who had the uglier win? Utah or BYU?

Level of competition was a little different but was it? FCS championship calibre team that utah beat vs bottom feeder (maybe?) of the SEC that BYU beat.



Both were ugly wins. Both were Offenses that seemed to stop themselves rather than be stopped by a defense. BYU's yards to points was a disgrace and Heaps was not very accurate or impressive, just did what he had to. Wynn couldn't throw 10 yards past the line of scrimmage but also did what he needed to to win.



I guess if there's one thing that is woefully un-equal was playing at home vs. playing on the road. Oh, and Ole Miss lost all their RB's to injury and was still playing QB carousel.

I'll take an ugly win against an SEC bottom dweller on the road than any win anywhere against an FSC team.

That was a good win!

NOt even close!!! do you know what ole miss would have done to msu?

Utah's poor win will hurt them more in perception than a close win over an SEC team.

I still don't like the all whites on the road.

Relevant question: which team WANTED to win more, MSU or Ol' Miss?



I suppose arguments could be made both ways, but in my mind I have to think Ol' Miss came out wanting to win BAD. They overlooked their first game last year and ended up losing to Jacksonville State. They probably viewed that loss as a major factor in their collapse last year.



If I were the MSU coach, I'd be telling my players to play hard, make some noise and put together a statement, but remember that it doesn't effect their season one way or another. If I'm Houston Nutt, I'm telling the team that winning this game is crucial.



Of course, being juiced up and can effect your team both positively and adversely. Still, I'd rather play against an FCS team that can afford to lose than an SEC team that needs to win, even if that SEC team is Ol' Miss.

Seconded. This is one of the only times I can remember where we won with them. You can't blame outcomes on uniforms, but still - sports are a very superstitious thing.

This. Frustrating. Sloppy. But we beat a worthy opponent on the road in a season opener in the SEC. But USU offense looked more impressie than ours today. SOmething I finda bit scary. But our issues were execution. That will probably improve quickly if we stay healthy.

I think if nothing else it gives a good perspective as to where the team is going into Texas next week. Opening week games are so full of unknowns. They now have some tangible things to work on this week.

In 1990, BYU had a very ugly win against UTEP. Ty Detmer had 1 TD and 2 INTs in that season opener. BYU had 9 penalties, and a bench clearing brawl against a UTEP team that won 3 games that year.



Detmer was a little better the following week against Miami.

Makes you wish we had Texas in Provo at high altitude Saturday. I digress. Still annoyed by our taking un-level playing field arrangements. It sure would be nice to have Ole Miss at altitude next year to make it 2-0. But Alas - 1 and Done.
