Gaines and Bryson

I believe it was the first day of school today. Any news on Gaines and Bryson? Did they make it back to the team now that school has started? What about Putnam? Any miracles there?

Just saw tweets saying that Gaines is on the team as a walk on and will practice with the scout team this year. Tweet also said that Putman has been readmitted to school but not cleared to play yet. Any news on Bryson?

I guess I just found my own answer:

Mendenhall had good and bad news regarding the handful of players who were academically ineligible for fall camp but hoped to join the team the first day of classes (which was Monday).

* Thomas Bryson, the defensive end from Layton High, didn't quite make it and will not join the team until January.

* DE Matt Putnam was readmitted into school and will rejoin the team if and when he gets NCAA clearance. Mendenhall didn't detail what he needs to get cleared by the NCAA.

* Safety Kori Gaines is back in school, and will be considered a walk-on this fall. He will be a part of the scout team.

* O'Neill Chambers apparently didn't impress enough in his try out and won't be rejoining the team until January (as was the original plan laid out by Mendenhall the middle of last season.

Bryson is out for the season.



It would have been nice to have Chambers practicing this season if the plan is to switch him to defense next year. Hopefully he keeps on doing what he has been doing to make it back to the team in January.

This is tough for Bryson. He already had his redshirt year, so I think this is just a lost year of football for him.



Glad to see Gaines back. he already had his RS year too, but was unlikely he played much this year. Perhaps special teams. So he will be a RS Freshman, so still 3 to play after this one.



Let's hope Puntam gets NCAA clearance. His size will help our depth on the Dline, which we need the first 4 weeks of the year. Hoping he gets back for Texas or Utah.

I doubt the NCAA lets Putnam back. The decision is taking too long, and the committee isn't exactly know for doing BYU any favors. We're not Ole Miss ;) . Still, you'd think the committee could help itself by giving incentives to institutions which have never had a major violation by having some leniency in these sort of cases. "Play ball with us and we'll play ball with you" might be helpful in getting teams to comly on the big things.

I doubt we see Bryson again. I see him transferring to Utah. Hope I am wrong. Gaines probably got the same deal as Phillips and is doing what it takes to make it back. He is making some serious sacrifices in order to comply with the heightened standards of byu. he must have some great parents.
