Bowl Affiliations

This may have been discussed previously, but one of the few potential drawbacks of Independence is Bowl Affiliations. Currently we end up the same place whether we go 6-6 or 11-1.



Is there a better way to handle this? How do the other Indies do it, especially ND?



Could we have a loose bowl agreement with the other Indies that would let us get a package of 3-4 bowls of various prestige and the best team in the BCS polls goes to the best of those bowls, and so forth on down the line?

That is a good idea. I owuld like to see it happen. The reason it won't, IMO, is that most bowls don't want Army or Navy. If it was ND, BYU and one other big name, such a scenario would probably work.

ND ties into the Big East bowl arrangements. I think that if Indy is long-term, BYU will try to forge agreements with multiple bowls, based on the teams' performance - i.e. BYU has 10 wins or more, they get an automatic invite to the Holiday Bowl - or could be based on rankings, etc. They'd have to encroach on other conference's bowl arrangements, but with a shrinking Big 12, that could be a possibility.

I like being tied to a bowl game before each year. That way you can actually make travel plans well in advance.

Have multiple ties--one bowl has right of first refusal and second bowl must take if eligible. If taken by the first bowl, BYU pays a potion of the bowl money to the second bowl as compensation.

I'm curious how this will go. ND uses the Big East bowls and the Big East has the worst bowl situation of the BCS conferences. ND is actually in the Big East for the other sports so they actually have an ongoing relationship with that conference. Because of our situation I'm very pessimistic that BYU will get a decent bowl contract.



I just don't see the Pac-12 and Big 12 telling the Holiday Bowl, "sure let BYU have one of our spots in a given year."



The independent grouping is a good idea, but the best bowl we could get out of that is the Mac N Cheese Bowl.



Maybe BYU could coordinate with the other nonAQ conferences and convince a bowl like the Insight Bowl to take the highest ranked NonAQ team that is not playing in a BCS game to play in that bowl against a 4th place Big 10 or Pac-12 team. With a bowl like the Mac N Cheese Bowl as a backup.

I think that in the near future we will see something like the following:



Holiday Bowl- PAC12 #2 or BYU, vs Big 12 #3, San Diego Poinsettia Bowl BYU or PAC12 #5/6 vs MWC.



I chose these games, because they are operated by the same entity. The entity gets BYU either way if they are eligible, but they get to select the game that they want them in.

Because it would be what the bowl would give them. If the Holiday bowl wants BYU, this is the scenario it happens. I think the PAC-12 would only lose the team if they had two in the BCS (like last year) and/or BYU was really good. Or it could be the Big 12 #3 or BYU as well.

The Pac-12 could tell the bowl to stick it and walk away if that was what the bowl gave them. The Holiday Bowl wouldn't want that. I'm pretty certain if the Bowl had to choose between BYU and the Pac-12 they'll choose the Pac-12.

So I was very against the bottom bowls BYU was signing with thinking they could have picked up some of the Big12 leftovers (ie Pinstripe, Texas). What I failed to realize before is that ESPN televises all of those games and they want the best matchup so they'll let BYU out of whatever bowl they are guarunteed if they think they will get a better audience with Syracuse-BYU in the Pinstripe bowl. I think the bowl games BYU has signed with are the worst possible scenario at 6-6 but if BYU is better they'll get the option that yields the most cash for ESPN which will probably be the best bowl available.
