All-Time Record vs Big 12

The following is our all-time record versus the current members of the Big 12



Baylor 1-1

Iowa State 0-4

Kansas 0-1

Kansas State 4-4

Missouri 1-0

Oklahoma 2-0

Oklahoma State 0-2

Texas 2-0

Texas A&M 2-1

Texas Tech 0-1



Kind of interesting that we have the worst records against the worst teams in the conference. Although we haven't played that many games against these teams, our historical record shows that we have definitely held our own against these schools and should fit right in.

The last year we played this teams as well:



Baylor 1-1 (1984)

Iowa State 0-4 (1974)

Kansas 0-1 (1992)

Kansas State 4-4 (1997) (96 season)

Missouri 1-0 (1983)

Oklahoma 2-0 (2009)

Oklahoma State 0-2 (1976)

Texas Tech 0-1 (1940)



We have only played four of them in the last 20 years.

Still mad about that Aloha Bowl against KU. We had no business losing that game. 19 years later and it still ticks me off.

12-14 if I counted correctly.

Which is probably much better than our record versus Pac 10/12 (whether you count Utah or not).



My favorite is the combined 6-1 against UT, OU, and A&M.

Tom Young... the 4th QB. Dana Stubblefield and Kansas did not suck that year, but BYU should have won.

It's tough win any game with your 4th string QB. There's a reason they're 4th string.

That is the infamous 5th String QB Bowl Game where Tom Young won the MVP award in a losing effort as our QB - Steve Young's littlest brother for those that don't go back that far.



We started the season in camp with 5 highly touted Sophomores and Tom was 5th string. He moved up to 4th string because the 4th string guy, whose name I can never remember, transferred before the season started. We had two QBs go down in the same game on consecutive plays or something bizarre like that iirc.



John Walsh,

Steve Clement (a U of Texas transfer),

Ryan Hancock,

Brock Spencer - The nameless Guy guy that transferred out for more playing time, and

Tom Young.



I don't think Brock Spencer ever made it big elsewhere either. I think it was to a lower division school.



So back to the comment about transfers never working out that was on another thread- Clements who transferred to BYU from The University of Texas and Brock Spencer, who transferred out from BYU are both examples of transfers that did not work out. Of course Texas or Oklahoma, I forget which had a QB that transferred to UCLA that worked out pretty well - what was his name?



After all the hype, Walsh left early for the NFL, did poorly in the combines and never even got drafted after being projected as a first round pick. He should have stayed for his senior season and won the Heisman trophy or broke some records. Hancock left early to pursue a professional baseball career for the Angels and actually pitched a few games and started about 4-0 iirc before fading. Clement never rose up to expectations. Young had that bright moment vs Kansas but was inconsistent after that. Where there were 5, soon there were none, and the great BYU QB drought began.

Hancock would have stayed if he didn't get his leg destroyed by a :utard: cheap shot out of bounds. He was actually very good - my little brother was so enamored with him he went to extraordinary lengths to get an autograph.



I think he figured he'd have better career longevity in a sport where they don't hit you.

The transfer to UCLA was Troy Aikens.

Walsh and Hancock were both very good BYU QBs. Walsh would have been a Heisman candidate if he stayed his senior year. Hancock never missed a beat when Walsh and Clements got injured, until he got injured himself. I wish both stayed and it is why I always say stuff happens and you can never have too many good QBs.

Hancock was fun to watch because he was kind of reckless, and he didn't throw the prettiest passes at all. But his future was always in baseball; he was that good. I never expected him to stay for his senior year even if he hadn't been injured.

I knew the GM of the California Angels at the time and asked him what happened to him because he won his first four or so starts and then faded and disappeared. He said something about "short arm". I never figured out what that meant.

Just one thing. The only reason Sarkisian transferred to BYU out of JC was because of the early departure by Walsh. 95 was okay, forgettable really but of course 96 was fantastic. THEN the drought started.
