Daniel Sorensen's comment getting national attention

Good article. First the quote - then my take.

"What if we go out there and dominate (at Ole Miss, Sept. 3) and people start seeing us? And they put us on the map, and we're on ESPN. And they start wondering who these kids are – what are they doing with their lives, and why are they so good?

"And maybe a bunch of white boys out there go down and beat up on an SEC team, a big, physical team like (Ole Miss)."

So - is Sorensen unaware that African American's and Polynesian's are on the Cougar Football Team? Of course not - that's absurd!

So - what was he saying? Sorensen was commenting on how other teams, and the football community outside of Utah view the BYU Cougars - a "bunch of white boys." It obviously a "TIC" comment. Sorensen's comment is accurate when put into the context of how other's view us. It's not racist, it's not inaccurate, it's not insensitive.

I do think there is a bit of frustration being vented from Daniel. A sound bite does not do justice to the deep feelings Daniel and this team are carrying. All football players & teams want respect. I think this team is wants it, & will play to get respect. They are talented, cohesive & hungry. It's going to be a vey good game. Let's just play the game & stop making "much ado about nothing."

I agree with your points Ddawg, except for one, that was NOT a good article. This is the second article that IMO this site has written to try and capture attention but sorely lacks credibility.

First, the author is doing the same thing he condemns. Drawing more attention to the "quote" by writing more about it. Jumping on the "race card" bandwagon.

Second, and more striking, is his inaccuracies regarding Kariya and Frazier. He has disregarded their ethnic heritage, maybe innocently, but markedly.

Bryan has Asian background. His father is part or full japanese (not sure entirely).

Jameson's father is African American and played for BYU in 1977.

This author needs to get his facts straight.

This quote is why I said it is a "good article." I thought he defended Daniel Sorensen & explained the comment with sensibility.

Quote -

"I agree with Maller. The "white boys" part of Sorensen's much larger comment is a non-story. Anyone trying to spin this into a racist remark is off the mark."

Hey "dmcoug" - I'm glad you addressed the ethnicities of some of the players. I would have done that - but I don't know all of the various ethnic backgrounds. It's pretty easy to identify the African Americans & the Polynesians. What I am unaware of is the Asian influence as you pointed out so well. Also, I don't know how many Hispanic's or partial Hispanic's are on the team. You cannot go off last name or their appearance. I didn't want to offend anyone or come across insensitive.

For instance - I have a buddy at work. His last name is Roewart. His father is Euro-white, his mother 100% Hispanic. Looking @ him you would never know he is 50% Hispanic. I do not know the ethnic make-up of the entire Cougar team. So, that's a long explanation why I steered clear of something I wanted to address - but you did a great job. Thank you DMCougar.

My point was - do we think Daniel Sorensen is aware of his teams diverse ethnic make-up? Absolutely. Certainly he knows it & he was not disrespecting or ignoring anyone. They have bonded very well, are good friends, have built a tight team, and just want to win.

Just my take.

What was Francheck's take? I am starting to wonder if he is going to throw BYU and/or its players under the bus for his own benifit. He has written a few things lately that have bothered me since I figured he was more about reporting a story than creating a story at the expense of others. Did he throw Sorensen under the bus?

MY take is that some things are simply best left unsaid to the media. Let your play on the field do the talking for you and do not give out a quote that would cause anyone to run with it. People can blame Franchuk if they want, but if DS chooses his words better, this does not happen. Consider also that DS got held out of practice a few days by Coach Howell--simply because Coach Howell chose to--and it makes me wonder in DS has figured it all out yet. Just saying.

Agreed 100%. However, you inject youth into the equation - and you get the unpredictable variable "X." Even smart & bright young men say things without thinking through all the ramifications of what comes out of their mouths.

Franchuk baited the kid, pure and simple. That being said, anyone, no matter how young you are needs to know that the media is there to make you look like a fool. They are not your friend and their interests never align with yours.

How so? The offensive phrase was in the middle of about a 5 paragraph answer.

I agree that anyone making this a race issues does so ignorantly or intentionally trying to heat up a nonexistent debate. Just glancing through the media guide pix, there are 28 of 67 players that would be not be easily classified as "white boys". After two tears and hundreds of hours together, There is no way Sorenson could see his team as a group of white boys, so he has to be referring to the outsider's perception of BYU as a team.

Ps, I wasn't sure how to classify pendelton and ogletree, man or beast?

Only 2 tears? Makes sense because the cougars are not cry babies.

Been over six months since I've read an article, tweet or watched a video from Franchuk or that sorry excuse for a newspaper he works for.

HA HA! That makes two of us.

BYU players need to black list that guy.

Unfortunate choice of words. Did not need to be quoted. Otoh, in this day of every phone is a video recorder, that quote probably ends up on YouTube in many cases and then if Franchuck had not quoted it, it seems like a cover up. The young player knows his teammates are not all white. They know that he knows that. He is not racist. He is probably, though, yet another white boy that is tired of hearing that he can't run and jump and is not athletic. He probably feels he and his teammates have something to prove given the predominant make-up of the team has been looked at as being unathletic and slow regardless of ethnicity. Even our African American Stud Logan was "too short". Ethnicity aside, we have a bunch of walk on, and 2 or 3 star players with a rare 4 or 5 star player sprinkled in that want to prove that they can not only compete with, but beat, athletes that got much more national hype and recognition.

But I expect our players will get an earful from some of the guys across the line next week and maybe beyond. Hopefully our guys just humbly ignore any taunts, don't take the bait, please do not respond, and just execute and help pick the guy up off his butt after they knock him down.

This thread reminds me of a study I once read about.

In it, researchers took two groups of men. They then had each group come in and practice making some 15 foot putts. For one group, prior to handing over the putter they told the men it was a test to determine athleticism and hand/eye coordination. For the other group, they told the men prior to putting that it was a test to assess intelligence and reasoning abilities.

In the first group, the African American males significantly out performed Caucasian males. In the second group, Caucasian males significantly outperformed African American males.

Is one race more athletic than the other? No. However, for whatever reason we've been conditioned in our society to think such and, unfortunately, as the study demonstrates, respond according to the conditioning. The white kid grows up thinking he isn't as "athletic" as the black kid next door and therefore if he stands any chance of beating the black kid in athletics must "out smart" the physically superior opponent. Similarly, the black kid grows up thinking he isn't as "smart" as the white kid next door and to beat the superior intellect of his opponent must out run, jump, play him.

Is there any way you can find us a copy of that article? Very interesting and sad.

I'll see what I can do. It was 5+ years ago that I came across it. In my line of work I constantly come across such things and it can be a bit hard to keep track of what came from where.
