lock in on his receivers from the get go but look for 2nd and 3rd options. While it may not have been obvious on TV, several times Heaps missed wide open shots to Kariya and JJ that could have been big gainers. Instead he chose more difficult throws with tighter DB coverage. Passes to Alisa and Jacobson underneath for big gains were most likely a result of Doman counseling him on looking for this option.
