You could basically remove the headline, replace it with "Why I'm a BYU Fan," and I'd put my name on it.

That's the significance of Davies' story. You don't have to agree with the school's honor code -- which also requires students to be honest, abstain from alcoholic beverages, tobacco, tea, coffee and substance abuse, and attend church regularly -- to be fascinated by the contrarian questions that should be raised by BYU's insistence on hewing to some higher standard. Or Davies' admirable reaction to that.

I sure agree with you! Something like this has a high potential to turn out bad but the very opposite has happened. I see this as a huge turn around from the disappointment of missing a great opportunity in the tourney to great potential for the coming season. Compare this to the Miami situation. I admire Davies for his integrity. Thanks for posting this.

At minimum, what the BYU-Davies story suggests is something the late, great tennis star Arthur Ashe used to argue all the time: If you demand more from people, people will rise to meet the higher standards. You can get what you insist upon. So don't sell people's capacity to do the right thing short. People do summon their best selves when it's required of them.

But they come from underprivileged backgrounds, so we can't expect much from them!

I just read this story to my wife and we both cried. This is an amazing lesson on how repentance and foregiveness is supposed to work: repentance is private and forgiveness means pulling the offender close. Love the sinner.



Forgiveness is hard because the world tells us it is above natural inclination. And that is why the Natural Man is an Enemy to God.
